Sjajne minijature podlozne multipnom gledanju!

kada sam na ovom forumu u više navrata stenlija nazvao 'genijem' i 'najboljim živim horor rediteljem', niko na to nije reagovao.

samo val tišine.

u toj tišini, subliminalno, između redova, moglo se čuti: 'eh, baš ga pretera!' i 'genije? sa samo dva igrana filma?' i 'Ghoule, can you be more specific?'

At any given moment I try to keep as many balls in the air as I possibly can, trying to cover all the bases so to speak.
As of this posting the slate includes:-
'THE BONES OF THE EARTH' - a medium to high budget British action thriller. The script, written in collaboration with the late, great Donald Cammell, is probably the best material I have ever produced as a screenwriter. Very happy with this one but don't tell anyone otherwise they'll never let me do it. Cast members come and go and it seems to get announced at Cannes every year but the budget and subject matter ( Afghanistan and the war on terror ) holds it back.

'VIY'- a low budget British Yugo-Vampire movie. Originally concieved as a collaboration with 'Kelly's Heroes' scribe Troy Kennedy Martin. It has been in development with the British Film Council for close to a decade now without seeing daylight.

'HARDWARE ll GROUND 0'- Medium budget American sci-fi horror sequel (under its pre 9-11 working title ) The one I'd be remembered for if only it existed. The project has been in development for 17 years but refuses to die because quite frankly it still fuckin' rocks! Even now! Bigger, nastier, louder and somehow more personal than the original. The Mark 13 cyborg goes over the counter. Jill, Shades and the Nomad return from the first installment along with new characters such as J.C, a messianic luddite messiah, high on radioactive peyote buttons and leader of the equally crazed 'destructuralist' movement intent on monkeywrenching the technosphere back to the dark ages, his followers Melchizidek and Moon Rabbit , Mark 13 software designer and all round decent Californian family man and cat lover Matt Barlowe, Sub Commandant Javier Davalos ( a McDonalds manager from San Antonio who believes he is channelling the spirit of Zapata ) Juan Cordero, his bewildered Mescalero Appache sidekick and the film's long suffering lead, weapons inspector Lyle Maddox whose attempts to track down three missing warheads mislaid at the time of the cold war go tragically awry. Hence the working title. The droid's are waterproof and equipped with microwave weapons as well as the usual cutting tools and household paraphenalia. Everyone dies. Angry Bob gets the last laugh..

'WASTELANDER'- low budget American horror thriller - Dust Devil does Arizona. This time with better songs. ( "One day it's gonna be MY voice you'll be hearin' on that radio!" )

'THE SEA OF PERDITION' -low budget Anglo-American sci-fi epic concerning mankind's abortive efforts to terraform the angry red planet. Effectively pitched as 'DESCENT' on Mars but effectively killed off by poor box-office receipts on 'SUNSHINE'.

Dormant projects include global warming epic'IN A SEASON Of SOFT RAINS',

mutant hybrid big cat horror 'STRAY',

amusing Italian eye gouger 'IMAGO MORTIS' ( concerning 'thanatography'- the use of dead people to record images)

feminist plane crash chiller 'DEATH's OTHER KINGDOM',

Voodoo blaxploitation programmer 'STEEL DONKEYS' ( Demons versus Yardies - " Why do they call 'em that ? Steel donkeys ? I never seen 'em but I heard 'em once in my daddie's oum'phor and I tell you, man, they sound like a fuckin' car accident!")

auto-asphyxiation psychodrama 'BREATHPLAY',

two Irish horrors
'STRAIGHT ON 'TIL MORNING' ( Revisionist Peter Pan- paedophilia, child abduction, recovered memories and real life little people )
and
'THE WIZARD OF WICKLOW' ( The 20 th century through the eyes of a deranged vaudevillian who developes miraculous powers after suffering shellshock on the Western Front )

' THE GRINNING GAP' ( Da Vinci Code meets Jorg Buttgereit! Novice monk gets into necrophilia, starts talking to the dead and finds out what really happens when we die. It ain't pleasant )

cave diving drama 'STYX' ( The River that flows through Hell ! )

African biker saga 'PILGRIM' aka 'BLACK RIDER',

revisionist slavery epic 'FORTUNATE SON' ( originally developed as a vehicle for Wesley Snipes only too be deemed a little too grim, too close perhaps to the awful truth )

'THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIRDS', a French pickpocket and an American OSS officer team up to track down a deadly femme fatale in occupied Paris,

'YEAR ZERO' time travellers return to ancient Galilee to find out the terrible truth,

'SANGRAAL-GRAIL OF BLOOD'( my first completed screenplay, a verhoevenesque medieval bodice ripper - features lamias, gay knights, cannibal bishops, impalations, witch burnings, the plague and a really neat arrow through the head setpiece that I still dream about even now. All that before anyone told me there was no point trying to write high fantasy )

Adapted material includes drafts of 'SHADOWLAND' by Peter Straub ( one of my very favourite novels )
'THE DAMNATION GAME' by Clive Barker,
'THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH' by Phillip K.Dick ( one draft only, commissioned by Zoetrope - if only! )
'SOLOMON KANE' by Robert E. Howard ( optioned by Ed Pressman who wanted to set it up with Daniel Day Lewis in the lead - killed off by the Moreau affair )
'FLICKER' by Theodor Roszak ( again optioned by Ed Presman, briefly revived by Terrance Mallick only to be killed again, then badly ripped off by John Carpenter in his pilot segment for 'Masters of Horror' )
'COCAINE NIGHTS' by J.G.Ballard ( one draft only, now mooted as a possible project for Nacho Cerda who is currently looking for a follow-up to 'THE ABANDONED',
' THE GREAT GOD PAN'' by Arthur Machen ( treatment only with Adi Tantimedh )
'SUMMERISLE'- an illegitimate 'Wicker Man" sequel,
a revisionist remake of 'THE WILD GEESE' with Roger Moore, the mind reels! A. modern day mercenary saga, better than it sounds, in the end the House of Commons is infected with a mutant strain of Ebola, the Prime Minister melts, everyone dies, even Roger Moore. ( fed feet first into a shredding machine in a meanspirited twist on the Bond movies- this time no-one rescues him, none of the gadgets work and he does not leap free with a single mighty bound. Asia Argento was in the frame for the female lead, a Palestinian computer expert and a true artist when it comes to new and ever more cunning ways of blowing people to pieces.( How do you make smalltalk or effectively seduce a lady whose only real desire in life is to explode as forcefully as possible ) Predictably this project stayed in limbo despite the support of Mr Moore and the original movie's backers but the script still puts a goofy smile on my face .

Depressed ? Exhausted ? Try being Richard for a week and see how it feels! At least I get to watch these things which is more than can be said for anyone else. We're not talking one line pitches here. These titles exist as full screenplays, usually in several drafts. most of the titles in the first half of that list went to five drafts or more. Some like'Soft Rains', 'Bones' and 'Wastelander' have seen as many as fifteen or twenty major redrafts. After about four or five I stop putting the real figure on the topsheet to avoid discouraging the backers by giving them a sense of just how long some of these things have been about. Some ( 'Soft Rains'' 'Solomon Kane', 'Viy' ) have even been scouted and storyboarded, planned in such detail that like 'Moreau' I can still see and hear them when I close my eyes, still feel the beats and sometimes find myself laughing out loud at their sheer cheek.

And that really is just the tip of the iceberg.

Zombies anyone ? Try 'BLOOD TIES' ( Kids battle diseased parents on remote Scottish island. The ministery of defence are to blame -'Doomwatch goes postal )
or 'LOA' ( Remember Wade Davis and that 'Serpent and the Rainbow' malarchy ? Well what do you think the American pharmaceutical company wanted the zombie potion for in the first place ? )

Dario Argento movies the world will never see? Anyone ever mention 'THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO' written for cable ( Think Jonathan Price for Montressor, Michael Gambon as Fortunato, take one look at the Roman catacombs and weep! ) And talking of tears there's always 'LACHRYMAE', my own take on the Three Mothers mythos, one I still enjoy so much I'm not going to say another word for fear of breaking the code of Omerta or Silentium or whatever you want to call it. ( Okay, it was set in a future Rome and involved global warming, the mother goddess, the rivalry between the corrupt polizei and the equally corrupt carabinieri, the process by which new popes are chosen and... well... blood... so much blood it scares even me ! )

Nunsploitation ? Try 'SCOURGE'- aging space inquisitor Father Clavius and his loyal scribe are dispatched to root out heresy and strange new alien sins on a planet of desperate women!
( People get crucified on wind turbines, the mother superior is eaten by genetically modified locusts and all the space nuns have martial arts ! ) In true Scooby Doo fashion Father Clavius discovers the demonic apparitions and related murders are a fraud designed by the very theocracy he represents in order to stamp out non-comformists and to force the wayward colonists to return to the bosom of the mother church. As in 'Moreau' and 'Perdition' hubris and terraforming play a central role.

Not to mention bio-pics- including a major life of Edgar Allen Poe, developed for several years but dropped for never being the Corman style creepshow people seemed to expect. My research was pretty bang on and integrity prevented me from playing fast and loose with the facts. Instead the script ( written with Stephen Berkoff ) focusses on the social issues that Edgar blithely ignores in his morbid quest for the sublime. ( We're talking pre-civil war Virginia and Mississippi - I mean I love the poetry but who made the paper he wrote it on? Who starched his collar, fixed his drinks and made his ink ? ) Central roles were created for the Allan family's long suffering retainers including the heroic 'Dab', who in real life helped support Edgar after he was cut off by his step father, John Allan, himself a slave trader. In return Edgar never noticed, thanked or even mentioned them but hey, he invented the whodunnit? so who's complaining?

'PROVIDENCE' attempted a similar approach to Lovecraft, focussing on his last few days and lonely gut wrenching demise while still salvaging some small degree of optimism from the cancerous dregs. Again the specters of racism and anti-semitism are invoked and balanced against the authors works, arguing that sometimes we have to tolerate even the very worst in human nature for the sake of what is best in all of us. Sometimes you have to drink a bottle all the way to its dregs to know it's true taste.

Nazism raised its head in 'FLORIANA' ( the true story of a utopian German colony that goes to Hell in the Gallapagos - includes sharks, manhunts, volcanic erruption, a self-proclaimed 'Pirate Queen' contesting the blonde ubermensch for control of the island, mass murder, a Jewish leading lady and a gigantic maneating razorback hog dubbed 'the Satanic Boar'. ( Project dumped in favour of 'moreau',
briefly revived by Angellica Huston, then swiftly dumped again.)

' THE SECRET GLORY' was likewise originally intended as a study for a feature film ( Think 'The English Patient' crossed with 'Kiss me Deadly!')

And then there's television. I don't even want to go there- to give you an idea these files include a full season of an unmade manga franchise based around the Gracie family entitled 'LEGADO' or 'INHERITANCE' depending on the territory;
a sci-fi saga concerning a new generation of Latin martial artists in Brazil circa 2066.
Pilot episode for a supernatural sitcom 'SEVEN DOORS HOTEL' ( think 'The Beyond' crossed with 'Crossroads' and ''Allo 'Allo" by way of 'Twin Peaks') and...well, the list goes on and on..
' S-SQUAD!', 'SUPERSPEED STARS!' and 'THE DEVIL's CHESSBOARD' among them.

The only reason I have given 'VACATION' pole position is because it is the only project I have written in the last many years to have come as close as it has to actual production, not because of any inherent difference in style or quality. It's just so damn cheap and the potential investors are getting so much in return for their dosh it's kinda hard to say 'no' to...

Ja sam HARDVER prvi put gledala pre 17 godina.

Fantasia '13 exclusive: Richard Stanley talks his Lovecraft film "COLOUR OUT OF SPACE"

While attending the current Fantasia festival in Montreal to host the world premiere of his striking documentary L'AUTRE MONDE, filmmaker Richard Stanley also took part in the Frontières market, pitching his H.P. Lovecraft adaptation THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE. Fango got the chance to sit down with the man to get his thoughts and details on the project.

Written by Lovecraft in 1927, the "Colour Out of Space" short story deals with a meteor that crashes to earth in rural Massachusetts and causes mutations and madness among the animal, vegetable and human population. It is one of the eldritch author's most-filmed works, having served as the source for the Boris Karloff-starrer DIE, MONSTER, DIE!, the U.S./Italian co-production THE CURSE (a.k.a. THE FARM, with Lucio Fulci as an associate producer), Ivan Zuccon's COLOUR FROM THE DARK and a 2010 German feature a.k.a. DIE FARBE.

"I did a crash course and went back and saw all of them," Stanley tells Fango. "Out of the bunch, I like DIE FARBE the most. It's set at the end of WWII, is in black and white and takes a very different approach to the material—thankfully, because for a while I was thinking, 'OK, if this is good, I don't need to do the story again.' But it's also not really a horror movie, which is the most unfortunate thing about DIE FARBE. I thought if it had some gore effects—if it had some latex in there and some kind of monster—it would've been worth it, I guess, for the audience to get through the German language and the subtitles and the black-and-white art-house approach. And THE CURSE is just kind of a gloss over the material; it has a nice well, but apart from that there's a lot of stuff missing. We all love DIE, MONSTER, DIE!, but it's hokey as hell now, just like the original DUNWICH HORROR. DUNWICH HORROR desperately needs a decent adaptation too, I think. That's one we're looking at very carefully; I'm so in love with Wilbur Whateley that I would love to see him done properly in a movie."

With his COLOUR, Stanley wants to give Lovecraft the big-screen respect he feels has been lacking in the last several years. "Personally, I've been a little disappointed by the recent Lovecraft movies, and I want to do something that's a return to the spirit of the original stories. I want to make a Lovecraft film that genuinely terrifies and traumatizes the audience and makes people ask questions about the reality we're living in. Lovecraft should still be more dangerous than ever, in a way, rather than something that's quaint and part of the past. It's too easy, I think, to take a slightly campy approach and keep Lovecraft trapped in the '20s and '30s. I would like to see the Great Old Ones back in a much more unfriendly manner.

"One of the things we're going to do," he continues, "is set the film in a universe where the characters are already aware of Lovecraft's work. There are two teenage kids in the family, and one's a WARHAMMER addict and the other's got a copy of the paperback NECRONOMICON. So they're aware of all this material, but of course, it doesn't help—referring to the NECRONOMICON or even carving the sigils into your flesh, as one character does trying to protect themselves, doesn't make any difference. The thing from outer space doesn't have a name and doesn't conform to any of the rules."

Joining Stanley on THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE will be editor Douglas Buck and a few key collaborators from L'AUTRE MONDE and his MOTHER OF TOADS segment from THE THEATRE BIZARRE: screenwriter Scarlett Amaris, composer Simon Boswell and director of photography Karim Hussain. "During L'AUTRE MONDE," the director says, "Karim and I were talking a lot about COLOUR, and how to create the extremely trippy visuals. Another thing that attracts me to COLOUR is the opportunity to make another psychedelic film, but a very, very dark one, and rethink that approach in terms of, 'OK, what haven't we seen before, and how can we make this extremely trippy and disorienting for people?' " He further reveals that COLOUR looks likely to serve as a comeback film for ace makeup FX artist Steve Johnson. "We've talked to him about it," Stanley confirms, "and we need to get him back in the world again. He seemed to have backed away from the industry; I think it was a similar issue to myself, because he also dropped out to France, and felt he didn't need to do anything for some reason."

The occult-suffused region of the south of France where Stanley now resides, and is the subject of L'AUTRE MONDE, may also serve as the shooting site for COLOUR OUT OF SPACE. "It was written for that area," he says, "but it all unfolds on one farm location, so it could be pretty much anywhere. The story is set in backwoods Arkham—well, west of Arkham, Lovecraft says; no one has ever quite figured out where that is." Quebec, he muses, may also be a possibility: "Lovecraft had a deep love for Quebec, and it was one of the only places he ever visited at length. He went on a lot of trips up there from Providence and wrote a very long tour guide about it, TO QUEBEC AND THE STARS, this fat book about the old buildings and architecture there. I often think that Lovecraft's backwoods farmers would work well as Quebecois people just as well as, or probably better than, the usual... 'Colour' gets relocated to the Midwest an awful lot, with your typical sort of dungaree-wearing yokels. So COLOUR could shoot either in Quebec or in France, depending on how it works out with the funding. It's a bit of a movable feast." Frightfest Review: Lost Soul – The Doomed Journey Of Richard Stanley's Island Of Dr Moreau

I'll make you a bet that David Gregory's 'Lost Soul' will be the most terrifying keep-you-awake-at-night movie you'll see this year. Especially if you work in the film business. It's the story of a young director whose passion and imagination seems to know no bounds until he is offered what appears-to-be the perfect assignment, to make the definitive film version of HG Wells' classic 'The Island of Dr. Moreau'. But within weeks he finds himself trapped in a twisted paradise at the bottom of the world, at the mercy of beasts more ruthless and horrifying than anything Wells' eponymous hero could ever have created. 'Lost Soul' is a no-holds-barred masterpiece, a hypnotic descent into madness, barbarity, the assassination of dreams and the almost-extermination of one of the most original and genuinely exciting creative talents horror filmmaking has ever seen.

The young director's name is Richard Stanley and everything David Gregory shows us in 'Lost Soul' is true. Stanley, who had already written and directed the cult favourites 'Hardware' and 'Dust Devil' by the time New Line Cinema offered him the chance to make 'Moreau' from his own script, had only a brief period of pre-production optimism and calm before the ego and narcissistic boorishness of his leading actors Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando quickly destroyed what could have been a truly ground-breaking genre masterpiece. If you think I'm exaggerating, Richard Stanley's original screenplay is available to view at

http://www.everythingisundercontrol.org/nagtloper/write/moreauscript.php (http://www.everythingisundercontrol.org/nagtloper/write/moreauscript.php)

and it's an exciting piece of work, one of the finest examples of modern horror screenwriting you're ever likely to read (yes, I'll admit it, I'm a fan. When Richard Stanley recently returned to filmmaking (he contributed segments to 'The Theatre Bizarre' and 'The Profane Exhibit') it was like all my Christmases came at once. And I've always considered his second film 'Dust Devil' to be an astonishing achievement.)

As is 'Lost Soul'. Richard Stanley, along with other key players and cast members caught up in the 'Dr Moreau' car crash (but not Val Kilmer – what a surprise), recount their nightmare experience direct to camera with honesty, some fascinating anecdotes and an unexpected amount of humour. Time may not have exactly healed Stanley's wounds, but his perspective on events is fascinating and refreshingly bile-free. Wearing his trademark black hat (even indoors) Stanley cuts a charismatic and shamanistic figure, not unlike a character from one of his own screenplays. His retelling of events is peppered with references to real-life witchcraft (when it seemed – very early on – as if he might lose the project, Stanley asked a friend to make a magical intervention) and the story of how he 'went rogue' and then sneaked back on set disguised as one of Moreau's mutant creations is the stuff legends are made of.

But the documentary isn't only about Richard Stanley. We also learn what happened when John Frankenheimer took over directing duties and managed to very quickly alienate his cast and crew. 'Moreau' actors Fairuza Balk and Marco Hofschneider share some particularly engrossing but disturbing stories.

David Gregory, who co-founded 'Blue Underground' in 1997, has directed and produced a multitude of 'behind the scenes' documentaries and DVD extras, directed and co-wrote the horror feature 'Plague Town' in 2008 and is also co-founder of 'Severin Films', an independent production company that is also one of the finest and most dedicated distributors of cult movies in the American and European marketplaces, is obviously as passionate about unravelling the truth behind 'Moreau' as Richard Stanley was passionate about telling HG Wells' story when he pitched the original project to New Line twenty-plus years ago. Gregory's enthusiasm for his subject, and his respect for Stanley as a filmmaker, imbues every frame. He keeps the documentary moving at a fantastic pace but never lapses into superficiality or spares us any of the nastier details. This is obviously the whole damning journey, warts and all. Admirably, he also never intrudes on the film. There are no self-conscious directorial tricks, no clumsy editing, no sense that we are watching anything other than a group of survivors from (reputedly) one of the 'worst films ever made' telling us their war stories as casually and without artifice as if they were sitting across from us at a party. Moreover, the copious and very welcome amount of behind-the-scenes photographs, illustrations and storyboards are inserted so intelligently into the flow of the conversation it often feels as if we are watching a feature film instead of a feature documentary.

Even if I were not a Richard Stanley admirer, I would still consider 'Lost Soul' to be one of the most entertaining, riveting and remarkable documentaries I have ever seen. It is also essential viewing for anyone interested in cinema, whether they're a horror fan or not. Don't miss it. It was a huge privilege to be allowed to watch 'Lost Soul' before its World Premiere and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

VERDICT: ★★★★★

One of the few Brando brainwaves that did not end up on screen was the actor's suggestion that Moreau would wear an elaborate hat throughout the film. In the final scene, this would be removed – revealing him, in a dramatic twist, to have been a dolphin all along.

With changes being made to the script on a daily basis, actually learning it seemed pointless, so Brando had his dialogue read aloud to him line by line via an earpiece during filming. Sometimes the signal would be drowned out by a local police scanner, and Thewlis would later reminisce about Moreau shouting in the middle of a scene: "There's a robbery at Woolworths".
