Helen Mirren has joined Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis in Summit Entertainment's espionage thriller "Red," based on the WildStorm/DC comicbook.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing, with DC exec Gregory Noveck as exec producer. Robert Schwentke's directing the script by brothers Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber.

Summit acquired rights to "Red," originally written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner, last year. The three-book series, published in 2003 and 2004, follows a former black-ops CIA agent who lives a quiet life in retirement until the day a high-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him.

"Red" is set to go into production in January in Toronto and Louisiana. Summit's set a domestic launch of Nov. 19, 2010.

Mirren will next be seen opposite Christopher Plummer in Michael Hoffman's "The Last Station," a German-Russian co-production about the tumultuous final year of novelist Leo Tolstoy's life.

Summit's "Red" Begins Shooting

Principal photography has begun in Toronto on Summit Entertainment's spy-thriller "Red," based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis.

Joining previously announced stars Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker and Academy Award®-winners Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman, are two-time Academy Award®-nominee John Malkovich, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Academy Award®-winners Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine, Julian McMahon, James Remar and Rebecca Pidgeon.

"Red" is the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

Directed by Robert Schwentke ("The Time Traveler's Wife," "Flightplan") from a screenplay by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber ("Whiteout"), the film is produced by di Bonaventura Pictures' Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian ("Salt," "Transformers," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"). Executive producers are Jake Myers ("Shanghai," "Hollywoodland") and Gregory Noveck ("Jonah Hex"). Di Bonaventura Pictures' production executive David Ready serves as co-producer.

"Red" reunites director Schwentke with director of photography Florian Ballhaus ("Marley & Me," "The Devil Wears Prada") and Oscar-winning film editor Thom Noble ("Witness," "Thelma & Louise") who collaborated with Schwentke on "The Time Traveler's Wife" and "Flightplan." Additionally, "Red" production designer Alec Hammond ("Donnie Darko") and costume designer Susan Lyall ("Rachel Getting Married") lent their talents to Schwentke's "Flightplan" as well.

"I'm so excited at the phenomenal cast that Robert and our script have attracted," said di Boneventura. "I think audiences are going to have a great time."

Summit's President of Production Erik Feig said, "RED is that classic project with a little bit of something for everyone. We are thrilled to see it come to vivid life with an outstanding cast, incredibly talented director, and top notch producing team. It's gonna be a good one!""

"Red" will film in and around the Toronto metropolitan area for nine weeks before moving on to the road and ending in New Orleans in late March for the final two weeks of principal photography. The film is scheduled for worldwide release on October 22, 2010.

Dir: Robert Schwentke. US. 2010. 111mins

It might look on paper like The Expendables with a classier cast, but action comedy RED thankfully has a subtler appeal - and much more enjoyable performances - than Sylvester Stallone's recent eighties muscle man revival. The audience will still be at the older end of the spectrum, though, and that's likely to limit the box office potentialof this DC Comics graphic novel-based Summit Entertainment release.

German director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) handles the bursts of action quite capably.

Making a play for at least a part of the younger action audience, Summit launched the film this week at Texas fanboy event Fantastic Fest. A wide US release follows on October 15 and an international rollout through independent distributors continues through the autumn.

Bruce Willis (who also had a cameo in The Expendables) stars as Frank Moses, a former black-ops CIA agent, now deemed 'retired and extremely dangerous' (hence the title acronym). When a mysterious hit squad tries to eliminate Frank he grabs his would-be girlfriend (Mary-Louise Parker, from The Assassination Of Jesse James) and sets off round the country to reassemble his old team: suave Joe (Morgan Freeman) is living restlessly in a retirement home; crazy Marvin (John Malkovich) is concocting conspiracy theories in his backwoods hideout; and still sexy Victoria (Helen Mirren) is living the life of a country lady while taking the odd contract job on the side.

German director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) handles the bursts of action quite capably, but there's nothing much on that front to wow thrill seekers. The comedy is nicely understated, though sharper dialogue would have enhanced the humourous moments considerably.

Most of the fun is in the performances. Willis, of course, has always been good at this kind of winking action caper but it's a nice surprise to see Malkovich, Mirren and Parker getting into the same spirit. Besides the main performances there are also nice turns from Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity), Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine.

Ako neko ima linkove ya QUEEN AND COUNTRY moze da me obraduje na PM...

EDITOR'S NOTE: With "Red" hitting theaters October 15, we're kicking off the next two weeks of coverage with five days of guest columns from writer Warren Ellis, co-creator of the 2003 "Red" comic book with artist Cully Hamner. Join us all week for original columns from Ellis that will look at the origins of the comic, his favorite scenes, and much, much more! -RM

If You Like "Red," You'll Love...

Would you like some graphic novels that are, like "Red," all about spies, liars, guns and things exploding? 'Course you bloody would. Let me give you a few suggestions.

Probably the best graphic novel series about spies is the "Queen and Country" sequence created and written by Greg Rucka, working with several artists. "Queen and Country" is a very grounded and grim look at the work of the British Secret Intelligence Service, which might be better known to you as MI6, and one of its field operatives, Tara Chace.

In the mode of the famous UK tv series "The Sandbaggers," Q&C is the story of a spy agency forced to do the most dangerous work in the world on the cheap by a fearful goverrnment, and the cost it takes in human lives. The books are never less than riveting.

Harder to find, but worth the hunt, is Pierre Christin and Enki Bilal's "The Black Order Brigade," a story of old men and women not yet done with secret wars regroup to hunt down a fascist terror organization in Europe. A very different tone to "Red"-the-film, and a few shades darker than "Red"-the-book, but a superb work from two of France's major creators.

Fancy the grim and tangled underworld without the spies? Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' "Criminal" books feature clever plots, con games and revenge schemes, and are generally the best noir on the comics market. Ed and Sean's lighter superhero-crime graphic novel "Incognito" (where the chemically-depowered supervillain in witness protection discovers that recreational drugs give him his super-abilities back) was recently optioned for film.

Or you could buy all my books and just pretend they were about spies and sh*t and GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY BLOODY COMPUTER I'LL SAY WHAT I BLOODY WELL LIKE NO STOP!!!

Back at the desk for a few hours. While I'm still conscious, I kind of want to do a final statement/wrapup/overview thing on RED.

If you live in North America, it may not have escaped your notice this week that RED, the movie based on the graphic novel I wrote for Cully Hamner to draw, opens this coming Friday. (And Jack Schulze tells me he's seeing ads for RED on the Tube in London now.) I still haven't seen the film myself yet, but I understand the early screenings and the premiere went well.

I've been fairly distant from the whole process. Sometimes that's been my choice, sometimes it's been an aspect of the process, but on the whole I think it's kept me sane. A big comics company did something to me that really annoyed me over the last few days, and I suspect that if I'd been stressed out about the imminent opening of the film that would probably have turned into a public venting. As it is, I am simply quietly, paranoidly convinced that we're going to get our bums kicked by JACKASS 3-D. (Also, being bedridden by a virus for five days may have contributed to the weak, murky zen condition.)

The RED movie experience has been fun. I got to meet some really interesting, really nice people. I got told great stories. I got to go to some interesting places, and the experience of doing the San Diego con from the VIP side was actually fascinating in a perverse way.

There is a small, snivelling and flinching part of me that would rather not have his name inextricably linked with The Last Comic Book Movie Flop Of 2010. But, you know, I am today pretty much at peace with the whole thing. I've met fine people and I've learned many useful things, and that is the most you can ask of any walk.

A lot of people, of course, are now commenting to the effect of "yeah, and I bet the money didn't hurt either." And god knows I've made jokes about that myself. It wasn't a huge, life-changing amount of money. Not money that changed my life, anyway. The one thing I'll always remember RED for, that I'll always thank Summit and Lorenzo and Mark and Greg and Bruce and Robert and everybody else for, is that it made me able to give my daughter Lilith the thing she'd always wanted but never would ask for. Her new best friend, Padraig.

What these people did — and what my long-suffering agent, Angela, did — was make my daughter's life better. I'll always be grateful to them for that. That's what this film means to me. Whatever happens next, happens. This is the good part, the part I take away with me from the RED experience.

Please go and see RED when it comes out in your area. This horse eats like a fucking whale, and I'm on the hook for its feed money for the next couple of decades.

Film ima vrlo laid-back tempo.

Wow, looks like stupidity is even better in 3-D. At least that's what Johnny Knoxville  and his crew of American idiots proved yesterday, pulling in an astounding $20 million on Friday for a weekend that's bound to hit $40 million even if moviegoers drop off after Jackass 3D's opening night. The Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren-starrer Red also had a solid beginning, earning approximately $7 million on Friday for a three-day that could reach $20 million.

The Social Network looks like it will hold strong in its third weekend in theaters. The Oscar front-runner grossed another $3 million on Friday for what could be an impressive under-30-percent drop for the weekend, a number that will help the film reach its $100 million goal (the film's domestic gross topped $52 million as of Thursday).

Last weekend's two new wide releases also seem to be holding in well. The Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy Life As We Know It could drop a scant 40 percent for the weekend, earning around $3 million on Friday. And Secretariat, which opened weakly last frame, seems to be losing only 30 percent this weekend, also grossing around $3 million on Friday. Check back tomorrow for complete results.

Solid results for films skewing older
'Red,' 'Secretariat,' 'The Town' in new trend this fall
By ANDREW STEWART
With a title that stands for "Retired Extremely Dangerous" and a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, it's no wonder that Summit's "Red" has struck a chord with auds over 35.

Though the film's older-skewing demo didn't put the pic on top its opening weekend, as adults typically wait until repeat frames to visit the multiplexes, some pics, such as "The Town" with $85 million, are showing strong holding power with the older demo.

Also drawing an over-35 demo is "Secretariat," which is seeing solid results in some areas but hasn't produced a B.O. trifecta.

It's even more notable then that "Red" debuted with $21.8 million the same weekend as "Jackass 3D's" $50 million bow, just under "The Social Network's" No. 1 opening at $22.4 million and more than "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," which won its opening weekend with $19 million.

"I think it says a lot about adult audiences that we were able to coexist in that world with some decent holdovers," said Summit prexy of domestic distribution Richie Fay. "It's a very positive note to see that you can have two or three adult-driven films in the marketplace at one time."

According to Fay, "Red" earned positive reactions from test screenings throughout the South and Midwest. Disney got similar feedback for "Secretariat," which has cumed a modest $37.4 million so far. The film, down just 26% this weekend, opened best in markets like Salt Lake City and Denver.

"Typically, drops in the 40s are the norm," said Disney distrib topper Chuck Viane. "So if you ever have a drop under 35%, you're sitting there with your jaw down."

In biz terms, the "older aud" demo is comprised of moviegoers over about 35. But senior citizens -- 65 and older -- can also help pics stay strong in the marketplace when they find a title that's appealing.

Some circuits like the Midwestern chain Marcus Theaters are seeing good business from discount programs for senior citizens meant to draw those auds during non-peak times -- though senior tickets average only $6.50 per ducat and even less during off-peak promotions.

Several locations saw good turnouts for "Red" and "Secretariat" in their second week, said a spokesman for Marcus Theaters, the sixth-largest U.S. chain, with theaters in states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Nebraska. "The senior audience is more likely to go see a film like 'Secretariat' than say an action film," the spokesman said.

Fay agreed but added that the appeal of "Red" was boosted by its older cast.

"Red" cost some $48 million to make, but with subsidies and foreign licensing fees, Summit is responsible for less than half that amount. "Secretariat" was also midrange, budgeted at about $35 million vs. an estimated $85 million budget for 2003's "Seabiscuit."

Lower budgets, with relatively stable marketing costs, should help increase chances of long-term profitability.

"There's something going on this fall that is quite unusual," Viane said, referring to the sustainability of adult pics in the market.
