Rumours Steele (real name Petrus Ratajczyk) had died began circulating on the internet on Wednesday (April 14) and were confirmed by the band the same day.

Type O Negative keyboardist Mistress Juliya (real name Juliya Chernetsky) tweeted that Steele passed Wednesday and had confirmed his death with Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey.

"I loved my friend...our idol...my heart is with his band and family...," she wrote.

Type O Negative were expected to make a statement about Steele's death on Thursday.

Tributes to Steele, who was a towering six-foot seven-inches, began pouring in after his death was announced. Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld called Steele his "single biggest musical influence," pointing out Steele named his band.

"I fucking miss you so much already... I love you, brother. I hope you are in a better place," he tweeted.

Connecticut hardcore band Hatebreed also issued a statement about Steele's death.

"He is one of the best guys we've ever toured with and a true legend!" they said. "There will NEVER be anyone else like him. May he rest in peace."

Steele formed thrash/hardcore crossover band Carnivore in 1982 after his previous band, Fallout, imploded. The band released two albums before splitting up in 1987, but reunited in 2006. Unfortunately, some called some of the lyrics on 1987's Retaliation racist.

Steele continued making music Type O Negative, which he formed 1990 and released seven studio albums with the band. The band achieved cult status because of his low, bass voice, which became a trademark part of their sound. The cover for 1993's Bloody Kisses, which went platinum, was recently named Roadrunner Records' greatest cover in the label's history.

Steele faked his own death in 2005. Then, a graphic of gravestone with the inscription "[P]eter Steele - 1962-2005 .... Free At Last" was posted on the Type O Negative website, after rumours were circulating that he was sick with cancer, AIDS, had attempted suicide or was dying of some unknown illness.

It was later revealed to be a joke about the band signing to SPV after leaving Roadrunner.

Od jutros pratim eskalaciju i širenje glasina i baš nisam hteo da poverujem na osnovu jedne jedine poruke na tviteru od neke tamo osobe koja je navodno čula od klavijaturiste. A naročito mi je na njih ličilo da ponove sprdačinu iz 2005 kada su objavili da je umro. U svakom slučaju, žao mi čoveka... dobru muziku pravio.

Pazi TON su se prilicno kasno proslavili. Ako je Steele imao 48 godina kad je umro to znaci da je na ovoj fotki imao vec oko 45 sto su ozbiljne godine ...
