PTY

Famed US author Ray Bradbury on Monday told the Los Angeles Times that this country needs a "revolution" and that he gets burned up by the idea of his works going digital. Bradbury, author of "The Martian Chronicles" in which colonists from a devastated Earth encounter natives on Mars, lashed out at President Barack Obama for not backing development a moon base to be used to "fire off a rocket to Mars".

"Then when we do that, we will live forever," he told The Times, before going on to complain about the growth of government in the United States. "I think our government needs a revolution. There is too much government today," he said.

Bradbury also bridled at the spread of modern technology, saying: "We have too many cellphones. We've got too many Internets. We have got to get rid of those machines. We have too many machines now."

The author of "Fahrenheit 451", which depicted a US future in which critical thought was banned and books burned, told the Times he had rebuffed proposals to convert his written works into digital formats to be read on devices like Amazon.com's Kindle or the Apple iPad.
"I was approached three times during the last year by Internet companies wanting to put my books on an electronic reading device", he said.

"I said to Yahoo, 'Prick up your ears and go to hell.' "

Bradbury is being celebrated in Los Angeles with a week dedicated to him to mark his 90th birthday on August 22.

Asian technology companies came under pressure to slash prices of their tablet computers after Amazon.com launched its Kindle Fire at a mass market-friendly $199. From Samsung Electronics to Sony Corp , major Asian tablet makers have ambitious plans to take on Apple, whose iPad is the gold standard in the booming market.

With their me-too type of products priced almost at the same level as the iPad's starting price of $499, none of them have however been able to gain any significant market share from Apple.

So far, Samsung has been seen as the most credible challenger to the iPad and some analysts suggest it could lose its No. 2 position to the eagerly anticipated Fire.

The South Korean company's tablet marketing campaign has also stumbled in recent months due to Apple's legal attempts to ban Samsung's tablet sales in Australia, the United States and Germany, over patent infringement, among other claims.

The Kindle Fire, while lacking many of the high-tech bells and whistles common on tablets from cameras to 3G wireless connection, may sound the death knell for a raft of devices based on Google Inc's Android operating system.

"The pricing is critical to gain traction in the tablet market... Rival manufacturers have failed to attract consumers as they have matched the iPad's price point without matching its content offering," said Adam Leach, an analyst at research firm Ovum.

"Amazon's retail-based business model allows the company to subsidize the device on the premise that consumers will buy more from Amazon, be that physical goods or its digital content."

Samsung's Galaxy Tab, Sony's S tablet, Motorola's  Zoom and many others from Acer Inc and Asustek Computer Inc all run on Android, which Amazon's Fire also uses and combines with its online store.

By pricing the Fire at less than half the iPad — yet stripping out costlier components and features — the Internet retailer hopes to get the device into millions of consumers' hands and then into Amazon books, movies, music and other content.

PTY

Tough for Samsung

Samsung's new tablet Galaxy 10,1 is priced roughly the same as the iPad. Even at that price, a slim profit margin of around 5% makes it difficult for Samsung to cut prices sharply, analysts say.

Worldwide tablet shipments will more than triple to 60 million units this year and surge to 275,3 million units by 2015, research firm IHS iSuppli forecasts.

Apple dominates the North American tablet market, with 80% of the 7,5 million units shipped during the second quarter of 2011, Strategy Analytics says.

Analysts had expected Amazon's tablet to be priced around $250, roughly half the price of Apple's iPad, which starts at $499.

Sony vowed in January to become the world's No. 2 tablet maker — behind Apple — by 2012 and Sony executives have since stuck to that ambitious claim.

"We expect the Amazon tablet to... put pressure on the other non-iPad competitors as they are unlikely to be able to compete on price and value," UBS analysts said in a note.
"At the $199, we believe Amazon's tablet has the potential to be disruptive to the market and, in particular, the non-iPad market...Other tablet vendors will find it difficult to match Amazon's price point."

HP's firesale of its TouchPad tablet at $99 just six weeks after its launch created strong demand for its soon-to-be-killed product, a sign of just how critical prices are in the sector.

Why shouldn't things be largely absurd, futile, and transitory? They are so, and we are so, and they and we go very well together.

Nightflier

Radije ću kupiti dva najobičnija kindla, pošto će me to koštati taman onoliko para koliko sam spremio za jednu vaj-faj kindl trojku.

The Kindle Fire is the iPad

OCTOBER 8, 2011 BY JOE : ANDGEEKS - ANDROID NEWS AND REVIEWS

Even a week after its announcement, it sounds as thought the Kindle Fire buzz is still running strong. They have more than 250,000 pre-orders right now, and with a November 15th release date they'll surely add to that number. The Fire will undoubtedly top any Android tablet launch to date by a significant margin — despite it not being your typical Android tablet. Which brings me to a question for those in the tablet market: Are you more apt to pick up the Fire or a more traditional Android tablet?

The general population, it appears, has chosen the Fire. This is based not only on pre-sales, but also on survey data. People say they're more willing to buy a tablet from Amazon than from any other non-Apple manufacturer. Not only that, an overwhelming number of people said they'd buy an Android tablet rather than the iPad if the price were below $250. It seems that Amazon hit all the right notes when announcing the Fire. Without a true low-cost competitor, they could take the lion's share of the Android tablet market share.

At the same time, the Fire is not your typical Android tablet. Yes, the operating system, at its core, is Android. But the Fire represents Amazon far more than it represents Android. The divide between the two sets up a tough choice for consumers. Get the more restricted tablet with the integrated Amazon services, or get the general purpose Android tablet?

Before making a decision — or even after making a decision, since you haven't yet purchased the Fire — there is one overarching point to keep in mind.

The Kindle Fire is the iPad

On the surface they couldn't be more different. It starts with screen size and goes right through software and price. If you examined only the superficial aspects of each device you'd probably place the Fire and the iPad on opposite ends of the spectrum. It's only after you examine the essence of the product that you'll see that they're similar in nature.

The iPad thrives on the Apple ecosystem. Apps come from the App Store, and most of them cost money. They're also heavily screened, so you'll never find certain app types — e.g., GPS spoofers — in the App Store. Apple keeps close watch. Video and music come from the iTunes Store. You can load your own music and video, but it has to be in a certain format, and it has to sideload through iTunes. You can charge it only with Apple's unique adapter. There are some outside entities that Apple lets in (you can read your Kindle books through the Kindle app), but it is for the most part Apple's device through and through.

The Fire will operate in a nearly identical manner. You don'y buy apps from the Android Market; you buy apps from the Amazon App Store. You buy media from the Amazon MP3 store, and you upload that media to the cloud via Amazon's storage locker. Want to watch Netflix? Not happening. Instead you'll stream Amazon Instant video — which, of course, requires you pay Amazon $80 per year for Prime. Ordering products? It goes through Amazon, of course. Reading a book? That's Amazon, too. You didn't expect a device called the Kindle to handle your Nook titles, did you? The entire concept of the Fire is based on the Android ecosystem.

There are ups and downs to this model. Obviously Android geeks will not appreciate the Fire's restrictiveness. Again, it's like Apple using Android, which will not sit well with those who choose Android as an alternative to Apple. At the same time, this restrictiveness allows Amazon to offer the Fire at an attractive price. Yes, it might function in a manner similar to the iPad, but it costs $300 less. Surely that's one mitigating aspect of the Fire. Amazon can offer it at this price point precisely because of its integrated services. Yes, Amazon will lose about $10 on every Fire unit, and that number jumps a bit when you factor in marketing and other expenses. They can justify this because they control the flow of content on the device.

The restrictive nature of the Fire will likely turn the more nuanced Android user towards a true Android tablet. We've seen a few of these launched in the last year, though none has made much of a dent in the tablet market. This might be more of a marketing thing than a usefulness thing. Sure, there are dozens of Android tablets on the market that provide no real value for the user; either they're running inadequate software or they lack durability. That's what happens when any manufacturer can spit out a tablet running a royalty free operating system. But with the focus of the mobile world slowly shifting towards tablets, some Android player has to step up.

Later this month we'll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab try its hand again. This was the original Android tablet, though it flopped about as badly as anyone could have imagined. The new version, which will up the stakes with a 10.1-inch screen, will launch with T-Mobile on October 26th. There have been many instances where we've heard pundits exclaim that some tablet or other is the real deal, but few had adequate backing. Samsung has some momentum, though, from its impressive Galaxy S II series — and especially the upcoming Galaxy Nexus announcement. Perhaps that momentum will go a long way in pushing Galaxy Tabs out the door.

Yet I have to wonder if there is an adequate market for these tabs. The general population, it appears, prefers the restrictiveness that Apple and Amazon impose on their devices. Is there any room left for a more open tablet? We'll find out in a few months, when sales spike during the holiday season. The Galaxy Tab will certainly be front and center for the traditional Android crew. But can it overcome a marketplace that has to this point shunned its type? That could be tough, especially with the Fire posing as an Android tablet.
