Just when you've had it up to here with the latest watered-down horror remake, old-school gore maestro Frank Henenlotter (of BASKET CASE and FRANKENHOOKER infamy) returns to the low-budget sexploitation horror scene after 15 years with a twisted new feature, BAD BIOLOGY, which plants itself definitively outside of the mainstream. The story follows a young man and women who separately indulge their most lurid biological desires, pushing the envelope in their quest for sexual fulfillment. When they finally meet, their perversions kick into overdrive, resulting in the growth of a creature so anatomically repulsive, Henenlotter wonders if FANGORIA will be able to print photos ("Even though you'll want to," he teases).

Principal photography for BAD BIOLOGY took place in an empty 22-room yellow mansion in Brooklyn, which was built in 1854 and once owned by an eccentric cult preacher named Father Divine. Produced by rapper and rabid horror-movie fan R.A. "The Rugged Man" Thornburn (who co-wrote the script with Henenlotter), the film stars newcomers Anthony Sneed and Charlee Danielson and features an original score by Grammy winner Prince Paul.

And what's it like returning to the genre he knows and loves? Henenlotter knows the deal. "Not enough time, not enough money and we almost set the location on fire, but what else is new?" he says. Despite the limited budget, this production opted for 35mm film over hi-def video, and flew in frequent Henenlotter collaborator Gabe Bartalos to handle the special makeup FX.

"My first film with him was BRAIN DAMAGE, followed by BASKET CASE 2 and 3," Bartalos recalls. "You see some filmmakers mellow out over time, but not Frank. Like a fine wine, he's getting weirder with each film." While the creature itself is top-secret, Bartalos describes multiple incarnations, such as a "giant diseased version" and an "angry cobra version," but in terms of specifics he can only say, "I've never done a film where I've had to cover up so many things in my studio."

Since they couldn't afford CGI, Henenlotter is pleased to report that instead they're taking BAD BIOLOGY into that "low-budget realm where most people enjoy going: bad taste. On top of that, it's sexual bad taste. While we're not going for T&A, this project definitely has an edge. At first, it seems like we're doing one of those arty-type independent films, but suddenly it takes a turn, and you'll see we have not forgotten our roots. It's total B-movie schlock all the way, with one beautiful girl getting attacked after another, and I love it. If I'm going to make another movie, I want to do something that hasn't been made before." BAD BIOLOGY is currently in postproduction, with SHATTER DEAD/16 TONGUES filmmaker Scooter McCrae serving as editor—"so in addition to me," Henenlotter says, "BAD BIOLOGY features two other horror directors, Mr. Scoot and Gabe! BANGALORE, India - Doctors in southern India completed a grueling 24-hour operation Wednesday on a girl born with four arms and four legs that surgeons said will give the 2-year-old a chance at a normal life.

The surgery went "wonderfully well," said Dr. Sharan Patil, who led a team of more than 30 surgeons in performing the marathon procedure to remove Lakshmi's extra limbs, salvage her organs and rebuild her pelvis area.

"This girl can now lead as good a life as anyone else," Patil said from a hospital in the southern Indian city of Bangalore.

Lakshmi, who has been revered by some in her village as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, was born joined at the pelvis to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in her mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

"This is a very rare occurrence," said Dr. Doug Miniati a pediatric surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the surgery. Miniati said the surgery was extremely complicated but her chances of survival were greater because she was not joined at the heart or brain.

The doctors worked through the night to remove the extra limbs and organs. By midnight, a team of neurologists had separated the fused spines while orthopedic surgeons removed most of the "parasite," carefully identifying which organs and internal structures belonged to the girl, said Patil.

Then began the difficult job of reconstructing Lakshmi's lower body.

The operation included transplanting a good kidney into Lakshmi from the twin. The team also used tissue from the twin to help rebuild the pelvic area, one of the most complicated parts of the surgery, Patil said.

"Beyond our expectations, the reconstruction worked wonderfully well," Patil said. "We were able to bring the pelvic bones together successfully, which takes away the need for another procedure," he said.

However, she will have to have further treatments and possible surgery for clubbed feet before she would be able to walk, he said.

Lakshmi's parents, who were expected to see their daughter later Wednesday, said they were very relieved.

"It will be great to see our daughter have a normal body," her father Shambhu, who only goes by one name, told reporters. "We were worried for her future."

Children born with deformities in deeply traditional rural parts of India, like the remote village in the northern state of Bihar that Lakshmi hails from, are often viewed as reincarnated gods. The young girl is no different — she is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth.

Others sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.

Her mother, who is currently pregnant with a healthy fetus, was "overwhelmed," Patil said.

Doctors at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore said they were performing the surgery, which they estimated cost $625,000, for free because the girl's family could not afford the medical bills.

"We are very grateful to all the doctors for seeing our plight and deciding to help us," Shambhu said.

Doctors at the hospital have said that Lakshmi was popular among staff and patients.

"She's a very cute girl," hospital spokeswoman Dr. Patil Mamatha said. "She's very playful and gets along well with others."

Returning to feature directing after a decade and a half of absence, Frank Henenlotter is back to screw up whatever ideas you had about where horror could go. Mixing loads of gore, sexual allegories that would make a young Cronenberg blush and a sense of humour that's so tongue in cheek it will make your gums bleed, Bad Biology marks a peak in a career of high points.

Henenlotter has joined forces with white rapper extraordinaire R.A. The Rugged Man to produce a movie that basically stars a vagina and a penis, both of them murderous misfits, that are bound to find each other. The main players of this "godawful love story" happen to be attached to young Jennifer – a photographer with a raging metabolism that makes her kill lovers at the peak of orgasm and give birth to mutant babies within two hours of conception – and Batz – a man who's entire existence revolves around getting drugs for his junkie penis and trying to keep it under control.

Joining acting debutants Charlee Danielson and Anthony Sneed are an array of the producer's hip hop friends, including Prince Paul who made most of the impressive soundtrack (don't worry about this being some stupid Snoop Dogg horror movie. The music works and helps), and a host of porn stars who use every single opportunity to get naked. Not surprisingly, considering we're talking Henenlotter, the movie is neither as stupid, nor as messy as it sounds. Instead the wonderfully ridiculous premise is used as offset for a bizarre, ironic and extremely funny film that comments post-modern sexuality and delivers gore and nudity in spades. Hell yeah, it's exploitation cinema, but with equal emphasis on both words.

It's a flare for storytelling and rhythm, as well as technical understanding that sets Henenlotter's work apart from most of the American low-budget horror-scene. Shooting in glorious 35mm (with the understanding that shooting on film means you have to light your set – take that Nick Palumbo) and making good use of locations, Henenlotter weaves his story with a confidence and professionalism that you normally wouldn't associate with a film that features vagina-masks and heavy masturbation-machinery. The result is a film that's as way out as they come, as ridiculously entertaining and imaginative as you could ever hope for and with a window open for analysis.

Following Mitchell Lichtensteins Teeth, but taking the premise and the irony to outrageous new levels, this is a film that works on all levels. As a serious scholar, you can call this an allegory on modern day sexual predators, a comment on post-feminism or even a film about puberty (ok, that last one's a bit far fetched) – point is, Henenlotter leaves it open for interpretation. Even the religious jokes are well thought out and result in a brilliant ending that I'm still laughing just thinking about. On a more down to earth level, Bad Biology is simply the most entertaining gore film I've seen in a very long time. It's Teeth on steroids, The Necro Files with a budget (and a point), Shivers with a very wicked sense of humour. In other words, it's a must see.

Evo jednog solidnog rivjua koji samo potvrđuje ono što smo znali i prije, a to je da će ovo nesumnjivo remek-djelo potpuno da oduva sve tzv. horore koji budu imali nesreću da se pojave tokom sljedeće godine. Ako zanemarimo one nigere što repuju, nema šanse da nešto pođe po zlu.

Pošto Ghoula i Plisskena više nema, ostao sam ja kao posljednji bastion voršipovanja nesumnjivog genija koji je Frenk Henenloter. Pokaži im, Frenče!!!

e pa fala elmeru da imam čime da prekratim mučne časove iskušenja jer bojim se da je pitanje sata kada ću da podlegnem svojoj krhkoj volji i ipak ogledam martirke, bez titla, pa nek ide život!

Iz poštovanja prema Maestru, ja sam već rezervisao originalni DVD na Amazonu  

Inače, već ove sličice nam pokazuju zašto bi Kronenberg, Karpenter, Romero i još poneki trebalo duboko da se poklone pred Henenloterom - čovjek 15+ godina ne snimi nijedan film i onda se odjednom pojavi sa nečim što izgleda triput luđe od svega što je radio prije. Samo se nadam da ovaj film neće biti lišen njegovog karakterističnog humora. Body horror je, vidim, već tu. Njam njam!

Ne bih da kvarim zabavu - ali moram.

Mada definitivno ima svojih trenutaka, BB je film koji bi mogao da prođe kao srednji metar::: u ovom obliku ima previše praznog hoda i razvlačenja da bi se uživalo u potpunosti.

Prvih 15-20 minuta su prilično obećavajući, podsećaju na raspevaniju varijantu sleeper hita TEETH od pre koju godinu (da, to je onaj film o curici koja ubija vaginom), ali se onda polako klizi u vode jeftine trash zabave. U poslednjoj trećini BB konceptom (i na žalost realizacijom, tj. super lošim specijalnim efektima) uspeva da podseti na onu neuspešnu rekreaciju Russa Meyera PERVERT! To nije kompliment!

Krajnji rezultat je neobična mešavina, ali uz ozbiljno skraćivanje (na pola, recim) dobili bismo prilično dobru priču u nekom tanatos/eros omnibusu.

Seksa ima dosta, kao i sisa, Truba će zatrubeti od sreće, ali veoma malo horora... Iskreno, očekivao sam nešto bolje.

...iako neadekvatnog metra, BB nudi dovoljno povoda za radost poklonika - ima par urnebesnih scena, blago genijalnih rešenja, funkcioniše na nivou visokog koncepta, u okviru teksta ima par bravura, da se iščitavati i kao politično ostvarenje... a ishitrenost i traljavost u izvođenju se nekako od F.H. i očekuju, tako da u krajnjem skoru - vredi gledalačkog vremena i truda.

Killah Priest није црнац?Хм, мени изгледа прилично црначки на коверима албума...За R.A. The Rugged Man једино овде 100% сигуран да је белчуга, његов спот, судећи по овим сликама из филма, одлично одговара ово филму(хорорични пенис, гађање изметом, вађење сопственог мозга итд.)

Meni je BAd Biology sasvim ok film. Treba svakako imati smisla za humor i uzeti u obzir da ovo ocigledno nije ozbiljan film, da je u pitanju totalna zajebancija, da autori filma ocigledno ni sebe kao autore ni film ne uzimaju za ozbiljno i da je u pitanju sasvim prihvatljiva zezancija na racun svega i svacega. Iako su efekti zaista zastareli i ponegde bas ocajni (tehnika snimi-pomeri-snimi???), filmic je skroz prihvatljiv kao zabavno popodnevno opustanje, odlicna parodija i solidan humor, ali tesko da se moze svrstati u horor. Stavila bih ga u rang solidne sprdacine.
Zabavno zezanje, ali ni u kom slucaju horor...
