Actually the phrase was Tolkein-esque. I was flattered that they spelled my name right at any rate! I had a long talk with the Weitz brothers before agreeing to them doing the Elric stories and what I want to do is produce stories for the screen which are true to the originals in all essentials but not slavish attempts to put the original books on screen. In other words, this is my chance to tighten up the originals and give them an improved dynamic as I see it. I do have a co-producer function and will be working closely with the Weitz brothers and whoever is finally chosen to write the script. I'm pretty confident that the screen version will be a decent complement to the book versions. I shall have input at all stages. My guess is that if a decent director isn't found the Weitz brothers will direct it themselves. At the moment we're all content to be producers! I certainly wouldn't want to see a travesty similar to that made of The Final Programme, which effectively stopped me writing for a year! I like the Weitz brothers and their team a lot and honestly can't see too many serious problems ahead. Not sure

war movies, but I'm not sure Elric can beat that, or indeed the Arnie S pictures of the 80s. Of course I am still trying to work out how a soul drinking sword can be managed tastefully...
