FINALISTS: 2014 Prometheus Hall of Fame Award

The Prometheus Awards — recognizing outstanding works of science fiction and fantasy that stress the importance of liberty as the foundation for civilization, peace, prosperity, progress, and justice — have announced the fianlists for the 2014 Prometheus Hall of Fame:

•"As Easy as A.B.C." – a short story by Rudyard Kipling published in London Magazine in 1912, presents an ambiguously utopian future that has reacted against mass society (which was beginning to emerge during Kipling's day) in favor of privacy and freedom of movement.

•"Sam Hall" – a short story by Poul Anderson published in Astounding Science Fiction in 1953, depicts a regimented future America obsessed with security and facing a libertarian revolution aided by cybernetic subversion.

•"'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman" – a short story by Harlan Ellison published in Galaxy in 1965, is a dystopian satire set in an authoritarian society dedicated to punctuality, in which a lone absurdist rebel attempts to disrupt everyone else's schedules.

•Falling Free, a novel by Lois McMaster Bujold published in 1988, explores free will and self-ownership by considering the legal and ethical implications of human genetic engineering.

•Courtship Rite, a novel by Donald M. Kingsbury published in 1982, portrays a harsh desert planet's exotic human culture founded on applying the mathematical concept of optimization in biology, political organization, and ethics.

Robert A. Heinlein Award

For outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings to inspire the human exploration of space.

The physical form of the Robert A. Heinlein Award consists of a sterling silver medallion bearing the image of Robert A. Heinlein as seen to the left depicted by the artist Arlin Robbins. The medallion is matched with a red-white-blue lanyard. In addition the winner receives two lapel pins for use when a large medallion is impractical, and a certificate plaque designating the award suitable for home or office wall display.

The award committee consists of science fiction writers and is chaired by Dr. Yoji Kondo, a long time friend of Robert and Virginia Heinlein. Prior to 2013 the Baltimore Science Fiction Society provided logistical support for this award including processing of donations, manufacture of award materials, shipping and this webpage. Selection of winners was by a committee originally selected by Virginia Heinlein and not by BSFS as a group. As of 2013 the award is sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society and the committee members originally selected by Virginia Heinlein have joined BSFS and serve as judges in a selection committee.

Virginia Heinlein authorized multiple awards in memory of her husband. The Robert A. Heinlein Award is not the one fully funded by Virginia Heinlein's estate. This award is supported by independent donations from the interested public. To donate contact dale at bsfs dot org for details.

WINNER OF THE 2013 JAMES TIPTREE JR. AWARD ANNOUNCED

The James Tiptree, Jr. Literary Award Council (www.tiptree.org) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2013 Tiptree Award: N.A. Sulway for her novel Rupetta (Tartarus Press 2013).

The James Tiptree Jr. Award is presented annually to a work or works of science fiction or fantasy that explores and expands gender roles. The award seeks out work that is thought-provoking, imaginative, and perhaps even infuriating. It is intended to reward those writers who are bold enough to contemplate shifts and changes in gender roles, a fundamental aspect of any society.

N.A. Sulway's imaginative and highly original novel tells the story of Rupetta, an artificial intelligence created 400 years ago from cloth, leather, and metal, brought to life by the touch of her creator's hand on her clockwork heart. Although Rupetta is a constructed being, she is not a robot. Her consciousness is neither digital nor mechanical. Nor is she an android, a creature that is, etymologically, male. (The word is not gyndroid). Rupetta's power does not come from her brain, but from her heart. Sulway has placed her construct not in the future, but the past, and made her female, created with traditionally feminine technology: sewing and weaving. Rupetta is a woman, made by a woman in the image of a woman, and the world changes to accommodate her existence.

A deft blend of fantasy, science fiction, romance, and even gothic horror, this beautifully written story challenges the reader's expectations about gender and of a gendering society. It examines power and what makes an object of power, relationships and love, sexuality and identity, and how culture is shaped and history is made.

Rupetta was published by British independent publisher Tartarus Press in a limited hardback edition and a more widely available e-book version. Both are available for purchase from Tartarus's website (http://freepages.pavilion.net/tartarus/rupetta.htm).

Nike Sulway lives and writes in Queensland, Australia. Her novel The Bone Flute won the Queensland Premier's Literary Award for Best Emerging Author in 2000. Since 2007, she has been the co-director of Olvar Wood Writers Retreat, and one of the editors of Perilous Adventures, a literary magazine.

A jesi li čitala Stross-a?
Nešto od kratke forme?
Mica

PTY

Mica Milovanovic

Postala si izgleda prezahtevna...  :)

Mica

PTY

Mme Chauchat

Sve verujem i pokloniću joj zasluženu pažnju! Ona njena sjajna priča o gorilama, sad gledam, takođe je dobila Nebulu iako joj je žanrovski karakter... malo je reći, sumnjiv.

PTY

Mica

Why shouldn't things be largely absurd, futile, and transitory? They are so, and we are so, and they and we go very well together.

Naravno da nije tako. I ja se samo šalim. ZS funkcioniše ko sat.
