Midian-hater David Cronenberg seems to be moving away from gooey brain-warping material in favor of... bloody eruptions of brutality.

The Canadian horror-master who made heads explode and typewriters talk will direct New Line's adaptation of the DC Comics-published tale A History of Violence. The original story (from Judge Dredd creator John Wagner and artist Vince Locke) follows a family man who takes down some local thugs at his diner and becomes a media celebrity. The sudden attention, however, uncovers some dark secrets from his violent past, particularly some mobsters he crossed long ago.

The graphic novel was published DC's Paradox Press, as did the source material for the Tom Hanks revenge film Road to Perdition. Cronenberg had been planning a film titled Painkillers with Nic Cage and his Spider star Ralph Fiennes, but it seems to have stalled at the moment, possibly mired in sticky glop left over from his previous projects.

hmmm...

amazon daje vrlo malo detalja:
It was just another quiet day at McKenna's Diner--until a couple of wanted killers walked in looking for trouble. Instead, they got bullets, and Tom McKenna got to be an instant media celebrity. That got him a lot of attention from some people he thought he'd escaped long ago. The kind of people who never forget a face--even after twenty years...

David Cronenberg, who was last behind the camera for 2002's Spider, is gearing up for his next project - an adaptation of the graphic novel A History of Violence. And he's nabbed The Lord of the Rings king as his star. In the movie, Viggo Mortensen (who was just so friggin' creepy as Satan in The Prophecy, by the way) "plays a pillar of a small town who runs a diner and lives quietly with his lawyer wife and kids. When he thwarts a robbery and is lauded as a hero in press reports, he is brought to the attention of unsavory types who think he is a former colleague gone underground."

Unsavory types on your tail AND married to a lawyer. Does it get any worse?

The graphic novel has been adapted for the screen by Josh Olson who, according to the IMDB, has written movies starring Zach Galligan, Eric Roberts, Casper Van Dien, and Bentley Mitchum.

Yeah. It gets worse.

OF THE FUTURE i dr. najavljene stvari...

"A psychic who has succumbed to a series of false premonitions contends with one that could be her final vision. Feeling compelled to patronize a London dive bar, she encounters two different men -- one of whom might be her killer."

"Ernest Hemingway once wrote: "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part."

stari dobri AICN:

Hello Harry and crew. Long time reader, first time poster. I had the privilege of seeing the new David Cronenberg film 'A History of Violence' Wednesday night at a test screening in Pasadena. And let me be the first to tell you that this is a very fine addition into the catalog of Mr. Cronenberg. This was a very strange experience right from the start complete with a sighting of David Cronenberg himself and a disrobing transvestite in the theatre...but that's a story for another website.

This was quite a different movie for David Cronenberg, besides the returning crew of regulars...Howard Shore, Carol Spier and Peter Suschitzky. It almost seems that he could possibly break into the mainstream with this film, for the audience seemed to really enjoy this twisted tale of revenge and redemption. Lots of cheers and even several laughs, which is not what I was expecting at all. Having read the graphic novel beforehand I wasn't sure how this would transfer into his stylings, but it was filled with plenty of the little things that makes his movies stand out as they do. I was very happy to see a return to the uber gruesome and the super sexual, but I do love his toned down work as well.

The movie opens with the introduction of two men having a discussion as they are leaving a hotel room. The dialog between the two characters almost played out more like a David Lynch film then a Cronenberg one. Very quirky and sort of funny, but that soon turns ugly when you find out what happened to the employees of the hotel. This scene establishes violence as the main tone of the film, and it rears its ugly head at every chance it gets.

Next introduces the characters of Tom Stall and his family. They live in a nice small town where everyone knows everyone else, and everyone knows everyone else's business. Tom is played by Viggo Mortenson and his wife Edie is played by the very sexy Maria Bello. They have two children, a teenage son and a very young daughter (I have forgotten their names and who played them). Tom is the owner of Stalls diner, which makes him a figure of society in that small town. The relationship between Tom and Edie seems very close, like they are high school sweethearts, but we find out later that Tom moved to town once he was a little older, with no mention of his past or where he has come from. These two have some pretty explicit cronenbergesque scenes together, which Im hoping will not be cut out of the theatrical release, but Im pretty sure it would deem a NC-17 rating.

Things soon turn a rye when the two thugs from the beginning of the film stroll into the diner late one night. They start screaming for coffee after Tom tells them that they have closed for the night. Things turn very ugly when one of them locks the front door and grabs a waitress and puts a gun to her head. Tom bursts on to the scene and eventually kills both crooks. This scene made me giddy as a school boy to see David Cronenberg return to his horrific style of violence. There are scenes in this movie that rival 'The Fly' as far as grotesqueness goes.

Tom becomes a savior in everyone's eyes as a result of his heroic actions. Business starts booming and the reporters start looking for their exclusive interview with the reluctant hero. But with the fame comes certain people prying into his past. In walks three mobster looking guys, one of them being the sinister ? played by Ed Harris in a rarely seen bad guy role. Ed is great in this role, complete with a nasty scar and a half dead eye. Ed plays a made gangster looking for an old enemy, who used barbed wire to attempt to rip out his eye. He is convinced that Tom is this man, named Joey Cusak. I don't want to spoil anything else to come except to tell you that the movie takes some twists and turns that would turn any suburban dream into a nightmare.

In the end Tom finds himself up against Richie, the head of that mafia family, played by the fantastic William Hurt in another rare bad guy role. I won't say anything that happens here except that this is the funniest role I have ever seen William Hurt play, but he is also a sinister force not to be reckoned with. The meeting between the two is very short, but not uneventful. The ending seemed a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen a little back story on Viggo and Williams characters (like it is in the graphic novel), but I have no qualms with the way the ending was handled. Things get resolved but it is in no ways a happy ending.

Fear and Violence play as one of the main characters in the film. Almost every scene either has a form of violence or a threat of one coming on, including the sex scenes. This is a great character study on how people deal with threats and rise up and stand up for themselves. The underlying Cronenberg themes are very evident and a welcoming treat for a somewhat cliché story. I was thoroughly impressed by the film and hope they don't change a thing. The music was great and minimal, as most Howard Shore soundtracks for Cronenberg films are, unless there were parts not finished for this test screening. Great cinematography by Peter Suschitzky and fantastic production by Carol Spier. This is definitely another win for Mr. Cronenberg. If you use this call me THE NEW FLESH.

Can't argue with a confident man.

To je ubedljivo najjaci film u trilogiji Shivers - Rabid - Brood. Prvi Kronenbergov film sa jakim glumcima i cvrstim likovima. Veoma ozbiljno delo, koje u umetnickom smislu znacajno nadmasuje Scanners.

I saw the new Cronenberg movie last night at a test screening in Pasadena. It's really going to confound some of his die hard fans, but holy shit is it ever a kick ass movie. Viggo Mortensen plays a midwest family man whose life gets turned upside down when some bad ass drifters try to rob his diner and kill everyone in it. I don't want to give too much away about the plot, because this movie has a lot of unexpected twists and turns.

Nothing about this movie feels like a Cronenberg movie, but it fits into his resume perfectly, somehow. It's all about violence and what growns underneath the normal world. Viggo gives an amazing performance

This movie should make him a real star, instead of "that guy with the sword in those hobbit movies." Maria Bello gives an incredible performance as his wife, and the sex scenes between them are smoking hot. The kid who plays their teenage son is great, too. There's a locker room confrontation with the school bully that plays out in a way I've never seen in a movie before. It's just smart and funny and very, very real.

For a movie called A History of Violence and directed by David Cronenberg, there's not a lot of violence, but those scenes are incredible - you feel every punch, every bullet. The scenes are visceral and real and painful. Ed Harris gives yet another great performance as an old mobster who thinks he recognizes Viggo from the old days, and the makeup is incredible - it really looks like one of his eyes got torn up with barbed wire, the scarring is that real.

William Hurt shows up at the end and gives the kind of insane, energized performance you've never seen him give before. He's astonishing.

Like I said, I don't want to give away too much about the plot because it's loaded with great twists and turns, and I challenge anyone to figure out where it's headed. Cronenberg's in top form. I've never seen a Cronenberg film with so much bright sunlight in it, but it looks amazing, and it's paced beautifully. He gets incredible performances out of everyone - place your money on Maria Bello finally getting that nomination she's been due since The Cooler off of this one - and the tension just builds and builds and builds until the amazing final shot.

I admit it, I enjoyed his arty movies of the last few years, but it's awesome seeing Cronenberg step into the big studio ring and score a major knock-out. If you liked Mystic River and Unforgiven, you're gonna love it. This movie rocks.

evo nekih kritika:
NY TIMES
...
extraordinarily important part of this masterly work: its supple tone shifts. "The History of Violence" shifts its tone faster and better than any film I can think of, and that is crucial to its point, purpose and power. It shifts radically from the deeply serious to the deeply unnerving to the outright parodic with breathtaking speed and effect. It slyly draws you into the pleasure of violence (Mr. Cronenberg outdoes John Woo in the film's "action" scenes), then makes you take uncomfortable stock of your laughter. In effect, it deconstructs the American action movie. And it is awesome.

Film review: A History of Violence
By Ray Bennett, Reuters
CANNES (Hollywood Reporter) - David Cronenberg's competition entry "A History of Violence" is a cleverly told "what if?" movie that raises significant questions about trust, redemption and forgiveness.
One of the Canadian director's more straightforward pictures, it should delight mainstream audiences who prefer their action pictures to have some depth of character, several twists in the plot and a satisfying conclusion.
What if you were a decent man, with a loving wife and two children, running a diner in a small town, and two hoodlums showed up at your place and called you by a different name?
Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) and his lawyer wife, Edie (Maria Bello), are happily raising two pleasant kids in Millbrook, Ind., when their world is rocked by an act of extreme violence.
The surprise is that it's easygoing Tom who commits the violence. When the two thugs in his diner go to kill a waitress, Tom leaps into action like a natural-born killer, disposing of the assailants with merciless efficiency.
He instantly is hailed as an American hero and becomes the subject of national newspaper headlines and television news programs. Just as the furor appears to be dying down, three more hard-looking men in black suits and dark glasses enter Tom's diner.
Their leader has a fearsome scar that runs across his almost blind left eye to his cheek. The local sheriff later reveals the man to be one Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris), a well-known Philadelphia mobster who has emerged from 15 years in prison.
Fogarty says that Tom's real name is "Joey," and he just smiles when Tom denies it. Tom is clearly at risk, and as the threat escalates, his family must deal with suspicion and fear until a bloody resolution finally resolves things.
Cronenberg is in fine mischievous form in "History of Violence." While the narrative is direct, screenwriter Josh Olson seeds it with misdirection and mixes a good amount of very smart humor into his violent story.
The story moves so swiftly that it's easy to overlook the fact that the media, who are all over Tom's story at first, never show up again, and leaving fingerprints doesn't appear to bother anyone.
The film delves into the nature of violence and makes the discomfiting suggestion that it can be a good thing. Cronenberg makes the audience complicit in that by playing some scenes wittily to elicit audience sympathy.
The violence in the film is short, sharp and nasty, the way it almost always is when not highly stylized for the movies. Mortensen is immediately appealing as a small-town nice guy, and he somehow retains an aura of at least reluctance when forced to mete out stunning retribution.
Former "ER" star Bello deals superbly with the many levels of emotion stirred in her character as she must reassess the man she married while fighting to protect her children. Ashton Holmes does fine work as the son, and Heidi Hayes is eerily wise as the young daughter.
Harris makes his hoodlum thoroughly chilling, as does William Hurt, who shows up as wealthy thug who can't figure out that the reason he is stalled in middle management of organized crime is his lack of intelligence, not the fault of others. They make a memorable pair of bad guys in a film that makes being a good guy sometimes very ambiguous.

Cronenberg's Film Full of Violence, Sex
Monday May 16 3:48 PM ET

Early scenes in "A History of Violence" show a loving family in small-town Indiana. This being a David Cronenberg movie, you suspect their lives are about to get very, very twisted.

The director of "The Fly" and "Videodrome" is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, having won a special jury prize for "Crash" and presided over the judging. He has never won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, but his new film which premiered Monday looks like one of the stronger contenders so far.

The film shows how an unexpected outburst of violence transforms a folksy diner owner (Viggo Mortensen, who played the title character in "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King") and his family. There's plenty of blood and gore which, Cronenberg says, is not gratuitous.

"I think what we did in this movie vis-a-vis violence was ultra-responsible, because it's a serious discussion of the nature of violence and the impact that it has on society and family and human life and on human bodies as well," he told reporters.

As the movie opens, Mortensen's character, Tom Stall, has a storybook life. He has a caring wife (Maria Bello from "The Cooler" and "Autofocus"), a smart teenage son and an adorable little daughter. When the youngest has a nightmare, the whole family crawls into her bed to comfort her.

Things take a turn for the weird when some Philadelphia mobsters charge into Tom's life, convinced he's a long-lost associate.

The movie has "the resonance of Westerns, of American Western movies and the mythology involved, a man who takes a gun in his hands to protect his family and his homestead against other men with guns," Cronenberg said.

One of the mobsters is played by Ed Harris, who saunters into town wearing a dark suit and sunglasses and proceeds to stalk Tom and his family. Tom does everything he can to convince Harris' character he has the wrong man.

Eventually, Tom is forced to make a trip to Philadelphia to confront the mob leader at the heart of his troubles (William Hurt). Hurt is on screen only about 10 minutes, but it's a remarkable performance: He's creepy, larger-than-life and very funny.

Giving too much of the plot away would spoil the movie. But at a press screening, many scenes had the audience laughing and clapping even the violent sequences.

The uncomfortable mix of humor and violence is meant to make people think.

"I'm not surprised the audience would applaud," Cronenberg said. "Because I wanted them to be complicit. I wanted them to be involved in it."

At Cannes, the Canadian director has a history of causing discomfort and controversy.

When he headed the jury in 1999, people were shocked by its choices such as giving top acting prizes to people who had never acted before.

In 1996, some people booed and walked out of "Crash," Cronenberg's twisted movie about lovers who get turned on by car crashes; then it won a special Jury Prize.

Like "Crash," Cronenberg's new movie tackles the uncomfortable links between sexuality and violence. At the beginning, Tom's wife puts on a cheerleader's uniform to spice up their marriage. By the end, their love life enters darker territory.

"I think there is always a sexual component in violence, and there's a violent component in sexuality, any kind," saiad Cronenberg, whose films include "Dead Ringers" and "Spider." "So to me that's just a natural thing to explore."

Director Cronenberg Receives Film Award
Wednesday May 18 6:49 AM ET

Canadian film maker David Cronenberg will receive the lifetime achievement award at this year's Stockholm International Film Festival, organizers said Monday.

Cronenberg, a renowned horror director and the man behind such movies as "The Fly" "Naked Lunch" and "Spider," will receive the Bronze Horse award for his "mind-blowing visual aesthetic," that has "penetrated mass phenomena in modern society as well as the mind and body of the individual," the award jury said in a statement.

The award will be given to Cronenberg during the Nov. 17-27 festival in the Swedish capital.

Last year's Bronze Horse winner was American director Oliver Stone, and previous winners include filmmakers Roman Polanski and David Lynch and actresses Lauren Bacall and Gena Rowlands.

VARIETY kaže:
Without knowing who made the film, one could say it's a very well crafted, slightly idiosyncratic look at some traditional American themes regarding the sanctity of family and the undercurrents beneath the surface people don't often like to disturb. But coming from Cronenberg, the question arises: Is that all there is? There's just not that much going on here, and what there is seems relatively ordinary, both on the domestic and gangster fronts.

Hmmm...

CLIP:
The clip was the entire hold-up scene from the trailer, the event that sets off the whole story. There's a young guy and an older guy that decide they need some cash, so they decide to stick up poor Viggo's little diner in Buttfuck, Nowhere USA. Big mistake.
This whole scene is cleanly shot, however it comes off extremely disturbing. The younger guy takes Viggo's wife (I think) who is a waitress and is told to make an example out of her. He held his hand against the terrified girl's mouth to silence her screams. When he takes his hand away, he wipes the spittle on her front, over her breasts, then smells his hand. This isn't done sexually, but it felt that this poor woman was more violated than if she had been raped on-screen. I don't know how Cronenberg did it, but it was really disturbing.
Coffee pot is smashed, people get shot and Viggo gets a knife through the foot shortly before he gruesomely head-shots the knife wielder. There's a great cut-away to show the bad-guy's jaw exposed, the exit wound from the headshot.
This got a cheer from the crowd and when the lights came back up Cronenberg said, "I think we have a special audience here."
We were also told that there are similar scenes of such disturbing imagery in the film.

odlicna glumacka ekipa... iznad svih, Viggo, wow, fantasticna uloga... nemam tih reci.....

Glavne uloge tumaèe Vigo Mortensen i Marija Belo.

Hmmm... Znači, film je preveden kao NASILNIČKA PROŠLOST.
Mogli su i bolje to da odrade.

U posljednje vrijeme stalno gledam Dosije X i malo malo pa pomenu tu frazu za nekog kriminalca... to treba pitati policiju kako oni to zovu, ali nasilnicka proslost nije bas najsrecnije rjesenje.

David Cronenberg, who's never been shy about much, went to unusual lengths in directing the sex scenes between Viggo Mortensen and Mario Bello in his new A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Mortensen tells the site, "There's a couple of fairly racy sex scenes in the movie between Maria Bello and myself. David, trying to be helpful, as usual, thought it might be a good idea to call up his wife and have her come down to the set. The crew and Maria and I just sat and watched while he and his wife got into something comfortable—nothing—and they started to say, 'We want you to [do this].' Maria and I were both going, 'OK, we get it.'

"This is a testament to their relationship," Mortensen continues. "They kept going and they kept going and then we broke for lunch and some time in the evening Maria and I got to have a crack at it. Instead of putting us at ease, we actually were kind of freaked out... Maybe some things ought to stay private."

HISTORY, which contains some of the current movie season's most explicit sex and violence, had the highest box-office per-screen average of any wide-release film this past weekend, grossing $8.1 million at 1,340 theaters in its nationwide debut.

Nema potrebe da hvalis me, dobro ja to znam

Kunac

Ne čudi  me što svi hvale glumačke kreacije Viga i Marije. Kronenberg zna s glumcima.
