Title: On-line casopisi
Post by: Melkor on 15-10-2011, 01:41:41
Nismo ih nesto pominjali.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone (http://thecsz.com/index.html)

A decade into the 21st century, the world of books, the world of the arts, the world of criticism have all been caught up in violent, unpredictable change. A large part of this change has been unleashed by a continual stream of technological innovations that impact our daily lives and even our personal as well as professional relationships. Technology is changing how we read and what we read, is challenging the very forms and genres in which we write, and is making criticism and reflection more valuable and necessary than it's ever been.

Despite the many and continual changes reshaping the world of books and the arts, one factor remains constant: work by women writers is always assigned a marginal status in critical venues (except, of course, in venues that focus exclusively on work by women writers).

The CSZ aims to treat work by women as vital and central rather than marginal. What we see, what we talk about, and how we talk about it matters. Seeing, recognizing, and understanding is what makes the world we live in. And the world we live in is, itself, a sort of subduction zone writ large.

Mission Statement

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we live in the Cascadia subduction zone. Massive, almost unimaginable earthquakes lurk in our past and loom in our future. Frequently we experience "slow earthquakes" that move the earth beneath us, imperceptible except through technology. Occasionally a mountaintop blows, awing us with its power. The denser plate of oceanic crust—the Juan de Fuca Plate—is being forced deep into the Earth's interior beneath the North American continental plate in a process known as subduction, and as the plate encounters high temperatures and pressures that partially melt solid rock, some of this newly formed magma rises toward the Earth's surface to erupt, forming a chain of volcanoes above the subduction zone (Brantley,1994, Volcanoes of the United States).Humans like to think of the earth as the ultimate symbol of stability: hence the cliché "down-to-earth." But in the Cascadia subduction zone, "down-to-earth" necessarily means something else. To be grounded, here, is to be ever mindful of the plates shifting below us, slipping and striking and moving magma, of sloping fault lines that separate and yet merge, of one plate being inexorably pushed beneath another, with enormous consequences.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone aims to bring reviews, criticism, interviews, intelligent essays, and flashes of creative artwork (visual and written) to a readership hungry for discussion of work by not only men but also women. Work by women continually receives short  shrift in most review publications. And yet the majority of readers are women. Ron Hogan writes in an August 2010 post on Beatrice.com, "[Jennifer] Weiner and [Jodi] Picoult, among others, are giving us a valuable critique of a serious problem with the way the [New York] Times [Book Review]—and, frankly, most of the so-called literary establishment—treats contemporary fiction. Which is to say: They ignore most of it, and when it comes to the narrow bandwidth of literature they do cover, their performance is underwhelming, 'not only meager but shockingly mediocre,' as former LA Times Book Review director Steve Wasserman said three years ago. And it hasn't gotten any better since then, leaving us with what Jennifer Weiner describes as "a disease that's rotting the relationship between readers and reviewers."

The relationship between readers and reviewers interests us. We want to bring attention to work critics largely ignore and offer a wider, less narrowly conceived view of the literary sphere. In short, we will review work that interests us, regardless of its genre or the gender of its author. We will blur the boundaries between critical analysis, review, poetry, fiction, and visual arts. And we will do our best to offer our readers a forum for discussion that takes the work of women as vital and central rather than marginal. What we see, what we talk about, and how we talk about it matters. Seeing, recognizing, and understanding is what makes the world we live in. And the world we live in is, itself, a sort of subduction zone writ large. Pretending that the literary world has not changed and is not changing is like telling oneself that Earth is a solid, eternally stable ball of rock.

Hm, baš su požurili... to mu dođe kao morale booster poduhvat, a? :)

Author announcement: Bruce Sterling kicks off Arc 1.1 (http://arcfinity.tumblr.com/post/16581029933/sterling)

"Visionaries, prophets and seers are common to all mankind," says Bruce Sterling, "but only societies with science can breed futurists."

Arc is a magazine about the future, but we're still working out what that means. So we asked one of Sterling, one of science fiction's more astute writers and commentators to explain: what is futurism anyway?

Title: Survival of the Fittest: Science Fiction Magazines
Post by: PTY on 06-03-2012, 20:07:13
What a curious species, the science fiction magazine. If you consider that first issue of Amazing Stories, published in April 1926, as the birth of the modern science fiction magazine, then the science fiction magazine has survived in one form or another for nearly 86 years. This despite constant proclamations that science fiction is dying. Why has the science fiction magazine survived as long as it has?
This is not to say a magazine cannot be killed. We have seen countless magazines die, some after only a single issue. But they are inevitably replaced by another magazine, one that is perhaps more durable than its predecessor, one that lasts somewhat longer. And when that one dies, still another comes along to take its place. There is an almost evolutionary battle taking place that has made the science fiction magazine, despite its seeming precariousness, a fit venue for the literature. One might die, but it will be replaced, and never has the species died out entirely.
I think that there are several important reasons for this.
But it is the stories that drives the magazines. It is the stories that win the audiences. For more than 85 years science fiction magazines have provided one of the few commercial outlets for short fiction, and in doing so, they've taken the art form from a simple entertainment to a level of respectability as an art that I think was never really even imagined in the days of Hugo Gernsback. Today there are many excellent science fiction magazines producing a seemingly endless stream of outstanding short fiction. And so when I see the occasional proclamation that science fiction is dying–or that the science fiction magazines are dying–I smile inwardly and think about the long history of the magazine and how rugged and tough it is. All of the evidence I see over the course of 85 years and right down to today tells me something different. Science fiction magazines might be evolving. One may drop off here and another pop up there. But dying? I don't think so. It's survival of the fittest out there and the science fiction magazines, improbably as it may seem, are among those fittest.
And thank goodness for that. There's nothing quite like cracking open the latest issue of a science fiction magazine and skimming the table of contents to see what's in store this month. The magazines have evolved and adapted so well that I am almost never disappointed by what I find.

Perhaps it goes without saying (though I will, anyway) that as an editor of Innsmouth Free Press (http://www.innsmouthfreepress.com/), writer and lifetime fan of the speculative genres, I've read a whole lot of science fiction, fantasy and horror. I've read it in published form, critique groups, fanfic, and slush. No surprise, then, that I've seen the good, the bad, the awful, and the ugly – not always in the order of published/critique/fanfic/slush, either.

Have I read everything? No. I've read a lot, but there are always writers out there that surprise me. They may be the minority of what I read, but they exist. They're not even rare. As an editor, do I pick the best that I read from the slush? I'm going to be really honest here – I don't. I pick what I enjoyed enough to want to read again and then still liked. Your story may be technically good. It may even be brilliant. But if it didn't scare me, make me laugh, or at least buckle my swash, I'm not going to buy it.

I'm not one of those editors who think they've read it all and are arbiters of quality because they've read a lot of slush. I don't act snobby about my huge slush pile and brag about it by putting down the unfortunates I reject. I'm just an editor of a small Lovecraft zine. I don't try to pick the next Hugo. Our zine is far too small to be noticed by the awards committees. If that's the fate you want for your story, don't submit to us.

John Joseph Adams (http://www.johnjosephadams.com/) writes in to tell us about a new project, for which he is seeking funding through Kickstarter.

Nightmare Magazine (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnjosephadams/nightmare-magazine) is a monthly magazine of horror and dark fantasy short fiction which will be published both online and in ebook format. This Kickstarter is intended to help fund the first issue and to get the magazine off the ground.

More about the magazine:
In Nightmare's pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror. No subject is off-limits, and we will be encouraging our writers to take chances with their fiction and push the envelope.
Edited by bestselling anthologist John Joseph Adams, every month Nightmare will bring you a mix of originals and reprints, and featuring a variety of authors—from the bestsellers and award-winners you already know to the best new voices you haven't heard of yet. When you read Nightmare, it is our hope that you'll see where horror comes from, where it is now, and where it's going.
Nightmare will also include nonfiction, fiction podcasts, and Q&As with our authors that go behind-the-scenes of their stories. Our planned publication schedule each month will include two pieces of original fiction and two fiction reprints, along with a feature interview and an artist gallery showcasing our cover artist. We will publish ebook issues on the first of every month, which will be available for sale in ePub format via our website and also available in other formats such as Kindle and Nook. We will also offer subscriptions to our ebook edition in a variety of formats. Each issue's contents will be serialized on our website throughout the month, with new features publishing on the first four Wednesdays of every month.

See the Nightmare Magazine Kickstarter page for more details (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnjosephadams/nightmare-magazine)...

Djibril al-Ayad is general editor of The Future Fire (http://futurefire.net/index.html), an online magazine of social-political speculative fiction. In the past, TFF published themed issues on Feminist SF and Queer SF, and two guest-edited, themed anthologies are currently in development: Outlaw Bodies (http://futurefire.net/about/outlawbodies.html), themed around trans, queer and disability issues with a cyberpunk flavor, edited by Lori Selke; and We See a Different Frontier (http://peerbackers.com/projects/we-see-a-different-frontier/home/), which will publish colonialism-themed stories from outside of the white, anglo, first-world perspective, edited by this interviewer (which was missing from this site in the past few months mostly due to this project).

The story of We See a Different Frontier (http://peerbackers.com/projects/we-see-a-different-frontier/home/) is already too long to be told in an introduction to an interview. To learn more about it, I strongly recommend you read:I decided to interview Djibril not just because of the project, but for all the great job The Future Fire has been doing tackling *ticklish subjects*, in the words of Slavoj Zizek: the outsider, the perceived minorities, the voiceless. That was the reason I approached him in the first place to propose the abovementioned anthology. Because he cares. With you, Djibril al-Ayad:

jos malo apdejta za The Future Fire:

http://peerbackers.com/projects/we-see-a-different-frontier/ (http://peerbackers.com/projects/we-see-a-different-frontier/)

The initial target of $3000 was surpassed in the first 40 days, so whatever happens now, the colonialism-themed issue of TFF as described below will happen. But if we can reach our new target of $4000 in the next ten days, We See a Different Frontier will not be an issue of a magazine with 7-8 stories, but a full book-length anthology with over 60,000 words of fiction. Please continue to show your love to this project, and spread the word about our extended target.

We are raising funds to publish a special issue/anthology of colonialism-themed speculative fiction from outside the first-world viewpoint, co-edited by Fabio Fernandes and published by The Future Fire (http://futurefire.net/).

Colonialism is still a thorn on the side of humankind. Many of the problems of the Third World, for instance, are due to the social-political-economic matrix imposed on its countries by the First World countries since the 17th century (e.g. the manufacture by European powers of arbitrary borders and tribal conflicts in Africa, and then the creation of Arab countries to defeat the Ottoman Empire in WWI). The balance of power is changing in the 21st Century, but it's still essential to look back if we want to truly understand the forces at play in the political and cultural panoramas of Third World countries—and even in countries that hardly can be labeled as Third World, like the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

Electric Velocipede's Kickstarter Project In the week leading up to Worldcon, I launched a Kickstarter campaign for Electric Velocipede (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnklima/electric-velocipede). If you've never heard of Electric Velocipede (http://www.electricvelocipede.com/) it's an eclectic, speculative fiction magazine. The magazine was founded in 2001 and has published at least two issues (and the occasional double issue) every year since. In 2009 it won the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine. It's also been nominated for the World Fantasy Award four times and had several of its stories reprinted in year's best anthologies.

In addition to its critical acclaim, Electric Velocipede has been a place for people to encounter excellent writing that's just a little different. We particularly pride ourselves on finding new short fiction voices in the field. Among the writers who published early work with Electric Velocipede include Catherynne M. Valente, Hal Duncan, Aliette de Bodard, Rachel Swirsky, Shira Lipkin, and many more.

And it's not just new voices; established writers have also graced Electric Velocipede's pages. Jeffrey Ford, Jeff VanderMeer, Liz Williams, Jay Lake, Alex Irvine, Marly Youmans, Chris Roberson, Genevieve Valentine, Ken Liu, and others have all been here, what are you waiting for?

We're looking to raise $5,000 to cover the costs of publishing four issues of the magazine in 2013. We're putting out two issues in the second half of 2012, so we'll already be on a quarterly schedule and ready to continue that pace for 2013. At the time of writing this, we've raised almost 85% of our funding with more than two weeks to go. Reaching our goal looks very much in our grasp.

If that happens, then we can talk about stretch goals. Very simply, every additional $5,000 we raise is another year of Electric Velocipede. But we have a few other ideas, including:
We realize that stretch goals are just that, something beyond what you initially ask for. We hope we get the chance to worry ourselves about stretch goals, but it might not happen. The real goal is getting the funding to continue to bring amazing fiction to readers. For those of you who haven't experienced Electric Velocipede before, here's a sampling of new and old material that's online:

Priorder za prvenca je bio $2.99 a nudila se i opcija godišnje pretplate sa popustom, nešto oko $35. Mislim da je cena prihvatljiva, ali nisam uzela tu opciju zato što sam već preplavljena magazinima, ne stignem da pročitam ni ove na koje sam pretplaćena. A bilo je malko i logističkog štucanja oko lansiranja, otud i slanje preko mejla.

Dear Nightmare supporter,
Thanks again for supporting Nightmare Magazine and helping us launch this new venture. Attached you will find our debut issue in both epub and mobi format. We had hoped to have our fancy new store software setup but it's been a bit recalcitrant, so we'll take it out behind the shed and whip it into shape and hopefully get it working properly some time tomorrow.
Meanwhile, we didn't want to delay getting you your ebook edition of issue 1, so here it is! (And if you're a backer who selected a reward tier that comes with additional goodies, never fear! Those will be on the way to you soon.)

I hope you enjoy reading issue #1 as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If you do, by all means, please tell a friend!

Best,

Arc 1.3 – FREE for a limited time (http://www.arcfinity.org/buy.php)

Arc was created as a digital publication and is designed to be easily read on a wide range of digital devices.  To read Arc on the device of your choosing, be it Apple, Android or a PC, download the Zinio app, or if you'd prefer a DRM-free e-pub version then visit Google Play.

The future may have taken on a distinctly digital hue but we don't yet believe that print is dead, so you can also buy a collectible print edition of Arc (http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/443507). You won't find this in your local shop as it's only available through our partner Magcloud, where it's printed to order.

QuoteOK so FINALLY the first copy of Michael Moorcock's New Worlds magazine is available. This is an e-zine featuring 4 original stories by new writers, an exclusive non fiction piece by Iain Banks, some general reviews, links to news, a gallery of art work etc etc and 4 videos filmed at last years British Library talks, of which further will sections will be published in future issues. We will be creating a feedback page and WILL take all our feedback under consideration. This is our first issue and we have worked hard for a zero cash investment to try and get this out, it will improve over the coming weeks and if you buy issue 1 now and we add content later, you will have access to this too. Below will be a short lesson on how to buy the mag. Please enjoy and feel free to vent your spleen on these pages until our feedback pages are up and running.

First you need to register at the website, which at the moment FB is blocking (one of the problems we are working on) but it is newworlds dot co dot uk

After this you will get an email asking you to verify your address, once you have done so then you can spend three of your hard earned pounds and purchase issue 1!

Our non fiction, news and reviews section will be opening up for contributions, as will our art and music areas, this experiment, should it succeed will NOT just be about fiction but anything that is speculative and just plain weird, we will publish details of this in due course.

Thanks for the patience.

Kaže Doktorov na BoingBoingu:

Geoffrey sez, "In April of 2011, Boing Boing posted that Michael Moorcock's New Worlds was coming back to life. Well, Issue 1 went live this past October. The website is slick and the stories are great, there is only one problem: no one seems to know that New Worlds has returned. I know Boing Boing hates to see the good citizens of the interwebs miss out on anything grand, so I had to pass this along."

And it is grand. There's an essay by Iain Banks on Ayn Rand and L Ron Hubbard, ferchrissakes (but the annoying regwall is really annoying).

Eclipse Online to close effective immediately (http://www.nightshadebooks.com/2013/04/04/eclipse-online-to-close-effective-immediately/)

by admin (http://www.nightshadebooks.com/author/admin/)
on April 4, 2013
in Eclipse Online (http://www.nightshadebooks.com/category/eclipse/), News (http://www.nightshadebooks.com/category/news/)

Seven years ago Eclipse One was published and went on to be part of one of the most respected original science fiction and fantasy anthology series of its time, featuring major awards winners and nominees, stories destined to become classics, and either winning or being nominated for the World Fantasy, Aurealis, Ditmar, and Locus awards.

In October 2012 Jonathan Strahan and Night Shade Books decided to relaunch Eclipse as Eclipse Online, an online magazine featuring two new previously unpublished stories and artwork by Kathleen Jennings each month. Eclipse Online has featured stories by Christopher Rowe, K.J. Parker, Eleanor Arnason, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Lavie Tidhar, Christopher Barzak, Genevieve Valentine, F. Brett Cox, Susan Palwick, Peter M. Ball, E. Lily Yu and An Owomoyela.

It is with sadness, therefore, that we are announcing that Eclipse Online has ceased publication effective immediately. All stories in inventory have been returned to their authors, and no new stories will be considered for publication. All authors have been paid. Any queries regarding other payments should be directed to Night Shade Books.

Editor Jonathan Strahan said today: "While I am disappointed to see Eclipse Online close, I will always be grateful to Jason Williams, Jeremy Lassen, Ross Lockhart, and the team at Night Shade Books for their enthusiastic and energetic support of Eclipse over the past seven years. It was a joy and privilege to work with the authors and with Night Shade to produce such wonderful work, and I am deeply grateful to them all. There are no future plans for Eclipse at this time, but Night Shade will always be a critical, valued part of its past."

Each issue revolves around a central theme, examining genre fiction through focussed articles, fiction and reviews. Linked to this is each issue's interview with a featured author, whose writing connects to the issue's topic. Regular features include The Unbelievers (http://www.holdfastmagazine.com/unbelievers-issue-1/4578737352), in which our two heroic editors attempt to convert self-confessed fantasy haters, a themed playlist (http://www.holdfastmagazine.com/playlist-issue1-issue1/4577390147) that gives readers a suitable atmosphere in which to browse, and A Letter To... (http://www.holdfastmagazine.com/a-letter-to-issue-1/4578737232) tells an author how influential and inspiring they are.
We are now accepting submissions (http://www.holdfastmagazine.com/submission-guidelines-issue-2/4580429903) for Issue#2: Animals, Beasts & Creatures. Are you fascinated by what lurks within and what hides in the shadows? We look at the relationship between speculative fiction and animals, whether talking badgers or fire-breathing dragons.
Co-editors Laurel Sills and Lucy Smee became friends in a cold, dark, terrifying caravan in Wales at the 2013 Sci-Fi Weekender. A combination of delirium, excitement and hypothermia inspired them to start the kind of publication that they would want to read – one that's insightful, funny and analytical. With a shared interest in feminism and speculative fiction, they decided for Issue#1 to look at the underrepresentation of women in the past, present and future, and to celebrate all the wonderful things that women in genre fiction have already achieved.

THE APOCALYPSE TRIPTYCH will include stories by authors such as Paolo Bacigalupi, Seanan McGuire, Ben H. Winters, Elizabeth Bear, Scott Sigler, Robin Wasserman, and many more. Additionally, each volume will include a brand new story by Hugh Howey set in the world of his bestselling novel Wool.
