Post by: SIMERIJANAC on 26-08-2011, 17:03:39

("Meanwhile, backstage," she says, "John Wayne had to be restrained by several big men from coming onto the stage and dragging me off")

Sacheen Littlefeather is a Native American activist who donned Apache dress and presented a speech on behalf of actor Marlon Brando, for his performance in The Godfather, when he boycotted the 45th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, 1973, in protest of the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry.

A member of Indians of All Tribes, Littlefeather had participated in the occupation of Alcatraz Island by American Indians' rights activists in 1969.
Brando became involved with the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the early 1970s. In 1973, he decided to make a statement about the Wounded Knee Incident, and contacted AIM about providing a person to accept the Oscar for him. Dennis Banks and Russell Means picked Sacheen Littlefeather.

She represented Brando and his boycot of the Best Actor Oscar for The Godfather (1972), as a way to protest the ongoing siege at Wounded Knee and Hollywood and television's misrepresentation of American Indians. Brando had written a 15-page speech for Littlefeather to give at the ceremony, but when the producer met her backstage, he threatened to physically remove her or have her arrested if she spoke on stage for more than 60 seconds. Her comments on stage were improvised. She then went backstage and read the entire speech to the press. Exactly what became of the Oscar is unknown.
The incident provoked the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences to rule out proxy acceptance of Academy Awards thenceforth.

Sa njenog sajta:

Contrary to misinformation which has been published on the internet, Sacheen Littlefeather is indeed of true Native American Indian descent. Sacheen was born Marie Cruz in Salinas, California. Her mother is French-German-Dutch, and her father was from the White Mountain Apache and Yaqui tribes from Arizona. "Cruz" is her father's recognized tribe name. Sacheen took the name "Sacheen Littlefeather" after high school to reflect her natural heritage.  She is not a "Mexican actress" as Roger Ebert incorrectly reported.

Sacheen began her acting career at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California in the early 1970's. In 1973, Sacheen was chosen by Marlon Brando to accept his Oscar for his the portrayal of Don Corleone in "The Godfather."  Mr. Brando wanted to bring national attention to the treatment of American Indians and the siege at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

Ms. Sacheen Cruz Littlefeather has been very active in the Native American Bay Area community. She was one of the original occupiers on Alcatraz Island to protest civil rights violations against the Indian people.  She has also been active in numerous cultural events and pow wows. Currently, Sacheen is the co-ordinator of the Kateri Prayer Circle in San Francisco.

Sacheen has also appeared in such movies as: "The Trial of Billy Jack," "The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight," and "Winter Hawk," and in various television roles.
