Don't be afraid of Russia, Putin tells West

Quote

Russia is not a threat to the West, President Vladimir Putin insisted in an interview published on Saturday, saying he was still committed to a Ukraine peace deal after a fresh flare-up in the country's east.

"I would like to say - there's no need to be afraid of Russia," Putin told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published Saturday, ruling out a major conflict between Russia and NATO member countries.

"The world has changed so much that people in their right mind cannot imagine such a large-scale military conflict today."

"We have other things to do, I can assure you," the Russian president said.

"Only a sick person -- and even then only in his sleep -- can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack NATO."

The Russian president spoke ahead of his visit to Italy next week that will include a meeting with Pope Francis.

Putin's interview was released by the Kremlin just as Group of Seven leaders are gearing up to meet in the Bavarian Alps for a summit this weekend without Russia.

In the interview, Putin stressed that Russia merely sought to defend itself from outside threats.

He pointed out that NATO members have defence expenditures that are 10 times Russia's military spending, adding that the US military budget was the biggest in the world.

To ensure a strategic balance, Russia will develop "systems to overpower anti-missile defences", Putin said.

"We have made significant progress in this direction," he added, without providing further details.

Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine last year has jangled nerves in Europe, with Baltic and Nordic countries reporting an uptick in Russian military activity over the past year.

Pentagon officials said on Friday that the United States was considering a range of moves to beef up security, including bolstering missile defences or even deploying land-based missiles in Europe.

Speaking about the Ukraine crisis, Putin accused Kiev authorities of being unwilling to implement a European-brokered peace deal agreed in February in Minsk and enter into dialogue with pro-Moscow rebels.

"The problem is that representatives of the current Kiev authorities do not even want to sit down to talks with them," Putin said. "And there is nothing we can do about it," he added, urging the West to prod Kiev into negotiating with the rebels.

"We would like these agreements to be implemented," Putin said, stressing that Kiev should ensure autonomy for rebel-held territories and implement a law on municipal elections and on amnesty.

"The leaders of the self-proclaimed republics have publicly said that under certain conditions -- that is the implementation of these Minsk agreements -- they are ready to consider the possibility of considering themselves part of Ukraine."

"I believe this position should be considered as a serious, good preliminary condition to start serious negotiations," he said, urging the European Union to provide "greater financial assistance" to Kiev.

Ties between Russia and the West have plunged to their lowest level since the end of the Cold War, with Moscow being accused of inciting a separatist rebellion in eastern Ukraine.

-'No mistress'-

Putin said Moscow was ready to build an equal partnership with the EU and accused Brussels of pursuing relations based solely "on material interests".

"We never treated Europe like a mistress," he said, using a metaphor suggested by an Italian journalist.

"I speak absolutely seriously now. We always offered a serious relationship."

He accused the EU of rupturing Russia's economic ties with fellow ex-Soviet nations, saying if Baltic nations joined the EU power grid, Moscow would have to fork out up to 2.5 billion euros ($2.7 billion) to build new transmission lines.

If Ukraine chose to join the European power grid too, the costs for Russia would grow to some 8-10 billion euros, Putin added.

Ovo objašnjenje će sigurno pomoći:

Moscow 'powerless to stop' Russians from fighting in Ukraine

QuoteMoscow (AFP) - The secretary of Russia's security council said Monday it is impossible to stop Russians from going to fight in Ukraine because they are guided by "emotions."

Nikolai Patrushev, the hawkish former chief of the federal security service (FSB) who currently sits at the helm of President Vladimir Putin's group of security advisors, said the conflict is fuelled by US attempts to wipe out Russia.
"We don't call on people to go and we don't reward them. But really, it is impossible to prevent it," he said, once people hear about the "atrocities" happening across the border.
"Emotions go into play, people head over there and fight," Patrushev said in a wide-ranging interview to Kommersant newspaper published Monday.
The 15-month-long conflict in Ukraine has claimed the lives of nearly 6,500 people and driven more than a million from their homes.
Ukraine and the West say Russia sends regular troops into eastern Ukraine to boost separatist forces in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, but Moscow flatly denies such accusations.
On Monday the European Union formally agreed to prolong damaging economic sanctions against Moscow over its support for the rebels until January 2016.
Deployments of volunteers from Russia are no secret and various organisations have openly held collection drives for military gear in Moscow and elsewhere.
Putin portrays the crisis in Ukraine as the product of regime change instigated and funded by the United States, but Patrushev said in the interview that America's real goal is to destroy Russia.
"They don't care what will happen in Ukraine, they just need to exert pressure on Russia, so that is what the United States is doing," he said.
"They would want very much that Russia would not exist. As a country," he said.
"We have great resource wealth. And Americans believe we have them illegally or undeservedly," he said, adding that the US completely overpowers the European Union regarding Russia policy.
EU sanctions were only imposed due to "US influence," he said, adding even that Europe secretly recognises the annexation by Moscow of the Crimean peninsula in March 2014, which unleashed the first round of sanctions.
"They understand that everything that happened in Crimea was legal."
"Europeans are rather weak-willed and Americans are strong. The United States wants to dominate in the world," he said.

Rusija za svaki slučaj da proveri legalitet nezavisnih statusa baltičkih republika:

Генпрокуратура РФ проверит законность признания независимости республик Прибалтики
Quote

Muslims in Moscow Work to Break a Stereotype

Quote
MOSCOW — Dozens of women dressed in colorful hijabs and floral dresses gathered under gray skies recently in the garden of a four-star hotel here for a charity fashion bazaar. They tried on styles from local designers and sampled new cosmetics, posing for selfies and dropping sunny filters on the images before posting them to Instagram and Facebook.
"We're making Muslims the trendsetters," said Natalia Narmin Ichaeva, a public relations specialist who organized the charity event in May. Ms. Ichaeva, who converted to Islam two years ago, is among a small group of young Moscovite Muslims who are trying to help redefine the image of Islam in Russia.

In recent decades, Islam here has been associated largely with terrorist attacks, two wars against separatists in Chechnya and a continuing insurgency in the North Caucasus. Muslim women in particular have been stigmatized because of so-called black widows, women who become suicide bombers to avenge the deaths of their fathers, brothers and husbands. Russian tabloids and television have reinforced that stereotype.
But in the last year and a half, as turmoil in Ukraine has dominated the news media's attention, Ms. Ichaeva and others like her saw a new window of opportunity to change perceptions.
The Russian government's strained relations with the United States and Europe have the Kremlin looking to strengthen ties with other parts of the world, notably China and countries in the Middle East with large Muslim populations. Muslims in Russia have also received a public relations boost from President Vladimir V. Putin's recent emphasis on conservative values, including religion.
"I noticed Muslims moved out of the spotlight," said Rezeda Suleyman, a 23-year-old fashion designer. Ms. Suleyman said it had become easier to go out covered and sell her modest clothing to non-Muslim women.
This short documentary shows Muslim activists like Ms. Suleyman and Ms. Ichaeva, as they try to improve the public perception of Islam and raise the the social status of other Muslim women.
As Zulfiya Raupova, a composer who calls herself a secular Muslim, put it, "It's always a good time to break stereotypes."

Mysterious Russian Statue Is 11,000 Years Old - Twice As Old As The Pyramids
Quote
A mysterious wooden idol found in a Russian peat bog has been dated to 11,000 years ago - and contains a code no one can decipher.

The Shigir Idol is twice as old as the Pyramids and Stonehenge - and is by far the oldest wooden structure in the world.

Even more mysteriously, it is covered in what experts describe as 'encrypted code' - a message from a lost civilisation.

Professor Mikhail Zhilin of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Archeology said: 'The ornament is covered with nothing but encrypted information. People were passing on knowledge with the help of the Idol.'

Russian experts think that the strange carvings may contain a belief system, the equivalent of the Bible's Genesis.

The statue had been dated as being 9,500 years old, after its discovery in a peat bog 125 years ago.

But new research in Mannheim, Germany used Accelerated Mass Spectrometry n small fragments of the sculpture, and found it is at least 11,000 years old.

That means the sculpture dates from the very beginning of the Holocene epoch - the era when man rose to dominate the world.

Moskva: Ako Damask zove rusku vojsku...

Rusija će razmotriti mogućnost da pošalje svoju vojsku u Siriju, ako Damask to bude tražio, saopštio je portparol ruskog predsednika, Dmitrij Peskov.
