Sir Terry Pratchett calls for euthanasia tribunals

Author wants euthanasia tribunals to give sufferers from incurable diseases the right to medical help to end their lives

The author Sir Terry Pratchett is calling for euthanasia tribunals to give sufferers from incurable diseases the right to medical help to end their lives.

Pratchett will insist in his Dimbleby lecture, to be broadcast tonight, that "the time is really coming" for legalising assisted death.

Two polls published today back his views. Of more than 1,000 people interviewed for a BBC Panorama programme, 73% believed friends or relatives should be able to assist the suicide of a terminally ill loved one. A YouGov poll of 2,053 people for the Telegraph produced even stronger support, with 80% saying that relatives should not be prosecuted, and 75% backing a change in the law.

Pratchett, author of the bestselling Discworld fantasy novels, was diagnosed two years ago with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's disease – a discovery he memorably described, when he broke the news on the Discworld News website, as "an embuggerance".

In his lecture, Shaking Hands With Death, the author will volunteer to be a test case before a euthanasia tribunal himself.

The tribunal panels would include a legal expert in family matters and a doctor with experience of serious long-term illness.

"If granny walks up to the tribunal and bangs her walking stick on the table and says 'Look, I've really had enough, I hate this bloody disease, and I'd like to die thank you very much young man', I don't see why anyone should stand in her way."

He said there was no evidence from countries where assisted dying is allowed of granny being coerced into dying so relatives could get their hands on her money.

"Choice is very important in this matter. But there will be some probably older, probably wiser GPs, who will understand. The tribunal would be acting for the good of society as well as that of the applicant – and ensure they are of sound and informed mind, firm in their purpose, suffering from a life-threatening and incurable disease and not under the influence of a third party.

"If I knew that I could die, I would live. My life, my death, my choice."

His lecture comes a week after Kay Gilderdale was cleared of attempted murder for helping her 31-year-old daughter, Lynn, to commit suicide following years of suffering from the chronic fatigue syndrome ME.

However, days earlier Frances Inglis, who killed her 22-year-old son by heroin injection believing he was left in a "living hell" after severe brain damage in a road accident, was found guilty of murder and sentenced by majority verdict to a minimum of nine years in jail.

Pratchett is the first novelist invited to deliver the annual BBC lecture, the 34th in honour of the veteran broadcaster Richard Dimbleby.

He has already criticised the existing law and the risk faced by any relatives who help a family member to die of being charged with murder.

Of his own Alzheimer's, he said: "It is not nice and I do not wish to be there for the endgame." He is a patron of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, and has donated £500,000 of his own money for research.

"I don't think people are particularly bothered about death, it's the life before death that worries us," he said in a recent BBC television interview.
"Realism is a literary technique no longer adequate for the purpose of representing reality."

Veštice me baš nisu impresionirale.

Terry Pratchett and Martin Amis each received an Award for Outstanding Achievement at the Galaxy National Book Awards held in London on November 10, 2010. These awards honor their "unrivalled contribution to the publishing industry."

Commenting on his win, Pratchett said, "I'm amazed. You find something that you like doing, and do well, and keep on doing it, and suddenly they give you an award when all I really was doing was having lots of fun."

U Petom slonu glavne uloge igraju patuljci, diplomatija, spletke i ogromne gromuljice sala.

Elves Were Bastards
I'm called a writer of fantasy, but I'm coming to hate the term. Why? Because what could be so good is often so bad. Because there's so much trash out there, so much round-eyed worship of mind-numbing myths, so much mindless recycling of ancient cycles, so much unthinking escapism.
I'm not against recycling. The seasons do it. So do pantomimes, so do fairy stories. The retelling of oft-told tales is an honourable art—but there should be some attempt at texture and flair. Star Wars was the quintessential heroic fantasy story, with just enough twist and spin to give it an extra edge. Robocop retold an ancient tale in a new voice and was marvellous;
Robocop II was superexpensive trash because people didn't understand what they'd got.
Unfortunately, there's still a market for rubbish. I picked up a recently-written fantasy book at the weekend, and one character said of another: "He will grow wrath." Oh, my God. And the phrase was in a page of similar jaw-breaking, mock-archaic narrative. Belike, i'faith ... this is the language we use to turn high fantasy into third-rate romantic literature. "Yonder lies the palace of my fodder, the king." That's not fantasy—that's just Tolkien reheated until the magic boils away.
I get depressed with these fluffy dragons and noble elves. Elves were never noble. They were cruel bastards. And I dislike heroes. You can't trust the buggers. They always let you down. I don't believe in the natural nobility of kings, because a large percentage of them in our history have turned out to be powercrazed idiots. And I certainly don't believe in the wisdom of wizards. I've worked with their modern equivalents, and I know what I am talking about.
Fantasy should present the familiar in a new light—I try to do that on Discworld. It's a way of looking at the here and now, not the there and then. Fantasy is the Ur-literature, from which everything else sprang—which is why my knuckles go white when toesucking literary critics dismiss it as "genre trash". And, at its best, it is truly escapist.
But the point about escaping is that you should escape to, as well as from. You should go somewhere worthwhile, and come back the better for the experience. Too much alleged "fantasy" is just empty sugar, life with the crusts cut off.
I'm writing this in Florida, home of fantasy—either the soft that you watch, or the sort that you stick up your nose. They've got some weird stuff here; for one thing, they've got Disney/MGM and Universal Studios.
And this is what's weird about them. They aren't really studios. Oh, they shoot some film here, but that's kind of secondary. They weren't built as studios. They were built as ... well, as theme parks. Those false frontages, those artful backlots, those false perspective streets, they were built for no other purposes than to look like something which in turn was built to look like something. Built to look like something that isn't real.
Whoever would have thought it?
Here in America—and in England, to a lesser extent—you can read newspaper articles and buy alleged books which treat the characters played by TV stars as if they were real people. The world has gone strange. You can't tell the reality from the fantasy anymore. Think I'm kidding? On the racks at the supermarket are "newspapers" like the Sun, the Midnight Star, the Weekly World News. Typical lead story: Elvis has been found alive in a UFO dredged from the Bermuda Triangle. People read this stuff. It's not even good sf. They have a vote, same as you.
This is all "escape from" stuff—the Disney rides, the elves, the stupid stories. It goes nowhere. The best stuff does take you somewhere. It takes you to a new place from which to see the world. An interest in fantasy when I was a child gave me an interest in books in general, and I found in books on astronomy and palaeontology a deep sense of wonder that not even Middle Earth could beat.
Let's not just leave here. Let's go somewhere else. And if we ran trample over some elves to do it, so much the better.

Sir Terry Pratchett Launches His Own Production Company

International bestselling author and Discworld creator Sir Terry Pratchett today launched NARRATIVIA, a new multimedia production company with exclusive worldwide rights to all of the writer's work across film, television, merchandising and digital media.

NARRATIVIA will bring the management and development of the Pratchett brand under one roof and the executive team, headed by managing director Rod Brown, and will be based in Soho London. Brown will work closely with Pratchett, and NARRATIVIA directors – Pratchett's business manager Rob Wilkins and the author's daughter and fellow writer, Rhianna Pratchett – on a day-to-day basis, to drive the company forward.

NARRATIVIA is already working on a number of Pratchett-related television and film projects, with high profile production partners and script writers, details of which will be announced in due course.

NARRATIVIA will ensure that projects stay true to the author's intelligent and empathetic vision, while diversifying into the formats that will introduce the work, both old and new, to new territories and audiences.

Sir Terry Pratchett said, "This is an exciting and natural development for me and my works, and I look forward to working closely with the team to develop new stories in areas other than just print and ebooks and, of course, seeing my first Big Screen project come to fruition."

Rod Brown said, "This is a dream challenge for me! Having worked very happily with Terry, Rob and Rhianna over the past decade on the three mini series for Sky 1, I have grown to love the world and characters Terry has created so when Terry invited me to head up the company for him, it was easy to say yes... please!"

Rob Brown was, of course, helping Sir Terry develop The Watch for TV (see video below) so we can probably guess what one the first projects to be announced might be...

Pratchett announces new DISCWORLD book    Terry Pratchett has announced that the next Discworld book, likely to be out at the end of this year, will be entitled Raising Steam. He made the announcement via a Skype webchat.

Pratchett announced the book by holding up a card saying "RAISING", at which point the Skype connection cut out. Pratchett had previously announced that the next Moist von Lipwig novel would be called Raising Taxes, so fans immediately assumed it was going to be that. However, it was then clarified that the book would actually be called Raising Steam. It has no release date as yet, and no further details have been announced.

Speculation: given Pratchett's way of announcing the book, which was clearly teasing fans curious about the long-MIA Raising Taxes, I'd guess this was indeed the new Moist von Lipwig book. Pratchett had previously said that he was having difficulty making the tax-based book interesting. This is understandable, given that Making Money - Moist takes over the Ankh-Morpork Mint - was fairly close to being a retread of Going Postal - Moist takes over the Ankh-Morpork Postal Service - as it was. I would guess (and to stress this is guesswork) that Pratchett has taken Moist out of the tax office and put him in charge of the Undertaking, Ankh-Morpork's under-construction subway system. This also allows Pratchett to do the 'Undertaking book' he's been hinting at for a few novels in a row now.

Of course, this might be in error and Raising Steam could be about surface trains or even an outright steampunk satire, and not involve Moist at all. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Mislim da svi fanovi Terija Pračeta bojkotuju tu seriju. Odgledao sam prvu epizodu.
