VEST:

the HILLS HAVE EYES remake, which will be shooting beginning in late April or early May in Vancouver for Dimension. Alexandre Aja directs from a script he wrote with his HIGH TENSION collaborator Gregory Levasseur, with the original film's Wes Craven and Peter Locke producing along with Craven's longtime partner Marianne Maddalena. The redux is described as "a gritty survival film in the tradition of DELIVERANCE and STRAW DOGS. A classic suburban American family decides to take a trip cross-country. However, when their trailer breaks down mysteriously in the New Mexico desert, they find themselves preyed upon by a family of deformed hill people who have been mutated by nuclear testing performed by the government in their area. The hill people see themselves as entitled to what this family has, even if it means performing horrible acts of violence to get what they want—and it's up to the family to defend themselves against these horrors..."

Here's how those "horrors" are described:

RUBY: The youngest of the hill people, 14 years old (but 18+ or emancipated preferred). Very small—five feet tall, frail, but rather pretty despite her abnormally large eyes and deformed hands. She wears a hooded sweatshirt, preventing us from seeing the part of her skull that is permanently caved in. Ruby is intrigued by this "normal" family—particularly Bobby, who is the first boy her own age she has ever met before. She is the only one of the hill people with a sense of right and wrong—she tries to help the family and protect Catherine, the baby.

PAPA JUPE (JUPITER): The leader of the mutant hill people, around 50 years old, his voice is deep, distorted and devilish; he has long hair and a beard, and evil eyes. He is the most menacing and violent of the hill people.

BIG BRAIN: One of the hill people, confined to a wheelchair. His head is 10 times bigger than his face—his head is so heavy that he is unable to hold it up, it rests back on his chair. His body is skeletal, his voice is weak and asthmatic. He is the character most representative of the damage the hill people have suffered from the nuclear fallout. He tells Doug of the fate of the hill people, of the disregard the government showed for their plight.

LIZARD: One of the mutant hill people, so named both because of his almost supernatural agility and because of the spiky chain he uses to provoke car accidents (when not is use, it drags behind him like a lizard tail). Extremely thin, and pale, with a cleft lip and a deformed jaw. He is, quite simply, a savage with no sense of pity. Scary and sadistic.

PLUTO: A giant, one of the hill people, bald, hulking and terrifying, but with the face of a cruel child, with asymmetrical eyes. And there is something childlike and dim about him, despite his huge size. And yet he is capable of terrible violence.

GOGGLE: One of the mutant hill people, so named because he keeps watch on the desert through a pair of binoculars. He has no face—his eyes, nostrils, and mouth exist in a mass of flesh. His voice is rough and deep, his pronunciation is poor and we can't understand everything he says.

LARGE WOMAN/THE OBESE WOMAN: One of the hill people, Ruby's mother. As her name suggests, should be very overweight. She also takes care of the handicapped Big Brain. She sits in a rocking chair, holding a huge pig in her arms and petting it like a dog.

CYST: One of the mutant hill people. Enormous cysts disfigure him and cover every part of his body; a metallic brace is screwed on four sides of his head helping him stand straight. No dialogue—his character is mute—but much on-camera time.

U martu prosle godine fangorija je objavila Ajin intervju:

Director Alexandre Aja (Haute Tension) talked with Fango recently about how he got the part in directing, saying...

"Wes [Craven] had seen HAUTE TENSION in LA at a screening that our agent at William Morris organized for us in November. He loved it and asked us if we had seen HILLS HAVE EYES, and if we'd be ready to consider an original approach for a remake. Scriptwriter Gregory Levasseur and I went back to France, thought about it and came back to him with ideas he liked. Then we went to see several studios with him. Many were interested, but Dimension picked up the project in January. We were very lucky that the remake of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was such a success. Survival movies from the '70s and '80s are fashionable again, and we're surfing on that wave. We were in the right place at the right time."

He then goes on to say... "HILLS HAVE EYES is very well-known—maybe not as much as TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, but the title and Michael Berryman are still very popular. It was quite popular on video in France, and people who were too young to see it when it was released can discover it on TV. Gregory and I were kids when the movie opened theatrically, but we were terrified when we watched it together. We've seen it again recently, and even though it's still scary, it looks a bit outdated. There's a lot of latitude to do something else with the story, to go further. It was probably more difficult to do a remake of TEXAS CHAINSAW, because that was a masterpiece to start with."

He continues, "For the moment, Wes is leaving us total freedom, even if he'll have final cut on the movie," Aja continues. "We're thinking of doing a realistic survival movie in the tradition of John Boorman's DELIVERANCE, while being respectful to the wishes of the fans. In our version, Michael Berryman would look almost too normal, though we might ask him to do a cameo. We're writing the script at the moment, and we're dreaming of getting John C. Reilly for the cast and to be ready to shoot this autumn."

znam da ovo nije nova vest - jer sam je ja okačio, na topiku o haute tension, još proleća 2004. čim sam tension odgledao i za MOGUĆNOST RIMEJKA saznao.

međutim, sad kad je projekat grinlajtovan i kad su pripreme za snimanje itekako odmakle, dakle kad je izvesno da će filma biti, pomislio sam da je dobro vreme da se pokrene zaseban topik, tim pre što su se javile vrlo konkretne i detaljne informacije o njemu.

a da si čitao taj topik, možda bi video i moj komentar - da je HILLS HAVE EYES  film kome malo apdejtovanja ne bi falilo; odličan kakav već jeste, ipak jeste malo dated, i reimagining - naročito kad dolazi od dokazanog majstora kakav je Aja - uopšte ne zvuči kao loša ideja.

zato mislim da nisi u pravu što ga stavljaš u isti koš sa gomilom drugih rimejaka

Deficit ideja je problem No 1 već godinama kada je horor (i ne samo horor) u pitanju i meni ne smeta da se uradi rimejk nekog poznatog filma. Šta može to da smeta? Original ostaje original, a ko ne želi, ne mora da gleda rimejk.
Uostalom, čak ikad se ne radi o zvaničnom rimejku, opet se radi o nekoj vrsti prerade već postojećih koncepcija (primer: Wrong Turn je zapravo nova verzija filma Just Before Dawn...)  
HHE nisam gledao godinama (Harvi budi drug, ajd' da napravimo neku menjažu), ali mi se čini da po senzibilitetu ta vrsta horora odlično pasuje Aji. Ako ga sudio ne sputa (DIMENSION SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), a sudeći po "Visokoj tenziji", Francuz ima da napravi odličan har-core horror, koji će se lepo nadovezati na prethodni film.

Nego, da li je neko pogledao HHE II?

naravno da sam gledao HHE 2: to ti je rimejk PETKA 13, part 2, al u pustinji.

ukratko, ispod Krejvenovog nivoa.

kompetentno, gledljivo na nekom jeftinom slasher nivou, ali krajnje nepotrebno i bledo.

Bez obzira ko radi rimejk, nema sanse da bude kao original. Ideja filma je genijalna i od nje se uvek moze napraviti dobar horor. Samo je u poslednjih par godina izaslo nekoliko filmova sa slicnom tematikom (Tcm rimejk, Pogresno skretanje...). Tacno je sta kaze Gul, da bilo bi bezveze kada bi likovi bili previse slikoviti. Sumljam da ce naci adekvatnu zamenu za Majkla Berimena. Bilo bi takodje lepo kada bi par malkice uspeli da docaraju atmosferu originala.

Da se ja pitam, nikome ne bih davao da se kiti, a pogotovu ne danas, imenom Hills Have Eyes.

Drago mi je sto pominjete WRONG TURN jer je TO film koji ODAJE POSTOVANJE !!!
I to je mnogo lepsi put za RIMEJKOVANJE - u vidu NOVOG FILMA koji je u DUHU starog!

Kao i u muzici - najbolji nacin da odas postovanje bendu je da kupis njihov CD i eventualno nagovoris par klinaca da ga poslusaju. A ne da skupis gomilu novih bendova koji sviraju stvari tog benda...Svaka cast Kornu na obradi Wall-a ali ja bih ipak da neki novi klinci otkrivaju Flojde sami i to na samom izvoru a ne preko nekog tamo Korna...

Dakle kriza ideja, po meni -  proizvod je lenjosti i igranja na sigurno a ne nepostojanja potencijala za dobre ideje!

Ghoule, ja stvarno nisam mislio da budem zlonameran (mozda si Ti tako navikao sa ljudima). A topik o Haute Tension nisam pogledao jer nisam pogledao film a ne volim spojliranje...Dakle, vest nije bila nova. A moja vest, da vest nije bila nova, za horor fana koji drzi do sebe - nije bila nova!

Odgovor Kuncu i Pliskinu, koji su zainteresovani za Hills have Eyes: Disk sa dotičnim filmom mi je u Banjaluci, tamo idem za desetak dana, pa ćemo onda nešto iskombinovati. Inače, dotični film sam kupio od Komija, tako da možete da uzmete i od njega, ali on će vam naplatiti jedan euro

March 03, 2005 - Stax here with an exclusive review of the screenplay for The Hills Have Eyes! This remake of the 1977 cult classic, Wes Craven's sophomore directing effort, has been scripted by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur (the French thriller High Tension).

Like the original film, The Hills Have Eyes follows the Carter family as they make their way across country from Cleveland to California. The family includes patriarch "Big Bob," an ex-detective looking to start his own private security company, and wife Ethel; their oldest daughter Lynn, who is married to thirtyish telecommunications worker Doug Bukowski, and their infant Catherine; and young siblings Brenda – a hot seventeen-year-old who'd rather vacation with her friends in Cancun – and fifteen year-old prankster Bobby. Also along for the ride are the family's German Shepherds, Beauty and Beast, and a pair of a parakeets.

The Carters, traveling in a Chevy SUV pulling a trailer home, stop for gas in a remote stretch of mine country in the New Mexico desert. A hard-drinking old codger runs the decrepit station, which has an adjacent store that seems to haven't been open for business in years. It's during this Act One sojourn at the gas station that we get to know the characters.

Big Bob is a conservative gun owner, while Doug is a liberal city dweller totally out of his element. Doug wishes he'd never come on the trip – which coincides with Bob and Ethel's 25th anniversary – telling Lynn that he suspects her family doesn't like him. Despite his wife's reply to the contrary, Doug might not be entirely wrong. It is during the course of this misadventure that Doug will be forced to prove himself.

We soon realize that the Carters are being spied on by some unseen (and unsavory) figures. Looking for a shortcut to get back to the highway, Bob unwisely heeds the advice of the old gas station attendant and takes them off-road and down a dirt trail that cuts through the rocky hills. Obviously, the family is destined for trouble.

After their vehicle is badly damaged in an accident, the Carters find themselves stranded in this lunar-like wasteland. The metal in the hills – they're in mining country, remember – prevents them from using either their cell phones or the C/B radio. That leaves them but one choice: somebody has to hike back to the gas station for help. This trek forces Big Bob and Doug to spend time together.


It doesn't take long for the Carters to encounter trouble. While searching for Beauty (who, like Beast, senses trouble nearby), Bobby encounters a meek, simple-minded fourteen-year-old girl named Ruby. With the exception of her unusually large eyes, Ruby seems normal ... until Bobby sees her hands.

I'm going to tread more carefully from here on for the sake of SPOILERS. Needless to say, people inhabit these hills. For those of you who are familiar with the Craven film, you know where this is going. For those who aren't, it turns out there is a family of cannibalistic mutants preying on unfortunate passersby.

In addition to Ruby, this cannibal kinfolk include Papa Jupe, Goggle, Cyst, Pluto, Lizard, and more. They make the crazy crackers in Deliverance seem like Merchant Ivory characters. They systematically target the Carters, killing several of them and absconding with baby Catherine. Doug must obviously get her back but how far will he devolve in order to defeat these barbaric brutes?

I was surprised at how engrossed I became in this script. I expected very little from it but, like the recent remake of Dawn of the Dead, I found The Hills creepy and thrilling enough to recommend (even to non-horror fans).

The story works because, despite its preposterous villains and rather contrived premise, the family of protagonists are so average and identifiable. While the Carters may be thinly drawn, I understood what they represent – Civilization vs. Savagery – and cared what happened to them.

Doug, a modern urbanite faced with physical (and sometimes even mechanical) challenges that he is unprepared for, is the character the audience is supposed to identify with most. His downward trajectory mirrors the deformed and depraved state of the villains he must destroy in order to rescue his baby.

I'm a fan of horror and adventure films where a "civilized" hero is thrust into a foreboding wilderness and, in order to defeat the beasts he encounters, must devolve to a primal state so I became absorbed in this man vs. man-eating mutant yarn. The Hills do indeed have eyes – some very big ones, it turns out – and, if Aja directs with as much skill as I understand he has in High Tension, The Hills should enjoy a helluva feeding frenzy at the box office.

Dobra vest:  Nova BRDA su tako napeta i krvava da ih MPAA dao NC-17. Krejven dodaje: "It's intense. Very intense. The attack on the trailer in my film was horrible, but it was over fairly fast. This one goes on almost ten full minutes. It's fairly faithful to the original, but Alex added other things that also make it worse, what's happening to these people. It's protracted. It's a long, slow process rather than being a chaotic, relatively fast process. It's just too much for people that have to rate it, by a mile."
Loša vest: film mora da se iseče kako bi se dobila oznaka R.
Krejven kaže: "It's a very strong picture and we're trying to figure out what to do with that, without ruining it. We have to deliver an R rating. We looked at it last night in the screening room and before we started, we said to Alex 'what do you think?' And he said 'this is a PG-13 now'. And one of our producers said 'Alex, can we commit you to an insane asylum if this isn't an R?' and then he showed it to us and ohmigod, there's no way you would get an R for that."
Znači: u bioskopskoj verziji će biti obilnog sečenja, a pri tome ne mislim na napad mutanata.

dobar film, ali stvarno nista specijalno/novo.. ajd da ne kazem bas vec vidjeno, ali vrlo blizu

kao prvo, sve vreme sam se pitala zasto se film zove kako se zove... cak i na kraju ostade mi isto pitanje.. imho, naziv filma prilicno glupo stoji samom filmu

drugo, mutanti su apsolutno neoriginalni....

i trece, neke scene su previse kratko trajale dok su neke previse razvucene.. dinamiku filma su malo ujebali

osim toga, sve ostalo sasvim solidno.... malkice podseca na The Devil's Rejects koji mi se ipak mnoooogo vise svideo nego The Hills...

i nije mi jasno otkud tolika inspiracija u poslednje vreme za horor filmove iz jedne te iste price: oni krenu na put, zalutaju u nekoj nedodjiji i onda bivaju zrtve...... dosadilo mi vise bre.... gimme something fuckin' new!

mamba, daj ne skači i ne sudi i ne lupaj pre nego što bar malkice razmisliš.

niko ovde ne 'sudi' o filmu na osnovu njegove zarade.

pare koje je zaradio bitan su podatak za ljubitelje samo zbog ovoga: u svetu filmskog biznisa -vrlo skupog, mind you- vrlo je bitno da režiser za koga navijaš uspe i na komercijalnom planu, jer to osigurava da će ga producenti i nadalje angažovati, i štaviše, srazmerno uspehu koji postigne daće mu još slobodnije ruke da radi šta hoće.

konkretno, aža je -bar za mene- najbitniji debitant u horor žanru još od pojave giljerma del tora (govorim o zapadnjacima, da ne ubacujem japance i koreance u ovu čorbu).
držim mu palčeve.
navijam za njega.
verujem u njega - na osnovu kredita koji je stekao izvanrednim, predivnim HAUTE TENSION.

a kada vidim da njegov film odlično prolazi na box office-u, to me beskrajno raduje, jer to znači: MORE WORK FOR A. AJA= MORE PLEASURES FOR HORROR FANS.

vrednosni sudovi i procene sa finansijskim podacima nemaju nikakve veze i ti si ih sama isprojektovala.
da li je HILLS dobar, odličan ili slab film - videćemo kad vidimo.
za sada se samo radujemo što postiže bar ovu vrstu uspeha (a ako pogledaš tomatometer videćeš da mu je i kritika prilično naklonjena).

mislim da ni tebi niti ikome ne treba da objašnjavam koliko malo veze komercijalna prođa ima sa kvalitetima filma - pa jebote, mamba, njegov prethodni, izvanredni film je PUKAO na USA blagajnama (zbog slabe reklame, jer je pola filma bilo na francuskom, itd. itd.) - kad bi neko ovde SUDIO na osnovu toga, mi bi svi trebalo da kenjamo po tom filmu.

vidiš li da to neko radi?

ja ne.

hmm, ok, agree... ajde i meni je drago sto The Hills skuplja tolike $$$, ali mislim da je to nepravda u odnosu na Haute Tension koji se bas i ne moze porediti sa ovim filmom, mislim po kvalitetu i prici... HT mi je [i dalje] mnogo bolji.. ovo je dakle samo moje licno misljenje, i zato mislim da su tu komercijalne stvari umesale prste

For those who didn't like High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes is Aja's redemption. For those who did like that film, The Hills Have Eyes is your vindication for supporting him. He's truly one of the new masters of horror, a stunning visionary force to be reckoned with. Whatever he does next, I need to see it.
