1915, Eastern front, Galicia. Croatian soldiers under the Austro-Hungarian flag wage a war against the Russian army and a gang of Cherkez. An Austro-Hungarian soldier, wounded and robbed, wakes up in the battlefield. He puts on another man's officer uniform and with it he accidentally takes over a new identity in the form of an army tag. He becomes sergeant Josef and begins his journey across the war-torn foreign land. Josef is captured by the unit of the lieutenant Tiffenbach, who doubts his identity and takes him to be shot...

Stanislav Tomić (1972) graduated in film and TV directing at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. He made over 40 documentaries including, Graditelj brodova (2007), Delta (2006) and Noć kristala (2005). He directed the short live action film Promašaj (2001, Jelena Rajković Award) and a one-hour live action film Otac (2005) and afterwards several TV series, including Dobre namjere. His films have been screened at numerous festivals, in Sarajevo, Motovun, Tehran, Oberhausen, Edinbirgh, Munich, Siena, Warsaw, Trieste... Josef (2011) is his first feature narrative.
