Pat Robertson links Haiti quake to pact with devil

The U.S. televangelist says Haiti's calamities derive from a purported pact rebellious slaves made in the 18th century to overthrow the French. Robertson's TV show later issues a statement.

Reporting from Washington - Conservative televangelist Rev. Pat Robertson on Wednesday linked the earthquake in Haiti to a "pact with the devil" purportedly entered into by the Haitian people in the late 18th century in a bid to defeat French colonizers.

"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show. "They were under the heel of the French . . . and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'

"True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' " Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

Hours after his comments ignited a firestorm in the news media and online, Robertson's "The 700 Club" TV show issued a statement elaborating on his remarks.

Robertson's comments were based "on the widely discussed 1791 slave rebellion . . . where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed," the statement said.

"Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God's wrath," the statement went on. It added that "Dr. Robertson's compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them."

The Haitian uprising is regarded as one of history's few successful slave revolts.

Robertson, the founder of the Christian Coalition and a 1988 Republican presidential candidate, has a history of making provocative comments, often in the wake of calamity.

He once said former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's incapacitating stroke was divine retribution for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Robertson seemed to link the storm to abortion. About the same time, he called on the U.S. to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Robertson surmised that lack of prayer in public schools and tolerance of abortion and pornography meant that "God Almighty is lifting his protection from us."

Malić ima zanimljiv stav o Haitiju, a sa kojim se potpuno slažem. BTW, nema sile koja bi me naterala da im uplatim centa pomoći (mada relativno često učestvujem u akcijama; poenta pomoći je ne hvalisati se time, te o tome neću u detalje, niti ću bilo kome odgovarati na tu temu).

У уторак, 12. јануара, земљотрес јачине 7 степени Рихтерове скале погодио је Хаити. Уследила су још две земљотреса, јачине око 4 степена, од тада до данас. Главни град Хаитија, Порт-о-пренс, је у рушевинама. Број мртвих је непознат, али се процене крећу од конзервативних 50.000 до чак 200.000 жртава.

Многе земље су понудиле помоћ. Амерички Црвени крст је у среду почео да прикупља донације преко СМС порука, и за само три дана сакупио преко 8 милиона долара. Али бродови који допремају хуманитарну помоћ немају где да пристану - лука у Порт-о-пренсу је уништена земљотресом. Ни ваздушни пут не обећава - на аеродрому Тусен Ловертир не ради сигнализација и нема горива за авионе. По свему судећи биће на америчким маринцима, који су у петак почели да пристижу на Хаити, да успоставе контролу летова и импровизују луку.

Занимљив је одговор Хаићана на катастрофу. Власти су готово потпуно одсутне - не знам да ли зато што је инфраструктура уништена, или зато што је није ни било. Ископавање преживелих и страдалих врши се самоиницијативно, тамо где се групе Хаићана организују. Неко донесе лопату, неко бушилицу, па копај. Али многи само седе кататонично и кукају како "нико ништа не ради да нам помогне." Углавном страним новинарима. У петак сам чуо и вест да су наоружане почеле да пљачкају преживеле...

Цивилизација је крхка ствар, коју сви узимамо здраво за готово. Али није тешко да услед неке катастрофе - земљотреса, поплаве, урагана, рата - престану да раде телефони, и нестане струје, воде, гаса... Лишени технологије савременог живота, људи су принуђени да преживљавају како знају. И ту онда покажу своју праву природу. Неки прискачу у помоћ људима око себе. Други прилику користе за пљачку и насиље. А има и превише оних који само седе и чекају да им неко други каже шта да раде - или, још боље, ради уместо њих.

Хаити је већ скоро сто година вазал САД. Вудро Вилсон их је окупирао током 1. светског рата, наводно да спречи немачку интервенцију, а у ствари да обезбеди монопол америчких плантажера. Од тада наовамо, Хаити је или под директном окупацијом америчких трупа, или под диктатуром коју одобрава Вашингтон (нпр. по злу познатих оца и сина Дувалијеа). После 2. светског рата, ови диктатори су извршили "реформе" тако што су сеоско становништво сатерали у Порт-о-пренс обећањем послова у индустрији, а село оставили плантажерима. Индустрија се никад није развила. Престоница је била препуна незапослених земљорадника, а Хаити је гладовао. Онда је почела да пристиже "помоћ" са стране. На Хаитију делује скоро 10.000 невладиних организација, више по глави становника него било где друго у свету. Као резултат, Хаићани су почели да животаре од "социјале" са стране - а њихове вође су се лепо богатиле убирући постотак речене помоћи.

Наравоученија у овој трагичној причи има много. Ако их видите, добро је. Ако их не видите, читајте опет - нећу да вам их набијам на нос. Тиме бих вам учинио исту медвеђу услугу коју су амерички и белосветски душебрижници учинили Хаићанима.

Ako se ja od svih ljudi ponašam hrišćanskije nego mnogi hrišćani, onda ti hrišćani imaju problem. I to veliki.    Na to gledam ovako - oni će morati da odgovaraju pred nadležnim službama kad geknu; ja ću pak smatrati da te službe, ako uopšte postoje, za mene nisu ni nadležne.

Posledice su strašne, međutim, ovakav zemljotres da je zveknuo u Nemačkoj npr. izazvao bi daleko manje žrtava. Katastrofa na Haitiju je upravo posledica siromaštva i usled toga nekvalitetne, jeftine gradnje stambenih i ostalih objekata.

Doctor: Quake victims dying without US airlifts

MIAMI – The U.S. military has halted flights carrying Haitian earthquake victims to the United States because of an apparent cost dispute, though a doctor warned that some injured patients faced imminent death if the flights don't resume.

The evacuations were temporarily suspended Wednesday, said Capt. Kevin Aandahl, spokesman for U.S. Transportation Command. The flights were halted a day after Florida Gov. Charlie Crist asked the federal government to help pay for care.

However, Dr. Barth Green, a doctor involved in the relief effort in Port-au-Prince, warned that his patients needed to get to better hospitals.

"We have 100 critically ill patients who will die in the next day or two if we don't Medevac them," said Green, chairman of the University of Miami's Global Institute for Community Health and Development.

At a temporary field hospital at Haiti's international airport, set up with donations to Green's institute, two men had already died of tetanus. Doctors said 5-year-old Betina Joseph faced a similar fate within 24 hours unless evacuated to a U.S. hospital where she can be put on a respirator.

The girl — infected with tetanus through a two-inch cut on her thigh — weakly shooed a fly buzzing around her face as her mother caressed her corn rows, apparently unaware that getting the girl out could mean life or death.

"If we can't save her by getting her out right away, we won't save her," said Dr. David Pitcher, one of 34 surgeons staffing the field hospital.

There were some states that would not accept patients who needed care in the U.S., and they could not be transported without a hospital to accept them, Aandahl said.

Aandahl declined to specify which states declined to accept patients, and he referred further questions to a Pentagon press office, where an after-hours answering service could not accept incoming messages Saturday.

Florida officials said Saturday that they were not aware of any hospital in the state refusing to take in the patients. However, in a letter Tuesday to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the governor said "Florida's health care system is quickly reaching saturation, especially in the area of high level trauma care."

Crist asked Sebelius to activate the National Disaster Medical System, which is typically used in domestic disasters and pays for victims' care. His letter noted the state's health care system was already stretched by the winter tourism season and annual "snowbird" migration. South Florida hospitals also were preparing for a surge in visitors for the NFL Pro Bowl on Sunday and the Super Bowl next weekend.

While in Tampa on Saturday, Crist said Florida's Department of Children and Families Secretary George Sheldon estimated the state's costs had reached about $7 million.

Poor coordination and limited resources, not medical care costs, drove the governor's request, said John Cherry, spokesman for the state Division of Emergency Management.

"We've made it clear that (the cost) is an issue we'll deal with down the road," he said.

Health officials say the medical flights landed without any advance notice, and the poor coordination may be keeping some survivors from getting the help they need, Cherry said. He cited the case of a burn victim flown earlier this week into Tampa, which is not equipped to treat those injuries.

Crist said his state remains committed to caring for injured earthquake victims and reuniting families, though he was reaching out to other states to help care for them as well.

As of Friday, the Florida Department of Health reported that 526 patients had been received at hospitals in the state: more than 400 in South Florida, 76 in the Orlando area and 37 in the Tampa area. Four burn victims were transported to North Carolina, Crist spokesman Sterling Ivey said.

"Recently we learned that federal planning is underway to move between 30-50 critically ill patients per day for an indefinite period of time," Crist told Sebelius, saying Florida could not handle so many patients.

More than 135 patients remain hospitalized in South Florida, said Jeanne Eckes-Roper, the health and medical chairwoman of a state domestic security task force for the South Florida region.

She requested on Monday that new patients be taken elsewhere in Florida.

"We had to make sure we did not overwhelm our capacity," she said. "We stand ready to take whatever the government wants to give us."

Aandahl said no evacuation requests have been made by U.S. military medical facilities in Haiti, including the hospital ship the USNS Comfort, since the flights were suspended Wednesday.

There were only about a dozen medical evacuations by the U.S. military after the Jan. 12 earthquake, he said.

Haiti detains Americans taking kids across border

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Ten Americans were detained by Haitian police on Saturday as they tried to bus 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic, allegedly without proper documents.

The Baptist church members from Idaho called it a "Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission," meant to save abandoned children from the chaos following Haiti's earthquake. Their plan was to scoop up 100 kids and take them by bus to a rented hotel at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic, where they planned to establish an orphanage.

Whether they realized it or not, these Americans — the first known to be taken into custody since the Jan. 12 earthquake — put themselves in the middle of a firestorm in Haiti, where government leaders have suspended adoptions amid fears that parentless or lost children are more vulnerable than ever to child trafficking.

"In this chaos the government is in right now we were just trying to do the right thing," the group's leader, Laura Silsby told The Associated Press at the judicial police headquarters in the capital, where the Americans were being held pending a Monday hearing before a judge.

Silsby said they only had the best of intentions and paid no money for the children. She said her group obtained them through a well-known Haitian pastor named Jean Sanbil of the Sharing Jesus Ministries.

Silsby, 40, of Boise, Idaho, was asked if she didn't consider it naive to cross the border without adoption papers at a time when Haitians are so concerned about child trafficking. "By no means are we any part of that. That's exactly what we are trying to combat," she said.

Social Affairs Minister Yves Cristallin told reporters the Americans were suspected of taking part in an illegal adoption scheme.

Cristallin said the 33 children were lodged late Saturday at an SOS Children's Village outside of Port-au-Prince. SOS Children's Villages is a global nonprofit based in Austria.

Many children in Haitian orphanages aren't actually orphans but have been abandoned by family who cannot afford to care for them. Advocates both here and abroad caution that with so many people unaccounted for, adoptions should not go forward until it can be determined that the children have no relatives who can raise them.

UNICEF and other NGOs have been registering children who may have been separated from their parents. Relief workers are locating children at camps housing the homeless around the capital and are placing them in temporary shelters while they try to locate their parents or a more permanent home.

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti sent consular officials, who met with the detained Americans and gave them bug spray and MREs to eat, according to Sean Lankford of Meridian, Idaho, whose wife and 18-year-old daughter were being held.

"They have to go in front of a judge on Monday," Lankford told The Associated Press.

"There are allegations of child trafficking and that really couldn't be farther from the truth," he added. The children "were going to get the medical attention they needed. They were going to get the clothes and the food and the love they need to be healthy and to start recovering from the tragedy that just happened."

Haiti has imposed new controls on adoptions since the earthquake, which left thousands of children separated from their parents or orphaned. The government now requires Prime Minister Max Bellerive to personally authorize the departure of any child as a way to prevent child trafficking.

Silsby said they had documents from the Dominican government, but did not seek any paperwork from the Haitian authorities before taking 33 children from 2 months to 12 years old to the border, where Haitian police stopped them Friday evening. She said the children were brought to the pastor by distant relatives, and that the only ones to be put up for adoption would be those without close family to care for them.

The 10 Americans include members of the Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian, Idaho and the East Side Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho, as well as people from Texas and Kansas. Idaho friends and relatives have been in touch with them through text messages and phone calls, Lankford said.

"The plan was never to go adopt all these kids. The plan was to create this orphanage where kids could live. And kids get adopted out of orphanages. People go down and they're going to fall in love with these kids, and many of these kids will end up getting adopted."

"Of course I'm concerned for my wife and my daughter," he added. "They were hoping to make a difference and be able to help those kids."

The group described their plans on a Web site where they also asked for tax-deductible contributions, saying they would "gather" 100 orphans and bus them to the Dominican resort of Cabarete, before building a more permanent orphanage in the Dominican town of Magante.

"Given the urgent needs from this earthquake, God has laid upon our hearts the need to go now versus waiting until the permanent facility is built," the group wrote.

Humanitarnu misiju na Haitiju poslednjih dana potresaju skandali. Ne internetu su osvanule fotografije lekara koji pijani i nasmejani vrše amputacije udova povređenih Haićana. Istovremeno na granici Haitija i Dominikanske Republike uhapšeno je 10 Amerikanaca koji su pokušali ilegalno da iz zemlje odvedu 33 dece.

Na slikama koje su osvanule na ,,Fejsbuku" vidi se nekoliko lekara sa instrumentima za amputaciju kako ispijaju alkohol nad povređenim Haićanima koji obnaženi leže na operacionim stolovima. Na fotografijama se vidi kako pijani lekari daju alkohol i svojim teško povređenim pacijentima i međusobno nazdravljaju.

Istraga o skandalu

Odbor za etiku medicinskog osoblja ,,Komonvelt" saopštio je da je pokrenuo istragu o slučaju sa skandaloznim fotografijama.

Ministar zdravlja Portorika Lorenco Gonzales nazvao je ovaj skandal ,,tužnom situacijom", ističući da ,,takvo ponašanje nekolicine medicinara šteti nastojanju ostalih da pomognu žrtvama".

- Kada sam video fotografije, bio sam vrlo zabrinut jer su slikali ljude bez njihovog pristanka - rekao je Gonzales.

Zvaničnici tvrde da će zbog kršenja Hipokratove zakletve neki od odgovornih sigurno izgubiti posao, a verovatno će i njihova lekarska karijera biti završena.

Voodoo priests in Haiti are being lynched by mobs who blame them for spreading cholera, the country's government has said.

At least 45 people have been lynched in recent weeks as Haiti continues to be ravaged by a cholera epidemic.

Haiti's communications minister has made an appeal for the lynchings to end and called for a campaign to ensure people understand how cholera spreads.

More than 2,500 Haitians have died from the water-borne disease since October.

Another 121,000 people have been treated for symptoms of cholera, with at least 63,500 admitted to hospital, figures show.

The outbreak has also prompted angry protests aimed at the United Nations, whose Nepalese peacekeepers have been suspected of introducing cholera to Haiti.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced an investigation into the reports, although the UN initially denied the suggestion.

Officials counted 40 people killed - mostly voodoo priests - killed in one region of Haiti, the AFP news agency reported, with five others killed elsewhere.

"The victims... were stoned or hacked with machetes before being burned in the streets," communications ministry official Moise Fritz Evens said.

Haiti's communications minister said she abhorred the killings and insisted that the answer was to improve general education about how cholera is transmitted.

"Voodoo practitioners have nothing to do with the cholera epidemic. We must press for an awareness campaign about the disease in the communities."

A highly prominent voodoo leader, Max Beauvoir, told Reuters news agency police were not doing enough to stop the violence.

"Since the earthquake some people have been blaming us, saying that we cast spells and did evil things which brought the earthquake as a punishment," he said.

Haiti's cholera epidemic has provoked widespread fear across the country. Anger spread when suspicions emerged that the Nepalese UN peacekeepers could have brought the disease to Haiti - where it is extremely rare - from their country, where it is endemic.

Poor sanitary conditions in much of quake-hit Haiti have contributed to the rapid spread of cholera, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can kill quickly but is treated easily through rehydration and antibiotics.

The country was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in January 2010 that devastated most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed at least 250,000 people.
