"Hooperovi" scenaristi, Adam Gierasch i Jace Anderson, pišu scenario za finalni deo Argentove trilogije o vešticama. Ovo je svakako zanimljiv obrt, imajući u vidu da je Argento, do sada, scenarije za svoje filmove pisao sam - ili uz pomoć nekog svog italijanskog saradnika...
Suspiria je remek delo, Inferno je odličan, ali ne bez problema (čitaj: druga polovina filma)... Ostaje da se vidi šta će biti sa finalnim filmom i da li good ol' Dario može da još uvek ispovrti nešto dostojno Horror Panteona... Raduje činjenica da će Claudio Simonetti pisati muziku, ali jasno je da je ovo projekat "visokog rizika".
Snimanje treba da počne u aprilu 2006 - nadam se samo da neće ispasti da se radi o prvoaprilskoj šali.
... a ja pomislio da neko snima horror u kome će Majka Tereza biti neka baba-roga ili neki drugi monstrum...
Ovo nikako nije dobra vest, i drastično – već u startu- smanjuje šanse da treća Mama bude barem blizu nivoa prve (što je ionako nerealno) ili barem, da budemo skromniji i realniji – druge (čitaj: INFERNO).
Vest vidim kao još jedna dokaz da je Arđento skroz izgubio kompas, da je podilkanio, odlepio...
Šteta što je Richard Stanley trenutno zauzet pripremanjem svog novog filma: on se svojevremeno otvoreno nudio da s Arđentom piše, ili bar da mu 'doktoruje' skript – a trenutno je sigurno najkompetentniji za TAJ posao.
Ehhh... Šmrc...
Videćemo... Ja ne želim da verujem da će TREĆA MAJKA biti shit... Mislim da iz Argenta može da se izmuze još jedan dobar film - nešto kao labuđa pesma... Ako se bude držao svojih vizuelnih osobenosti kao u prva 2 filma: imaćemo praznik za oči, a ni to nije malo.
Nisam baš siguran ni da je Richard Stanley idalno rešenje - ali Argentu definitivno treba pomoć oko scenarija....

Posebno me plaši to što je Arđentu u poslednje vreme potrebna pomoć i oko REŽIJE! Hintovi za njegovu JENNIFER nisu nimalo obećavajući, naročito u svetlu svega što je potpisao posle STENDALA, kao poslednjeg podnošljivog, i čak gledljivog svog filma.

So we spent our time working with Dario [on the script] in Rome. It was important for him that we do it there. He wanted us to soak up the atmosphere, the catacombs, etc., since the film will be shot exclusively there.... It's fast-paced, and more violent than you can shake a stick at! This is a horror movie, plain and simple. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of murders! It really wraps up the trilogy, but is quite different from the first two. Dario didn't want to do the same thing again... I think it's really going to be the movie that everyone is hoping for. It's a 'wow' kind of film, from the very first scene.

Stvari se zaokružuju... Adam Gierasch je ekskluzivno za ZS izjavio: It starts shooting in late October and I'm so excited about it, I can't speak. It's going to be everything everyone wants it to be. It's very, very Dario. It's a fairly big movie, taking place in a number of different locations, and it has a bunch of very scary bad guys in it. And it's easily going to be one of his bloodiest movies; there are scenes that are just ridiculously gruesome. Working with Dario has been fantastic; he's so creative and so precise, and he's very excited about the project too.

Izgleda da više nema dileme: Majka suza uskoro postaje stvarnost.
Pouzdani Variety je obznanio da snimanje počinje 30. oktobra - za svega 10-ak dana! Azijino učešće je potvrđeno :!:. Ona će igrati američku studentkinju (?) koja u Rimu otvara drevnu urnu i tako nenamerno izaziva najezdu veštica. Pored Azije, potvrđeno je da će u filmu nastupiti veterani: Nemac Udo Kier, Italijan Massimo Sarchielli (s kojim je Arđento već sarađivao u filmu Non ho sonno - ako se dobro sećam, tamo je igrao skitnicu) i Francuz Philippe Leroy.
Majka suza se najavljuje kao Dario Argento's return to the slasher-style filmmaking that won him a following, što je obećavajuće.
Film će producirati italijanska Medusa i američki Myriad Pictures (Jeepers Creepers 2).

I witnessed Italian Horror History being made on November 15, 2006. In a distinctively Dario rococo decorated apartment on the Corso Govone in the swankiest of Turin neighbourhoods, three generations of Argentos came together as one. Finally. There was Dario and Daria Nicolodi, joking and laughing, doting on their grand-daughter Anna-Lou as all three lovingly watched Asia act out one of the key scenes in THE THIRD MOTHER, the hugely anticipated sequel to SUSPIRIA and INFERNO. When Daria took her first, admittedly, hesitant steps on set, it was like royalty had arrived. The atmosphere was incredible and every single person in the crew was clearly conscious of what a momentous occasion was actually happening before our very eyes. After decades of arguments over the authorship of SUSPIRIA, the subsequent infighting, recriminations and relationship fall-outs, here were the key players in the saga together again at last. And with their world famous actress daughter, continuing the beloved horror mythology they created in the presence of grand-daughter Anna Lou, who looks a dead-ringer for Daria. I admit I was so overcome, I cried. And then laughed, because in context of this sequel being about the Mother of Tears, it seemed entirely appropriate. Director of photography Frederic Fasano (SCARLET DIVA, DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK?) noticed my emotional response and just said one word "Magic". Which set me off even more because it made me think of Jessica Harper's line in SUSPIRIA, "Magic is all around us". It certainly was that night and everyone was touched by it. In all the years I've been 'stalking' Dario, I've had many memorable moments. None will ever equal this night.
For the first time in our long association Dario has asked me to be discreet over certain aspects of THE THIRD MOTHER. He wants you all to be as shocked as possible by some of the outrageously obscene set pieces he has devised with co-writers Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch (TOOLBOX MURDERS). Although many of you will have read my 'controversial' script review on this site, much of what I described in that has now fallen by the wayside. Character names and the ending have been changed, sequences shifted in the narrative and improvised by Dario seconds before they were shot. This is the first film he's directed without extensive storyboards because he wanted to be "in the moment". Asia's performance as Sarah Mandy, an art history restoration student, whose destiny is tied in with the re-born Mother of Tears, is part of that experimental flux too. Once the film completes shooting in mid-December, extensive post-production will provide the visual lustre we are all expecting from a sequel fighting the shimmering sublime looks of both SUSPRIA and INFERNO. Fasano will only reveal at this point that the film will begin in cold muted colours before gradually getting redder and redder as it progresses towards the epic climax.
Let me set the record straight over a few facts. The title is definitely THE THIRD MOTHER/LA TERZA MADRE. MOTHER OF TEARS was never in the running as far as Dario was concerned. That was the title the originally contacted American sales agent Myriad wanted for international distribution. It was the title on the script I read. But, as of now, Myriad (the JEEPERS CREEPERS duo) is out of the picture. Instead the Italian company Medusa (THE CARD PLAYER) bit the bullet, bolstered by the fan anticipation (every location has been besieged by on-lookers) and wholly financed the film themselves. Myriad may still be involved at some future point but as Dario told me, 'All this film needs to sell it is a poster saying THE THIRD MOTHER, the tag-line 'the sequel to SUSPIRIA and INFERNO', over a picture of Asia looking gorgeous".
Dario wanted to make THE THIRD MOTHER now because of the artistic freedom he had on his two 'Masters of Horror' episodes, JENIFER and PELTS. (Most of the crew went to the Italian premiere of PELTS at the Turin Film Festival on November 12. It was the usual camera flashing, autograph-hunting, mob madness). He explains, "I had producers telling me I could do whatever I wanted, no censorship. With no restrictions on my imagination ideas for THE THIRD MOTHER suddenly bubbled over like sparkling champagne". With these ideas fashioned into a wonderfully evocative screenplay by Anderson and Gierasch, with fabulously meaningful touchstones to both prior films, Dario has come up with a "Kandinsky slice of burnished surreality, where savage sexual imagery will compete with the hard violence to gloriously shocking effect". Think SOCIETY on a grander scale for an insight into what you can expect the cruellest and most beautiful Mother (played by stunningly tall DAYS OF LOVE Israeli actress Moran Atias) to indulge in.
I went to three locations during my time in Turin. One was a cemetery in Andezeno about 24 km from the city. That's where the urn containing the Mother of Tears' ashes is discovered. The second was the Molinette Hospital where Sarah's lover Michael Pierce (Adam James, THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO, and numerous Brit TV series) looks in on a comatose Monsignor Brusca (Franco Leo, FELLINI SATYRICON) and discusses supernatural forces with Padre Milesi (Tommaso Banfi). Both of those locations were spent in the company of writers Anderson and Gierasch who I must tell you I adored. They know how important THE THIRTD MOTHER is to Dario's fans. It is to them too and touchingly so. The third was the already mentioned apartment scenes where Sarah takes refuge with her lesbian friend Marta (Valeria Cavalli, Lamberto Bava's A BLADE IN THE DARK), and her lover Elga (Silvia Rubino). It's there white witch Marta teaches Sarah how to summon up the ghost of her mother Elisa (Nicolodi) via an enchanted powder puff. This complicated scene featured Latin-style chanting, much dialogue, green screen special effects and Asia making my spine-tingle with her acting intensity.
The role of Sarah is one Asia asked for. She summoned Dario to Paris, where she was making Olivier Assayas' BOARDING GATE, and said she wanted to read the script. She loved it. "There are still issues between me and my father", she said. "But I had to be in it. It's the family heritage and it's an honour to be a part of it. The shock is how calm and comfortable Dario is making it!" Indeed. In one of the most candid interviews Dario has ever given me, he said, "Look, I know people haven't liked a lot of my recent films. I was being experimental in my career and I learned a lot from it - enough to get me to the place where I can direct THE THIRD MOTHER with ease. I haven't felt any pressure despite the massive expectation out there. I'm doing what I know is great work. I never expected to feel that way over such a pivotal movie. If I was scared at any point in my thoughts about making it, such feelings have long since vanished. We're moving fast, Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni (playing Giselle, Sarah's work mate) and Udo Kier (Padre Johannes, the exorcist) are back in the fold where they belong, Asia is giving an amazing performance and the Brit actors (including Cristian Solimeno, playing detective Enzo Marchi) are terrific. SUSPIRIA and INFERNO were fairytale based. THE THIRD MOTHER is not. It's an entirely modern take on newly invented horror mythology because that's what this tortured and confusing world needs right now".
With the Cannes Film Festival asking Dario to complete the film in time for consideration as a 2007 competition contender, THE THIRD MOTHER is on brilliant course to herald a new era in the Argento universe. "If anyone is expecting me to give up, forget it", he exclaims. "My mother is 91 years old and still going strong. And so will I be". The exciting news doesn't stop there either. Depending on the Cannes outcome, which will impact on its Italian release dates, Dario and Asia have agreed to attend the proposed UK premiere at FrightFest 2007. I've also asked Coralina, Adam James and writers Anderson and Gierasch to be there too for what should be a truly fabulous event. THE THIRD MOTHER's glorious reign begins...

jedini problem sa ovakvim textovima je... što stvaraju preterana očekivanja... tako da sve i ako dario napravi OK film (u svetlu svojih novijih radova), pitanje je da li će i koliko to zaista moći da priđe staroj slavi i filmovima na koje se nastavlja.

Posle 45 dana, Argento je završio snimanje! Meni se čini da je mesec i po prekratak rok da se snimi jedan epski horor...
Da li neko zna koliko je trajalo snimanje prva 2 dela trilogije?
Jebiga, DOBA NEVINOSTI će se snimati 45 dana. TITO I JA je sniman 58 radnih dana. A3 je sniman 9 nedelja, što će reći negde oko 54 radna dana.
To je dosta kratak shoot za ovakav film jer Dario mora da ima dosta materijala u montaži, plus veliki set-pieceovi sa kompleksnim pokretima kamere se snimaju i po par dana.
Ono što me iz gornjeg teksta najviše plaši je to što Dario želi da bude "in the moment" i ne radi storyboard. To mi liči na napade sujete koje sam iskusio sa starijim rediteljima, i iz kojih su proisticali njihovi najslabiji filmovi.
IL CARTAIO koji je dosta bedno izgledao je sniman 79 kalendarskih dana tj. 11 nedelja, sudeći po IMDbu sto ce reci najvise 68 radnih dana, ali verovatno manje radnih pošto postoje prelazni dani između noćnih i dnevnih snimanja.
IMDb kaže da su filmig dates za INFERNO 129 kalendarskih dana. E sad, to j snimano na više lokacja, danju, noću, na raznim mestima, itd. To je dakle film koji je sniman 18 sedmica, najviše 111 dana mada sumnjam da se radilo baš tako. u svakom slučaju ako IMDb ne laž, sniman je bar duplo duže od treće majke...
E sad, da se ne bi filmovi snimali u nedogled, u Americi na istom filmu radi par ekipa pa se neke stvari, neki pick up shotovi i detalji rade u isto vreme, ili sa više kamera. Međutim, i sa holivudskom ekipom, čini mi se da je ovo prekratko.
Ovo sam ja sad ovako polu-laički objasnio, sigurno milan može bolje.

želim da se uzdam u efikasnost USA timova koji nisu opušteni italijani kao ranije; takođe, ovaj film, čini mi se, treba da ima komplikovaniju postprodukciju, mnogo scena sa CGI-jem (koje, dakle, nije imao potrebe da snima 'praktično')...
ali opet, 45 dana...
još ako, za koji mesec, najave da će running time da bude oko 90' počeću da oštrim hladno oružje u mojoj crnoj kožnoj torbici sa postavom od crvenog somota...

zar je 2-2,5 meseca post-produkcije DOVOLJNO za jedan ovakav film? iz onog rivjua scenarija zvučalo je kao da svaka druga scena ima tonu CGI-efekata i ostalih konjplikacija...
PS: inače, u italijanskom delu vesti se najavljuje da dario na proleće ide u USA da snima novu epizodu u III sezoni MASTERS OF HORROR (dakle, i to je već rešena stvar: biće III sezona, i dario opet u njoj!)

kako i zašto NIKO od mejdžor sajtova nije javio o navodnom završetku, uključujući tu i darkdreams, koji 'spava' već pun mesec! bacih pogled i na forum drkdrmsa, ali ni tamo ne vidim nešto konkretno...
Koliko je znam - snimanje je završeno, i o tome sam već pisao na ovom topiku. Zanimljivo je da već nekoliko nedelja vlada totalno zatišje kada je ovaj projekat u pitanju - nikako da procuri neka nova fotka ili neki izveštaj, intervju... Film je očigledno u postprodukciji i nama ostaje da čekamo šta će ispasti.
Biće nešto sočno uskoro.

U okviru desetominutnog priloga (predstavljena su, između ostalog, i dva nova filma Pupija Avatija - od kojih jedan komedija a drugi horor), novi Argentov film je dobio oko pola minuta prostora - mislim da je prikazan deo trejlera, posto su kadrovi veoma brzo izmontirani. Neke od prizora možete videti gore (kvalitet nije najbolji, ali tako je kako je). Teško je izvući neki zaključak, ali mi se čini da će film biti brzog tempa, nasilan i pun Gota.

Da, to je taj film - mada su u prilogu pomenuli naslov na italijanskom. Nažalost, prikazali su samo par kadrova iz komedije u kojoj lice ostarelog TV glumca bude unakaženo neuspelom plastičnom operacijom.

Znam da ovo verovatno gotovo nikoga ne zanima, but here it goes... Premijera TREĆE MAJKE je pomerena za 31. oktobar, a Medusa zahteva od Argenta da za bioskopsko prikazivanje ublaži nasilje u filmu... Uncut verzija će, po svemu sudeći, postati dostupna tek kada film krene u DVD distribuciju...
Pazite, dole vas ceka mucho, mucho, mucho spoilera! Ipak, po meni, vredi procitati tekst, posto mi je sada sve izvesnije da ce LA TERZA MADRE biti, ako nista drugo, izuzetno interesantna...

In the first two installments of the "Witches Trilogy," Dario Argento told the stories of two "Mothers": Mater Suspiriorum in Freiburg ("Suspiria") and Mater Tenebrarum in New York ("Inferno"). In "The Third Mother," the focus is on another Mother–Mater Lacrimarum–the only survivor of the trio. This witch has been "sleeping" (in Rome) for centuries and is awakened by Sarah Mandy, a young American student from the Ancient Art Museum.
Mandy opens a mysterious urn. Inside is a red tunic, a dagger, and three talismans that allow the horrible witch to regain her powers, beauty, and youth. (The witch is played by the Israeli model Moran Atias.) The effects over the Eternal City are quickly seen: sudden or mysterious deaths, inexplicable suicides, and crimes of all kinds. While Sarah always mysteriously finds a way of escaping, her friend is killed by a bloody-thirsty little monkey, the baby boy of the museum's director, Mario Galimberti, disappears, and the person who sent Mandy the urn is killed by a stroke. With the frightful power of Mater Lacrimarum now free from its prison, other powerful witches from around the world converge on Rome to pay homage to the most beautiful and cruelest of the three Mothers.
The police doesn't help. It is convinced that Sarah and Mario are liars. As a result, the only people fighting the witches' supernatural powers are the trio of Sarah, Mario, who is trying to save his own son, and the exorcist Udo Kier.
Sarah then finds out she has supernatural powers. She doesn't know the source of her powers, until she finds out that her mother Elisa was a spiritual, healing, white witch, who was killed by Mater Suspiriorum, the mother of Sighs.
The priest tells Sarah and Mario the story of the three mothers, inspired by one of the maestros from gothic literature, Thomas De Quincey. A thousand years ago, on the coast of the Black Sea, three sisters gave life to witchcraft and wandered for years around the world causing death and destruction. Two were defeated and destroyed, but the third–Mater Lacrimarum–is back in all of her horror. The explanation is interrupted by the arrival of Valerya, the Ukrainian governess who, under the influence of the Mother of Tears, murders the priest.
However, in the underground, three demons and the old witch feed on the remains of the kidnapped baby. Elisa materializes in the powder that rises from a powder-box to warn her daughter Sarah of the growing danger of Mater Lacrimarum. The danger arrives quickly: the three demons and little murderous monkey enter the house where Sarah is staying. Within a few seconds and with the use of special effects, they kill Sarah's two friends. Upset, Sarah wanders through the street of Rome until she cathes a glimpse of a familiar face—it is Mario. However, he can't help her. Defeated by the witches, he has become a zombie. He is losing blood through his cut throat and tries to kill his former ally. Sarah manages to get away one more time. She sprays Mario with a flammable liquid–oh the dangers of a cigarette! He becomes a human torch.
Deciding to see things clearly, Sarah contacts Guglielmo De Witt (Philippe Leroy), a paralytic architect and alchemist, who sends her to Palazzo Varelli, which is rumored to be the Mother of Tears' shelter. And it is indeed. In the basement of the building, Sarah finds nightmarish visions inspired by Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights." In a room lit by candles, Mater Lacrimarum stands at an old altar surrounded by women in ecstasies who make sure to tear to pieces all of the men that Sarah could rely on. Attacked by the murderous little monkey, even Sarah is dragged in front of the witch. However, Sarah quickly tears the red tunic, which catches fire. The disconcerted witches move back, and the Mother's power is over. All hell breaks loose, and while Sarah looks for someone to help her, Argento's new film ends with earthquakes, quicksands, and floods of corpses—all in a show of special effects.
"The Third Mother" enables the director to reunite two ladies from his private and cinematographic life. Sarah is played by Asia Argento, his daughter and the protagonist of many of his films. Elisa is played by Daria Nicolodi, the director's "historical" companion and Asia's mother. Nicolodi was the screenwriter of "Suspiria" and acted in "Inferno," and in many other of the director's films.

For all you Argento fans the news isn't good on The Third Mother front. Dario's long-awaited sequel to Suspiria and Inferno is becoming something of a cause celebre in Italy and is having many ranting column inches devoted to it in the newspapers and magazine's there. Distributor and producer Medusa reeled in shock at Dario's first cut of the supernatural shocker that went far beyond any extreme they imagined. Didn't they read the script? So they sent him back into the editing rooms to make it more 'mainstream', i.e. attractive to overseas buyers who they thought wouldn't touch it with a barge pole in the original version. So far they've been right. The problems are all to do with the depiction of perverse sex in the witch gathering satanic scenes and one cannibal killing of a major character.
In my view their reaction completely misses the point. Suspiria was a huge worldwide hit because it broke so many taboos and barriers and is a classic due to Dario's vivid and masterly interpretation. That's what his fans want again, not a compromised vision. But, of course, we are now in the post Grindhouse meltdown and investments must be protected. If film companies looked at that scenario properly they would realise the financial folly of trying to make something like Grindhouse mainstream rather than play it in the natural homes of true grindhouse movies. Strange that ace marketers Harvey and Bob Weinstein got that so wrong and we will now have to suffer the stupid damage control of their wrong-headed campaign. Let's see if the uncut Tarantino version in Cannes goes someway to addressing the fall-out.
Argento is now in a standoff position with Medusa. He's not one to suffer fools gladly and is prepared to fight his corner. His reputation is still so great in Italy that it will be an interesting face-off. I hope for his sake, and ours, he wins and we see The Third Mother in all its gory and orgy glory.

Da, fotke su odličnog kvaliteta, i ima par vizuelnih dragulja u najavi, ali činjenica je sve još uvek neizvesno...
Dvadeset minuta Trećemajke je doživelo premijeru u Kanu... Reakcije su podeljene - a evo šta Alan Jones piše:
Hi Nick, up to my neck in the Cannes labyrinth! Myriad premiered 20 minutes of footage from MOTHER OF TEARS: THE THIRD MOTHER (US title) today (May 17) at 9.30 am at the Gray 3 cinema. The place was packed After a credit roll, and a warning that what we would be shown was very graphic and violent, eight lenghty scenes from the movie were unveiled. I do not want to go into specifics because major plot points were revealed. But the full opening was shown with Asia and Coralina opening the Mother of Tears' urn and the arrival of the demons and the evil monkey. The powder puff scene was next. This was the stuff I saw being filmed in Turin really well put together where Asia is shown how to summon up the spirit of her mother. Then it was the lesbian death scene carried out by the Man in the Overcoat with torture implements. Exorcist Udo Kier's major scene followed, plus Asia running through the panicked streets of Rome. Adam James major moment followed that with the finale reserved for the entrance of the Mother of Tears herself. I will say it was gory to the max and all the effects looked fantastic. The vibe in the room was mixed. People laughed at the monkey but all jumped at a terrific demonic scare. Talking to everyone afterwards the feeling was the acting was variable (what's new), the scripting had too much exposition (ditto) but that it was beautifully shot - lots of steadicam through the museum - and the photography was fabulous. You can't judge any movie in this bitty way so let's hope it all comes together by final print stage. An unqualified success though is Simometti's music. Wonderful. I'm still gagging to see the whole thing put together. October 18 is now the official Italian premiere date, it's opening the Rome Festival.

Dve mlade popularne glumice Rosario Douson i Asia Arđento sjajno su se zabavile na partiju koji je napravljen posle ,,Dizel" revije u Italiji. Devojke su popila dosta pića i zaplesale zajedno, štipkajući se i ljubeći se, kao jako bliske prijateljice na radost mnogobrojnih paparaca.

Došao sam u posed 3 klipa iz filma - u ukupnom trajanju od 15 minuta. Kvalitet snimka nije najbolji - snimano je kamerom iz ruke na nekoj konvenciji - ali beggars cannot be choosers...
Na osnovu inserata (i to još problematičnog kvaliteta) nije lako izvući validan sud... U svakom slučaju, ono što je sigurno jeste da će smrti biti brutalna. Video sam 4-5 prizora pogibelji: krvavo je i efektno, mada prebrzo za moj ukus...

When "Mother of Tears: The Third Mother" has its world premiere Thursday as the opening night film of the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival -- the same slot that unleashed "Borat" last year -- it will complete a trilogy of films that stretches back some 30 years for Italian director Dario Argento.
Considered a masterful maker of idiosyncratic, expressionistic horror films, at once gorgeous and grotesque, irrational and utterly perfect, the 66-year-old filmmaker's commercial and critical standing has fallen in recent years. Preceded as it is by two of his best-regarded films, 1977's "Suspiria" and 1980's "Inferno," the concluding chapter of "The Three Mothers" trilogy raises one immediate question: Why now?
"Creation is not on a schedule," said Argento recently by telephone from Rome. "I'm a strange soul. I didn't want to stay in the cage of the trilogy; I wanted to explore other landscapes. After 'Inferno' I thought, 'Not now.' And then three years ago I had an idea, like a trumpet in my ear, and I thought, 'OK, now I want to finish the trilogy.' "
"It's a question I've repeatedly asked him," said Alan Jones via e-mail, as to what drove the filmmaker to finally complete the trilogy. Author of a book on the filmmaker, "Profondo Argento," Jones visited the "Mother of Tears" shoot.
"I got the feeling he was ready to broach the subject matter again because he wanted to restore his tarnished reputation. . . . It might also be because he finally wants to draw a line under it and stop the endless questions about it."
In "Mother of Tears," the discovery of an ancient urn sets in motion a Second Age of Witches, an apocalyptic end times complete with rampaging covens of glamorously decadent witches, waves of suicides and chaos in the streets. Only a young woman who discovers that her own deceased mother was a white witch, and that she has powers of her own, can bring a stop to the mounting pandemonium.
For fans of the director, "Mother of Tears" may come to represent both a career-capping victory lap and a new beginning. Although the film can very much be seen as a return to form for Argento, it also puts new twists on his filmmaking. Rather than the strictly storybook fantasy world of "Suspiria" or "Inferno," the new film is a heady mix of rough-hewn, street-level realism and the boldly stylized set-pieces of Argento's signature works.
There has been a fair amount of online nail-biting among Argento watchers over the outcome of the film, as there are concerns its reception may tarnish the standing of the previous trilogy films.
"I was filled with trepidation," Midnight Madness programmer Colin Geddes said of his feelings before seeing "Mother of Tears." "I invited a friend along as a second opinion, and we kept turning to each other, :!: :!: :!: 'Can you believe what you just saw?' It's really a return to his roots in a lot of respects. It's like watching a glorious Italian horror film from the late '70s and early '80s. There are scenes where the audience is going to totally freak out." :!: :!: :!:
Perhaps part of what has brought out the best in Argento is the participation of his daughter, Asia Argento, who stars in the film, as well as Asia's mother, Daria Nicolodi. All three have notoriously tempestuous relationships, and neither Asia Argento nor Nicolodi have appeared in one of Dario's films for many years. The return of Nicolodi in particular is significant for completing the trilogy as she was the co-writer of "Suspiria" and one of the lead actresses in "Inferno."
Argento's films have always been family affairs. The director's earliest films were produced by his father, Salvatore, and his brother Claudio is a producer on "Mother of Tears." Claudio's son Nilo is also an assistant director on the film.
Asia Argento emerged as the dark diva of the art house at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where her roles in three films earned her much press and praise from critics, including many who called her "the queen of Cannes." In particular, her appearance in Abel Ferrara's "Go Go Tales" -- in which as part of a stripper routine she tongue kisses a Rottweiler -- is already the stuff of Cannes infamy. "Mother of Tears" returns her to the family fold for the first time since having achieved her own international acclaim.
"We had a bit of a falling out for a few years," Asia Argento said of her father, "and I told him as soon as I knew he was doing it that I wanted to be in the movie. I knew this was the best thing for our relationship. We don't bring any of the stuff that's unresolved on the shoot, so when we're shooting movies we are in complete harmony and don't want to spoil these great moments with stuff that is less important, the mundane stuff, life stuff, which is less important than making a movie that will last forever. In "Mother of Tears," Asia Argento's character is beset by witches, dumped in a pool of rotting bodies, has a nude shower scene and is chased by an evil little monkey. It is tough to imagine American directors such as Steven Spielberg or Ron Howard subjecting their own daughters to such torments, and yet Dario Argento shrugs off the suggestion that his relationship with Asia as father-daughter and director-performer is complicated.
"Many people talk about that," he says. " 'How can you kill your daughter?' But, no. She is an actress. This is a film, and she knows very well it is a film. She was born in a family of artists."
Asia Argento, however, allows that filming the "sexual stuff," particularly when younger, did leave an impression. "Swimming through a swamp of corpses is easy compared to having to take my bra off when I was 16."
Far from preparing to retire, Argento seems energized by "Mother of Tears," and he recalled with impish delight the details of shooting the film's finale in catacombs beneath Rome.
"We were shooting something," Lee Wilson, consulting producer and visual effects supervisor on the film, recalled of one particularly graphic moment, "and without going into specifics of what it was, I reacted to it, and he turned to me and said, 'Too much?' He knows when he's going to get a strong reaction, but if that weren't the case, then we wouldn't have been making a Dario Argento film."

Details, I can't give you folks right now it being 3:45am, but, the monkey is worth the show, the look is very natural as opposed to the more gel-like blues, reds, and greens etc. The acting wasn't bad. The dialogue is more informative than any of them from what I remember. The scare factor is there for jumps anyways. I'll have to be more detailed tomorrow. I am beat. I liked it is all I can say right now... Music is very subtle. I was impressed over all.

-Wow, I loved every minute of this besides the fire alarm. Classic sleezefest and overall great, trashy time at the movies. The gore was awesome and first time I've ever found Argento to be punchy. There's a stinger along the lines of the Exorcist 3 hospital scene.
I've never gone into an Argento flick looking for great dialogue. But felt a lot of the goofy stuff he was totally in on and winking. Think there was a lot more *beep* with the audience than a lot of people were aware of.

"My initial thoughts are overall very positive, and I'll keep this spoiler free. As Argento's later work goes, I would say this film is Argento's best since at least The Stendhal Syndrome, and probably since Opera. In The Third Mother, Argento really seems bent on pushing the envelope on gore, and generally accepted good taste...to the joy of legions of gore hounds. The end result is a very fun film; however, this film is a far cry from the other two films in the "Three Mothers Trilogy" and fails to live up to the standard Argento set with his earlier work.
There is a lot to like about The Third Mother. Argento, at a higher level than I have seen from him in the past, really ratchets up the sleeze in this film. There are moments of random nudity and sexuality that feel as if they are yanked straight from the great euro-trash films of the seventies. At times, the film resembles a post-modern riff on Sergio Martino with a dash of Jess Franco. For Argento, this really felt like new territory as, at least in terms of sexuality, I have always felt that he was much more conservative than many of his seventies counterparts. Not so with The Third Mother.
The gore, and brutality behind that gore (especially aimed at women), is glorious. I cannot rave enough about that gore. One scene in particular involving a jaw and some intestines is simply brilliant. I squirmed and a smile covered every inch of my face. One of my favorite kills in any film, ever. For that alone, this film was something special for me, and thankfully, Argento is not finished. He throws gory buckets of blood and guts around throughout the film, much of it of a very taboo nature. No one is off limits in this film. I got the feeling that Argento was ready and willing to do anything, and that was thrilling. It's been awhile since I've felt that in a theater.
The acting in this film, led by Asia Argento, is also fine, especially for an Argento film. I had heard the dialogue in The Third Mother was a bit rough, and the dubbing rougher, but that's simply not true. Both are as good as, if not better than, most Argento films. The story is fairly nonexistent, but again, for a "Three Mothers" film, that's pretty par for the course. No harm, no foul. The dialogue, dubbing, and story (or lack thereof) take absolutely nothing away from this film.
So while my enthusiasm for this film is very high, I do feel the need to point out some things I did not like about the film. Missing from the film was much of the wonder that is so present in Suspiria and Inferno. The Third Mother, like it's predecessors, is a film set in a supernatural world. But I never felt that otherworldliness that is so blanketed over the first two films of this trilogy. No moment where Suzy Banyon is frozen, walking down the hall in Suspiria...no moment where a demon (or Satan himself?) chases a girl from a library. There are of course nods to the supernatural, but it feels forced...disingenuous even.
Also missing is some of the grand camera work that really separates Argento's early work from many of his contemporaries. Nothing like the plaza sequences from Suspiria or Profondo Rosso. No rooftop take like in Tenebre. No slow-mo sequences like in Phenomena. Early in this film, there are some very cool uses of the camera, but overall, like most of Argento's recent work, the cinematography is nothing exceptional. It's unfair that Argento will always be compared to his past work, but the comparison is also impossible, at least for me, to ignore.
But the biggest bummer about The Third Mother is Claudio Simonetti's score. It's downright depressing. It feels so "movie-of-the-week." Like an old Lone Ranger episode even. There were some cool vocal highlights, but even that seemed a bit tired...like standard "devil movie/witch movie we have to have scary chanting" music. Suspiria and Inferno both have scores that tap into your soul, scores that pull you into Argento's world. This score is completely unimpressive, and at times, dopey. And it really bums me out to write that.
Other might complain about the ending, or lack thereof...but it's Dario Argento we're talking about...he's goddamn brilliant, but also doesn't really know how to end a movie. No problem on that...I actually find it charming. And I really hope I don't come across as overly negative. I don't mean to be. The Third Mother, while not a complete return to form for the great director, is certainly a very worthy and welcome addition to Argento's oeuvre. It's his best work in a long, long time...and I am so happy for that.
Here's hoping that Argento continues to push the envelope, continues challenging taboos, and continues to bring his dark dreams to the screen for a long time to come (but with a better score!)."

Ja očekujem dobar film. Znači, 3 od 5. Možda, u najboljem slučaju 3+, 4-.
Jasno je da je Argento odustao od rekreiranja atmosfere koja je prisutna u prva dva filma, da je, kako to obično biva u trećim delovima, skliznuo u blago (?) parodisanje originalnih postavki.
Ja cenim kad neko napravi zabavan film (pa još pun golotinje i krvoliptanja) ali sam se ipak nadao da će treći deo doneti nešto od one izvorne magije... Eh, moje želje, moji snovi...
budući da od mene SUSPIRIA ima 4+ a INFERNO 4- (nedavno apgrejdovan od nekadašnjih 3+), mislim da je u toj konstelaciji 3+ apsolutni maximum kome se smem nadati.

Mother of Tears: The Third Mother (2007, directed by Dario Argento)
There is a God. Or a Satan. Right now, I don't care which is responsible.
Dario's third Mother film didn't suck.
You have no idea how much I've been dreading seeing this movie. Dario's recent track record, everything post-Opera really, has been, umm, bad. Really bad. At times unwatchably bad. Even at his best Argento's movies have been more about spectacle than coherence, but stuff like Trauma and his version of Phantom couldn't even provide entertaining spectacles. And for him to try and follow up Suspiria and Inferno (my personal favorite Dario film) now, with his directorial powers fading... the possibilities for a soul-scarring disaster loomed large.
Somehow, he pulled it out. Somehow, Mother of Tears did not suck.
Don't get me wrong here, it's the weakest of the three. But it's as least a worthy sequel to movies about ancient witches who live in crazy buildings with rooms full of barbed wire and flooded ballroom basements.
Asia Argento stars as Sarah, an archeology student interning at... c'mon, do you really need the plot? Does it matter? Dario's plots are vehicles to get you to the next spectacle, and there are some doozies. Mother of Tears is a lot gorier than Suspiria or Inferno, for one thing, and even the non-gory deaths are so over-the-top as to be almost glorious. Name another movie where a mommy picks up her tot and for no reason whatsoever tosses him off a bridge into the river (with said tot's little noggin bouncing off the bridge on the way down). Name another movie where a henchman calmly assembles a spear like it's a sniper rifle, then drives it Evil Dead-style up a psychic's nether regions until it comes out her mouth. Name another movie with a crazy killer monkey wandering ar... oh, wait, Dario did that in Phenomena. OK, well, name another movie where the dark-haired lead actress has to swim through a pool of rotting... oh, wait, Phenomena again. Name another horror movie with an Udo Kier cameo... uh, scratch that. OK, well, name another movie where the director gives his own daughter a shower scene... aw, never mind.
If there's one disappointment about Mother of Tears from a Dario fanboy perspective, it's how little the mythology of the first two films figured into the third. In Suspiria and Inferno, the homes of the mothers are as important (if not moreso) to the films as the witches themselves. Here, Mater Lachrymarum's Roman home, the architect's book of secrets and the whole opium dream-inspired back story barely even appear until the final act. There is a nice nod to Suspiria in Asia's character's history, but that's about it. On the other hand, bringing Claudio Simonetti of Goblin fame back to do the music, and casting Dario Niccolodi as Asia's dead mom, score him big nostalgia points.
But Dario, honestly... if you're going to cast a hot Israeli model as Mater L, and have the end of the film set during a convention of lesbian witches who appear to have read too many Clive Barker books, the least you can do is give them a solid half hour of witchy, lesbian, Barker-ish on-screen mayhem before sending them on their way.
At least think about it for the DVD, OK?

Well the Toronto International Film Fest is among us again and that means you are gonna be flooded with reviews for all the sweet flicks being screened. So lemme start yal off with a quick review for Dario Argento's "The Mother Of Tears"
The final chapter of Argento's "Mothers Trilogy" is by far the best. Susperia was prety cool, a tad over rated though. I'm a casual fan of Argento's I havn't really seen enough of his stuff but from what I have seen his new flick is way better than his old stuff.
The same basic Argento set up of random person being thrown into some sort of mystery and finding their way through it til they meet up at the end with the main baddy and shit goes down. Nothing really new plot wise in this one but as most of Argento's work the plot isnt really what we goto see it for. What the real draw is is the weird visuals, interesting subject matter and GORE GORE GORE, and this one has gore-a-plenty. The opening murder scene is probably one of the most brutal I have ever seen. Throught the whole movie we are treated to some insane scenes of torture and brutality which Argento is so good at doing. It's not senseless gore for the sake of it though, it really does fit the tone of the movie and really hightenes the feeling of the movie. And holy shit, Argento just loves killing kids these days, there are more than one extremely brutual scenes involving very small children. One scene involving a new born baby no less, this one really shocked me as it comes out of nowhere.
And the monkey... that lil fucker... I wanted to kick him in the teeth the whole movie!
FUCKING FIRE ALARMS! It went off for a solid 5 minutes during an important and quite part of the movie. At least the film didn't burn up like at Borat last year.
Udo Kier is awesome... that is all.
Asia Argento although drop dead sexy, is seriously one of the worst actress' out there. Although I think it might have to do with the way Argento directs actors in English. The lines almost feel as if they are delivered phoenetically, just emphases on the wrong word and stuff like that.
Argento was there tonight for the WORLD PREMIER of his new movie, daughter Asia in tow. It was also his birthday and we all sang him the birthday song (never thought I would get a chance to sing that song to a Horror legend!) The crowd seemed to really dig the movie, yelping at the right parts and dead silent when the tension was thick (a few bad apples laughing for now aparent reason at certain moments was prety annoying though). The movie was followed up by a brief but funny Q+A, that Italian can get off on a rant sometimes which can get prety hilarious, him talking about the monkey was hilarious. "I loved that monkey, when he died I cried..."
Anyways I'm gonna keep it brief 'cause I gotta wake up for work in about 3 hours.
It's gonna be a long 10 days filled with tons of sweet flicks, I'll keep you guys posted on all the cool shit that's going down.

Jako je mudo taj Miki od Kupinova. Sad je još on našao da priča o Argentu i pogani ga svojim nepismenim ustima.

The new work of Italian horror specialist Dario Argento, Mother of Tears forms a trilogy of the two macabre, hyper stylized works that made his international reputation: Suspiria (1977) and Inferno (1980). The time away from the material has certainly not dulled the director's senses or brought about any new reflection. As a piece of narrative, however, the movie is virtually incomprehensible.
Mother of Tears works most effectively as an associative succession of startling imagery, its overtly sexual nature bound to cause equal amounts of discomfort and dread in the suggestible. By casting his daughter Asia Argento in the lead role, as a young art restorer trying to untangle her mysterious family history and comprehend her own unnatural abilities, Dario Argento intensifies the personal, almost autobiographical aspects of the three films. Asia is a rapturous, extraordinary presence who concentrates a work that lacks narrative cohesion.
Opening the Midnight Madness program at Toronto, the movie, also known as The Third Mother, is likely to play to a young and aggressive male crowd by playing both to the esoteric and the grindhouse. The market for hyper violent horror movies founded in forms of sexual menace (Hostel 2, Captivity) has been highly restrictive, even disappointing of late. The movie's best returns are likely to be found in DVD and ancillary markets. The two Argentos are a more commercially potent draw in Europe than America.
Dramatically the anti-naturalistic language yields to sometimes highly uncomfortable comedy; it also sustains the movie's strange sense of dislocation and disorientation. Argento and his cinematographer Frederic Fasano use the architecture and landscapes of Rome to produce some very strange and unsettling imagery.
The discovery of a 19th century urn contained within a coffin at construction site near a Vieterbo cemetery awakens the annihilating, terrifying Mater Lacrimarum, the third Mother (Atias), a terrifying black witch. Her emergence unleashes an apocalyptic rage of social breakdown, mass suicides, mothers killing their children and uncontrollably vicious street violence.
Sarah Mandy (Asia Argento) is an art restorer whose lover, Michael (James), is the curator of the Museum of Ancient Art of Rome. From the moment she witnesses the grisly, ritualistic sacrifice of her colleague, Sarah realizes something is terribly wrong. She is also trying to discern the unexplainable occurring around her, the mysterious voices that protect her and help her unlock her own hidden powers.
As Sarah comes to realize the full extent of her identity and her special connection to the Third Mother, Dario Argento rapidly expands the body count. The violence is twisted, gruesome and confrontational. The result, depending on your appreciation of the material, is either avant-garde or very sloppy.
More problematically, much of the imagery has an unmistakable sexual metaphor, particularly the recurring use of deviously phallic objects to penetrate or violate the almost exclusively female victims. Other than Asia Argento, the other performers are deliberately crude and amateurish, often resulting in a work that feels more ludicrous than inspired. The blunt style, sometimes something of an assault, features all manner of incident and flamboyant characterization, including a passel of contemporary witches who resemble the Spice Girls on crack.
Dario Argento assaults most manner of film language, eschewing exposition or transitions. The visual style is influenced by graphic art (ink black panels that reveal the backstory) and 19th century painting. Argento lets loose with ear-splitting aural effects, a particularly malevolent monkey and The visual style is very flamboyant, the subjective camera movement marking the darkest, surreal impulses.

Na netu se gomilaju prikazi - iznenađujuće veliki broj je pozitivan. Doduše, jasno je da TREĆA MAJKA više gubi nego što dobija činjenicom da je finalni deo trilogije. Po tonu i izgledu film se toliko razlikuje od prethodna dva da bi bilo bolje da se posmatra kao zasebna zverka.

Dario Argento's Mother of Tears is far more gross on the face of it (and the ass of it and the intestines of it and the brain of it, etc) than Eli Roth's Hostel or Hostel 2. Like Hostel 2, there is naked woman on naked woman violence, there is blood everywhere, and there is cruelty aplenty.
So why did I enjoy Mother of Tears so much while I was so deeply offended by H2 Doh?
Walking out of the theater here in Toronto, the wind suddenly got so intense that it seemed as though it was planned by Argento... the second fall of Toronto to match the second fall of Rome. Skirts were a-flyin', though no one took a spear and used it to rip off anyone's blouse. (No one in ArgentoVille ever wears a bra, so no need for detailed spearing.) We did learn in Argento's film, however, that the darkest evil possible on the planet owns a set of implants. :!: Perhaps it was not intended. Just the day before, in The Orphanage, the actress playing the mother who had not given birth or nursed a child also had enhancements, which seemed almost like story subtext. Maybe it was.
But I digress...
Just as opening credits were rolling, a young woman decided to sit in the row on which I was at the end. I stood, she moved to the center of the row. The body of the film started and in the first scene, a woman is strangled with her own intestines. The young woman was up and out before the last pint of blood gurgled out of the victim's mouth.
That is the kind of film it is. Of course Asia Argento, the director's daughter, is wearing a white silk shirt that shows off the details of her breasts... while she has a shirt on. (A completely gratuitous shower sequence with her comes close to Dressed To Kill quality.) Of course the two pretty girls go all out lesbian before the slicing begins. Of course a variety of throats are deeply slashed. Of course there will be a screaming monkey that leads the parade of murdering supernatural maniacs. Of course there will be parts falling out of body cavities and heads being split by axes over and over again. Of course the only woman who doesn't end up naked or splattered is Dario's ex, Asia's mom, and a Bava girl before pre-Argento, Daria Nicolodi', playing... Asia's mom.
This is a movie where a guy has an eyeball removal tool for no particular reason. This is a movie where the wise old priest has the tools of a murderer, just in case. This is a movie where Udo Kier gets a knowing laugh from the audience as soon as he hits the screen.
It is an absolute B-asterpiece. :cry:
So why isn't it pushing my buttons? Because you can feel the feelings of the man sitting in the director's chair. And while there is a real cruel streak, towards both sexes, as in Eli Roth, you get the distinct feeling that while he is raising the stakes endlessly, Dario Argento is just having a nasty good time. There is something deeply perverse about a man who strips his daughter naked and has the camera linger on her body parts. But unlike Roth, you get the feeling he loves that body that came of his genes. And with Roth, you just get the feeling he, like a frat boy, wants to have sex with the body and then leave it on the side of the road to fend for itself.
It's love – creepy love – versus hate. And that's why I imagine that this film, which some would classify as horror porn, could do better and live longer in the imagination than Hostel 2. Because it's not horror porn. It's sexual. And it's horrible. But it's a gorefest, a splatterfest, a drive-thru autopsy of a movie. But it feels like good clean fun... I guess like Animal House's sexual side felt naughty and amusing and not like a movie full of date rape.
Movies tell you their intent. And as intentionally corroded as this film is, it feels like it intents to take us on a journey of big, broad, passionate, insane, thrilling grotesqueries. And it does. And it is fun. And it is horrible. Never has so much blood being lost by so many been so much fun to watch.
Go figure.

Na netu se pojavio La terza madre torrent, ali je, po svemu sudeći, lažnjak. Doduše, izgleda da fajl ipak sadrži nekoliko dužih scena iz filma - sve sasvim pristojnog kvaliteta u pogledu transfera - tako da verovatno vredi skinuti. Ionako je za dž. Kada skinem fajl, obavestiću vas kako stoje stvari - a možda me neko i pretekne.
Inače, glavni argentofil, Alan Jones, se oglasio povodom premijere Treće majke.

Hi Nick, Back from Rome and the 'unofficial' LA TERZA MADRE premiere which took place 10.45 pm on Halloween, October 31, at the Adriano cinema in the Piazza Cavour. It was star Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni who reminded me that we were all at the same place 20 years before for the OPERA premiere. Tempus fugit and all that! The performance was more like a cast and crew screening with everyone in attendance - Dario, Asia, Claudio Argento, Coralina, writers Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, Sergio Stivaletti, dialogue coach Lynn Swanson, demon Robert Donati and Claudio Simonetti's sister Simona (credited as co-writer, along with director of photography Frederic Fasano, on the Italian poster with Dario, Jace and Adam for quota purposes).
Just before the film began, Dario and Asia introduced with Asia asking everyone who had seen SUSPIRIA and INFERNO. No shock the whole audience raised hands. She then told a story from the Florence premiere the previous night. She and Dario were eating in a restaurant as the film screened. Suddenly someone tapped on the restaurant window and shouted it was the most disgusting film they'd ever seen. The best review they could have she said. Coralina was then introduced to the audience and all three took their seats as the film started. Incidentally, the interval in the 14-rated Italian version comes during the Udo Kier (exorcist Padre Joannes) episode.
Getting the widest Italian release an Argento film has had in decades - 313 prints - All Souls Day was chosen because it is an important holiday date with most people taking the four day weekend time off from work and going to the cinema. The black and red poster depicting Asia's shocked face was everywhere - on billboards, buses, T-shirts and in a major newspaper campaign. I didn't see any fotobusteri on the streets. They are apparently very rare and I only managed to get one set myself. They feature Asia with a photo of Daria and herself as a baby (one of the best examples of how autobiographical the film is in many personal respects); a portrait of Philippe Leroy (Gugliemo De Witt); Asia in the pit of body parts (so PHENOMENA!) and a sparsely populated climactic witch ritual featuring the Mother of Tears (Moran Attias).
As to the film itself, well, it's not the conclusion to the SUSPIRIA and INFERNO trilogy any of us wanted to see. You know the story by now. The discovery of an ancient urn near a Viterbo cemetery awakens the cruel Mater Lacrimarum whose emergence unleashes apocalyptic social breakdown and mass murder in Rome. Art restorer Sarah Mandy can vanquish the evil nemesis if she listens to the guiding spirit of her mother and unlock her own hidden supernatural powers.
While it's easy to criticise LA TERZA MADRE (occasionally different to the US MOTHER OF TEARS version) for what it isn't rather than what it actually is - a gory, campy supernatural romp - the main problem with the film is simple. The layers of ethereal artifice given by lush cinematography and arch style to the prior two classic films lent their fractured stories a further atmosphere of palpable fever dream unreality. Stripped of that, and saddled with Fasano's dull realism (his DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK photography was superior), the film's equally episodic narrative comes off as contrived, crude and kitsch. Why on earth didn't Argento use again the vivid colour palettes that made SUSPIRIA and INFERNO so fabulous to look at? He had the chance in Jace and Adam's jewel-bleeding concept, but axed it as too fairytale instead of embracing its rich atmospheric possibilities.
I don't intend to dwell on the faults of the film here. I'll let others on this site pass judgment on the Toyah reject witches, the lack of scope in the Rome in violent meltdown scenes, the usual dodgy special effects and the final CGI shot that turns everything into a depressing bad joke. But to those who have a problem with the way the third mother is despatched remarkably easily, it's important to point out such a rapid demise also happens in INFERNO. The chain of gore set pieces (phallic torture instruments, cannibalism, baby killing, satanic weird sex) delivers blunt thrills, yet nothing shocks more than the money shot of a demon suddenly appearing by Sarah's bedside.
What I like best about the movie? The autobiographical details woven into the scattershot time-lined story (the real mother/daughter Daria/Asia relationship is poignantly used), the train murder of the Japanese witch and lesbian white witch Valeria Cavalli giving the best performance teaching Sarah how to conjure up her mother's ghost with an enchanted powder puff. Then there's Claudio Simonetti's glorious music. Just as his group Goblin boosted SUSPIRIA, solo his chanting choral anthems give the opening an amazing power of thrilling expectancy and lift the clunky Hammer-type Black Mass ending.
Claudio Argento said it best at the premiere performance. He told me, "For the general public it's a good solid movie, for Dario's fans I'm not so sure". Now it's all eyes on the Italian box-office. How well LA TERZA MADRE does financially will determine exactly what his next project will be.

To sto sam skinuo je nekoliko povezanih scena koje idu u repeticiju u duzini trajanja celog filma. Kvalitet slike je odlican, tako da verujem da ce se vrlo uskoro pojaviti i ceo film. Ako ne zaboravimo i onih dvadesetak minuta koji su procurili pre par meseci, moze se reci da imamo skoro pola sata Terzine majke.
E da, ma momente se vidi par katastrofalnih CGI efekata i suvise balonasto-gumenasti lesevi koji ne tonu.

Jednostavno, to se desava!
Film se relativno dobro otvorio Italiji debitovavši na četvrtom mestu prošle nedelje, da bi ovog vikenda skliznuo na deveto mesto - sa ukupnom zaradom od 2,762,558 $.
Realno je očekivati da do kraja bioskopske distribucije na matičnom tržištu zaradi oko 4 miliona dolara.

Moram priznati da iako sam veliki Argentov fan, nisam naročito iščekivao ovaj film pošto su mi SUSPIRIA i INFERNO kao usmerenje u njegovoj karijeri bili najmanje zanimljivi i svakako nisu razlog zašto sam njegov fan. Ako tome dodamo da njegovih nekoliko najnovijih filmova nije bilo na niovu, strepnja mi je na svaki način bila veća od nade.
Film smo gledali na odličnoj kopiji bez titlova. Međutim, pošto sam film gledao u društvu, a imajući takođe u vidu relativnu razanatljivost italijanskog jezika, i u krajnjoj liniji mumbo-jumbo karakter cele priče, mislim da sam film apsolutno uspeo da shvatim i savladam i bez titlova. Naravno, pogledaću ga još jednom i sa titlovima.
U svakom slučaju, film nije bio dosadan pošto nudi dosta događaja, likova i lokacija i vrlo je šaren. Čini mi se da LA TERZA MADRE nudi mnogo više događaja od ranijih MADRE filmova, i da je svakako najraskošniji u tom smislu.
Razlika je međutim u tome što u ovom filmu nema prepoznatljivog Argentovog rediteljskog rukopisa. Sav onaj gravity, sva ona uverljivost kojima je ranije uspevao da prikaže čak i najbizarnije oniričke momente, sa kojom je iracionalno uspevaop da učini dramskim, u ovom filmu ne postoji. Ovo je film bez suspensea pošto je glavna junakinja koju igra Asia Argento apsolutno nadmoćna u odnosu na problem sa kojim se suočava, apsolutno je superiorna u odnosu na karikaturalne i tragikomične negativce, ali izuzev superiornosti karaktera nema ni Argentove skolnosti ka izgradnji pukog hitchcockovskog suspensea unutar set-pieceova. U ovom filmu događaji nisu povod za set-piece. Iako ima maštovitih smrti, one su date uglavnom informativno bez meračenja čime se dodatno podvlači dramaturško-glumačka ispraznost pretnje kojom se film bavi.
Štaviše, mislim da se u LA TERZA MADRE možda i najbolje vidi koliko je sama Argentova inscenacija presudna za njegove filmove, pošto je ovo film koji u sebi nosi paradoks da je u Argentovom opusu ostvarenje sa najvećim brojem događaja a deluje najpraznije do sada.
No, unutar svega toga, ima lepih detalja, ima lepog gorea, gde je meni svakako hit irreversibilično ubistvo veštice u vozu (uz citiranje genijalne sekvence iz NON HO SONNO), ima finih argentovskih curio situacija kao što je poseta starom okultisti gde me je podsetio na Pleasenceov vibe iz PHENOMENAe, i sl.
Stoga, LA TERZA MADRE više liči na neki argentovski pastiš nego na real deal, pošto od njegovog ličnog prisustva ostaje samo nekakav eho ali njegovog pravog glasa ovde nema.
Pa ipak, uspeo je da kroz inflaciju događaja zabašuri svoju senilnost što je dosta bitno posle nepodnošljivog IL CARTAIOa.

La terza madre je Argentova THE BEST OF kompilacija, digest verzija njegovog kompletnog opusa. Maestro neprekidno poseže za svojim prethodnim filmovima, praveći sam sebi omaže.
Početne scene u muzeju evociraju lokalitete u Stendalovom sindromu.
Koralinina smrt je direktna prerada slične scene u Operi.
Majmunče evocira Fenomenu, naravno.
Scena u vozu - Nonhosonno.
Lik Darije Nikoldi - i po imenu, i po odeći, posveta Elizi iz Opere.
Pojedeno dete - Dženifer.
Azijino lutanje po kući Treće majke - Tajna napuštne kuće.
Ima toga još, i na nivou muzike i fotografije, sve vrvi od Darijevih posveta samom sebi, ali problem je što sve deluje kao sirotinjska verzija ranijih uspeha. Ozbiljan ton ranija dva dela trilogije je netragom nestao, tako da film ni vizuelno (kolorit je sasvim sveden, pucalo se na prirodan izgled a la Kartaš) ni sadržinski ne pripada univezumu Suspirije i Inferna.
Treća majka je svakako krajnje razočaravajuća završnica trilogije, ali posmatrana odvojeno može da pruži dobru, neobaveznu zabavu. Film je prepun likova i lokacija, i to mu ide u prilog. Nije dosadan, brzo se gleda, proleti... Ima puno krvoliptanja, scene nasilja su ekstremne, ali prave napetosti nema ni u tragovima. Čini se da je režiser želeo da se dobro zabavi, da snimi parodiju, a ne ozbiljan film. Polsednja scena predstavlja posebno jak šamar onima koji su svet prethodna 2 filma shvatili ozbiljno.
Ne mogu da verujem sta sam pogledao. Film je DNO DNA.

ovo je ne samo nedostojan nastavak i sramotna konkluzija (?) trilogije, nego i slab film po sebi.
potpuno misguided još na nivou koncepta: umesto jedne lokacije kao fokusa zla, ovde se htelo nešto pompeznije i epskije – što, po sebi, ne bi bilo loše da se još umelo i izvesti. a nije.
arđentova koncepcija zla je krajnje nemaštovita i banalna: krvoločna ubistva (sa neujednačenim efektima maske), (loše inscenirano) nasilje na ulicama, neuljudno ponašanje (tragikomično-grotesknih) euro-trash 'veštica' i – homosexualnost (ovde lezbejstvo), koja se, u najgoroj tradiciji najreakcionarnijih Z-filmova 'kažnjava' obaveznim probadanjem međunožja (vidi TT SINDROM, itd.).
prelazak na 'realizam' je sasvim predvidiva greška, i odsustvo operetskog kolorita i stilizacije ovaj film svodi na (znatno banalniji) nivo neke produžene epizode serijala MASTERS OF HORROR. mereno standardima te serije, ovo bi bila jedna od najboljih epizoda. avaj, gledano kao film, ovo je traljavo. ubistva su u arđentovim DOBRIM filmovima uvek bila pay-off u složeno koncipiranim set-pisovima. ovde nema saspensa, nema stila, nema predigre – nego se odmah ide na banalno pornografsko trpanje! po potonjem se ovaj film opasno približava poznom, dementnom fulčiju, a potpuno udaljava od svega onoga što je činilo srž vintage arđenta, uključujući i njegov fetišizam. i ritam i 'zaplet' su amerikanizovani baš kao i simonetijeva jezivo konvencionalna i nenadahnuta muzika, i od fetiša je ostala samo opsesija matorog perverta oblinama svoje ćerke. auto-referencijalnost je samo još jedan pokazatelj gubitka kompasa i odsustva pravog nadahnuća: prosto vidim deda-arđenta kako napokon popušta pred insistiranjem fanova i kako, polaskan idolatrijom ovih imbecilnih huperovih scenarista, pristaje da isporuči ono kako arđento zamišlja da izgleda 'moderan' i 'hip' film za današnju omladinu. udaljivši se od svoje ionako svedene i ograničene poetike, arđento je zašao na teritoriju koju niti dovoljno poznaje niti se u njoj adekvatno snalazi, pa je stoga rezultat jedan polovičan filmić koji je naizmenično sladak i kiseo.
za razliku od dimba, meni su ezoterični momenti u 'mothers' trilogiji uvek bili vrlo intrigantni, i u III delu zapažam maltene overkill toga: ipak, treba sačekati titlovanu verziju i bar još jedno gledanje da bih se uverio da li je i koliko bar na tom polju argento ostao dosledan. u svakom slučaju, zapazio sam neke simbole, ilustracije i aluzije koji nisu puko klišetizirano B-movie posezanje za dime-store okultizmom...
pošto sam gledanju pristupio očekujući ono najgore, možda sam baš zbog toga bio spremniji da mu progledam kroz prste za ono gore nabrojano, plus za sasvim promašene i nepotrebne vizuelne efekte, a naročito one vezane za PROTRAĆENU dariju nikolodi (u jednom času sam pomislio da je argento snimio ovako bezvezan film da bi se NJOJ osvetio), za zbrzanu i tupavu završnicu (OK, što jes-jes, po tome nije MNOGO gora od one u INFERNU) itd. i da se radujem svemu što nije bilo baš trulo i crvljivo gnjilo.
zato u poslednji čas odlučih da budem milosrdan i prvobitnu ocenu od 2+ ipak preobrazim u 3-

Odgledao sam novog Argenta zahvaljujucu Kuncu koji je napravio srpski prevod :!: vrlo mi se dopao mnogo je daleko bolji od vecina njegovih filmova,drzim Argentu palceve da nastavlja snimati makar cetvrte ili pete majke sto god... :evil:

Mada, nije bilo baš lako napraviti valjane titlove pošto postojeća engleska osnova nije bila najbolja (nekoliko rečenica nije uopšte prevedeno + neke stvari nisu prevedene kako treba), tako da sam morao da se koristim svojim skromnim znajem italijanskog, simultano gledam film i dorađujem titl. Ttilovi su kompatibilni sa italo DVDrip verzijom koja, za sada, jedina i može da se pronađe na netu. Ne znam da li je dostupna verzija cutovana ili ne, ali je prilično krvava, tako da verujem da neke veće intervencije nisu rađene - if any.
Za oko mesec dana u Italiji izlazi zvanični DVD, ali ne znam da li je trenutno dostupni divx ripovan sa njega. Verovatno jeste.
DVD premijera u SAD još nije zakazana, a detalji o ovom izdanju nisu poznati.

ova jednorečenična apsolutistička otpisivanja i bespogovorne tvrdnje ničim obrazložene nemaju ama baš nikakvu vrednost niti težinu.
dakle, TI preteruješ, jer u odnosu na beslovesnog i dosadnog kartaša, ovo je barem prilično zabavno (while still retarded).
Na horrorflixu upravo izašlo za engleski titlovima. Iako meni uopće nije smetalo gledati na talijanskom. Pa Argento je talijan, kao i većina glumaca.
La terza madre jeste veliko razočarenje - ako se - kao što i treba - posmatra kao završni deo Arđentove trilogije. S druge strane, imho, film poseduje veliki entertainment value, čemu se mora skinuti kapa.
Ja sam se dogovrio s Miloshem da za EMITOR napišem jedan tekst o ovom filmu, tako da Forumu, bar za sada, neću ulaziti u detaljniju analizu, ali moj savet vam je da film pogledate (bar) dva puta. Na drugo gledanje, kada već znate šta da očekujete, film prilično dobija na kvalitetu. Naravno, Treća majka nije ni prineti prvim poglavljima trilogije, ali poseduje tongue-in-cheek pristup koji neki ljudi umeju da cene.
E, sada, što je ključno pitanje, ne znam da li je Argento namerno skliznuo u parodiju. Voleo bih da verujem da je bio svestan šta radi, ali mi smo, u svakom slučaju, nenadano, dobili jednu pulp poslasticu i najbolji maestrov film od Stendalovog sindroma na ovamo.
Francuski Libération je nedavno objavio intervju sa Arđentom. Prevod nije najbolji (Babel Fish did the job), ali poslužiće kao ilustracija psihičkog stanja "italijanskog Hičkoka".
Q: Is Suspiria really, according to you, the top of your career?
A: With force to intend it to me to say, I end up believing that it is perhaps true. But I like before all the films most difficult to realize. Suspiria in fact part. During filming, my father died, one of the actors had a car accident and we remained blocked for two months. In film, it was a question of opera Macbeth, of which all the music lovers in Italy say that he carries misfortune. Even with projection, there was an avalanche of incidents. While the re-establishment of the actor was awaited, one advised me to change opera, to take Traviata, as that I did not risk anything.
Q: Anything... These experiments almost diverted you cinema...
A: That started in me a terrible depression. I left for a voyage to the Far East because I needed to lose me. To be all alone, without anybody with whom to speak, so that the truth invades me. Later, I remained a good moment in Los Angeles. Over there, I met an old friend in the street, Alan Jones, a critic of cinema, which went up me the moral one... and almost saved the life.
Q: You form part of these scenario writers whose certain films are adulated. How do you live it?
A: It is a feeling difficult to define. In a certain manner, the fans seized the power of my films. I always did them for me, but as soon as they are finished, I smell myself some exproprié. This is why, for example, I do not have only one DVD of my films at the house. Even not of article, nothing, if not of the memories. If friends visit me and ask me to see one of my films, I send them to the videoclub. I am a kind of hostage: when I meet these fans, or even more generally the public, I realize that they want only of the things that they know already, always the same history. Q: Do you feel condemned to always remaking same film?
A: Especially not. When the film is finished and that it is between the hands of the public, I am already on other thing. In connection with my trilogy, I made second film three years after the first, and when there was some discussion about turning the third, I said no. I thought that it was necessary to wait. During this time, I went to America, I signed two films with my daughter Asia, plus two episodes of Masters of Horror. Then, when nobody any more thought of asking me where was this third part, then I started working on La Terza Madre.
Q: But was the film already written twenty-five years ago?
A: Yes, mainly. There was especially same to tell a history in extreme cases of the impossible one. Where reality is deeper, as at Edgar Allan Poe. Poe did not believe in the phantoms, but it thought that they were interesting, that they said things on reality. Me, I do not believe in the witches, because I never met some. But it is a topic which makes it possible to make a great jump in the unknown, in the irrational one. More still today than twenty-five years ago, reality was made ugly, then it is necessary to leave.
Q: Between Suspiria and Terza Madre, what changed in the cinema?
A: People who finance it, especially in the United States, are not any more the impassioned producers whom I knew. The majority even hate the cinema. But as they want all to control, they put their nose absolutely everywhere. For example, I am one of rare to make film in the order where it will be assembled. That, Americans, that their fact fear, just for questions of money. On Masters of Horror, it was necessary that the assembler intervenes by saying that this way of working was appropriate to him, to calm the spirits. After, other directors came on turning to copy me. I tell that to say to you that, today, the cinema is too expensive. That everyone seeks how to gain much money as quickly as possible. And to do what? Spider-Man 3 or Die Hard 4? These films are nothing.
Q: Your projects?
A: I have things in the course of writing. But since I finished the trilogy, I a little only smell myself, abandoned. That is there, all that I wanted to do, I carried it out. For the moment, I am in lack of whim.

Argento je slagao kada je rekao da će preuzeti paletu koji je koristio u Susinfernu. Navodno, Treća majka je trebalo da počne u realističnom ključu, a onda da se sve više i više pojavljuju Argentove
boje. To je, ako se izuzme par kadrova, izostalo. Šteta, ali, kad bolje razmislim, možda je i bolje.
Treća majka se strukturalno toliko razlikuje od Susinferna, da isti vizelni koncept ne bi pasovao.
Famed Italian horror director Dario Argento ("Suspiria," "Inferno") will make his first English-language effort entitled "Giallo" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The slasher film will tell the story of a serial murderer (Vincent Gallo) with a taste for attractive women, who is being chased by a solitary detective (Ray Liotta). Argento's daughter Asia also stars.
Sean Keller and Jim Agnew ("Damned") penned the script. Shooting will begin next month in Turin.

Zaboravio bih ja na boje da postoji makar jedna stvarno napeta scena u filmu. Kao da je ovu Trecu majku pravio samo da bi skinuo teret sa vrata i usput se nasmejao tvrdokornim fanovima.
