William Burroughs Documentary: Howard Brookner's Movie Re-Released After Decades Out Of Print (VIDEO)

In 1989, Howard Brookner died of AIDS in Manhattan. The talented "downtown" New York filmmaker was only 34 years old, although he already had three solid films under his belt: "Bloodhounds on Broadway (1989)," starring Madonna, "Robert Wilson and the Civil Wars (1987),'' and "Burroughs: The Movie (1983)."
After two decades out of print, "Burroughs: The Movie" is finally getting some attention through the work of his devoted nephew, Aaron Brookner. In a phone interview with The Huffington Post, Aaron said, "As I kid I didn't know about AIDS, so the last couple years of his life left an impression on me. When he died, it shattered the family quite a bit." His Kickstarter campaign officially launched today, to mark World AIDS Day. On December 11, a screening of the film will be held at October Gallery in London. Na današnji dan Vilijam Barouz niti je rođen, niti je umro. To je sjajan povod da baš sada široj javnosti obznanim jedan blast from the past – impresionistički mladalački nekrolog koji sam napisao povodom Barouzove smrti, takoreći u afektu, tog leta 1997. godine.

moj odgovor je: ne, nisam ni pokušavao da zavirim u te prijevode.
nisu mi pali šaka (slučajno) a namerno ih svakako ne bih ni ciljao.

Pročitao sam leze-scenario Williama S. Burroughsa THE LAST WORDS OF DUTCH SCHULTZ: A FICTION IN THE FORM OF A FILM SCRIPT. Nažalost, ovo ima svojstvo leze-scenarija utoliko što bi bilo besmisleno realizovati ga, mada ne i nemoguće, ali mu nedostaje "čitljivost" koja bi ga kvalifikovala podesnim za ovaj vid recepcije.

Paradoksalno, ovo je leze-scenario koji bi imao više svrhe kao loš film, nego kao loš rukopis, vrlo neprohodan za čitanje, što zbog arhaične i zahtevne forme scenarija kojom se Burroughs služio, što zbog istinske dramaturške svedenosti izraza koja ga lišava gotovo svih eventualnih proznih ukrasa.

Ako je Burroughs želeo da napravi simulaciju scenarija onda je u tome zaista uspeo, ali kako izgleda zaista nije imao nameru da ovo bude snimljeno, ne znam tačno na kakvog je čitaoca računao. Otud ideja Dennisa Hoppera da zaista snimi ovo kao film nije samo hir jednog protagoniste američke kontrakulture šezdesetih i sedeamdesetih, već jedini put da ovaj rukopis dobije neki smisao, barem kao muzejski avangardni film.

kupio sam knjigu priznanica koja je eksplodirala za velike pare i zažalio sam, ne pročitavši je do kraja, jer je suviše dosadna u svojim cut-up izdrkotinama.

prilično sam siguran da sam nekad, negde, javno to isto ili slično već napisao.
od svekolikog barouza, ta KARTA je meni jedina bila skroz naskroz bolno nečitljiva / nezanimljiva.

Allen had a compulsion to meet all the writers and artists he admired, and at the top of the list was the novelist Louis-Ferdinand Céline,
who was living in the lower-middle-class suburb of Meudon and was still practicing the profession of doctor as he had since his youth.

The author of Journey to the End of the Night, often mentioned as the greatest twentieth-century French novel, had narrowly missed
prison or worse for his anti-Semitic views during the war, and had in fact fled with the Nazis in 1944, first to Germany, then to Denmark,
where he spent some time in a Danish jail. Burroughs and Ginsberg thought that Céline's wartime record was despicable, but it did not
cancel the fact that he was the greatest living French novelist, and that he had been a major influence on them, with his misanthropic vision,
his ability to extract humor from the terrors of life, and his use of colloquial and ribald language. In spite of his wartime blunders, thought Burroughs,
it would have been a gross miscarriage of aesthetics not to go see him.

They called on Michel Mohrt, an editor at Gallimard, Céline's publisher, for a letter of introduction, and again did not present themselves
in a very good light, for Allen was high on cocaine, and disappeared into the bathroom every five minutes to take another snort.
Mohrt was a good sport, however, and gave them a letter, and on a sunny day in July 1958, Burroughs and Ginsberg took a bus to Meudon,
Corso having decided to stay in Paris to see a girl he was hoping to fuck.

Meudon was on the Seine, and Céline's house of reddish-brown stone was set back from the street and fenced off. When they rang the bell some
fierce-looking dogs came out barking, followed by a tall frail man with a disorderly shock of gray hair, wrapped in scarves like an old concierge in
spite of the summer heat. As Céline locked up the dogs, Allen asked, "Have they killed anybody?" Replying in English, which he spoke fluently,
having made extended journeys to England and America, Céline said, "I just take them with me to the post office, to protect me from the Jews."
He still received death threats and anonymous letters, he said, and had his hounds to guard him from fears of being hounded.
He launched into classic Céline stories of everything going wrong—the neighbors harassed him, put out poisoned meat for his dogs,
the druggist wouldn't fill his prescriptions. "La vie est pleine de surprises désagréables," he said, which Allen and Burroughs thought was not a bad summing up.

"How's your clientele?" Allen asked. "Can you make a living?" Céline shook his head and said, "Oh no, most of the people who come to doctors are middle-aged
women, and they only want to take their clothes off in front of a young man." Allen later saw that line in one of his books. Céline had reached the famous
writer's plateau, where all he has to do is quote himself.

They sat in a little courtyard behind the house and listened to Céline embark on a rambling monologue, full of odd stops and starts and non sequiturs,
like his prose style. He hated the Danes, they were an awful sniveling cowardly people. But when he had been told in Danish that he was going to be shot,
it didn't have the same impact as in the mother tongue. It was much more shocking to be given bad news in one's own language. Céline liked to dwell on
his prison experience. "One great brute," he said, "simply butted me in the stomach without a word."

Allen brought the conversation back to medicine and asked Céline whether he was a good doctor. "I don't know whether I'm good," Céline said, "but I'm reasonable."
His next line was one that Burroughs recognized: "Sick people are less frightening than well ones," to which Burroughs replied, "And dead people are less frightening than live ones."
Then they questioned him about the important writers of the day, but Céline dismissed every name they mentioned—Michaux, Beckett, Sartre, Jean Genet. "It is nothing," said Céline,
"it is just another little fish in the literary pond." As they left, they handed him copies of Howl and Junky, which he quickly glanced at and set aside. It was clear that no other work
but his own was worthy of serious attention.

Barouz zabiljezen u jako vaznom razdoblju - rane osamdesete: Cities & Roads tek izasli, Nova Convention, Jr. u svojim posljednim danima, Punk-Rock scena, 'Bunker', Allen, Carr... vrhunac slave. Veoma vazan film u biografskom smislu - kreativni i idejni su ovde u drugom planu -  samo u fragmentima.

The Green Ghost, by Chad Weidner, uncovers the ecological context of literary texts by William Burroughs. Until now, much scholarly work on Burroughs has focused on the sensational aspects of his life and innovative writing. By rereading canonical and ignored texts while pushing the boundaries of ecocritical theory and practice, Weidner provides a fresh perspective on Burroughs and suggests new theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the work of other Beat writers. Using an ecocritical lens, Weidner explores the toxicity in Naked Lunch, while at the same time teasing out latent ecological questions embedded in Burroughs's later works. The author's analysis of unknown and miniature "cut-ups," texts that have been disassembled and rearranged to create new texts, provides a new understanding of these cryptic forms. Weidner also examines in detail books by Burroughs that have been virtually ignored by critics, exposing the deep ecology of the Beat writer's vision. In calling attention to Burroughs's narrative strategies that link him to an environmental political position, The Green Ghost reveals the work of the Beat writer as a ripe source for ecocritical dialogue.

yup... kao da ne fali ozbilnijih knjiga o njegovom djelu pa ove detalje (rekao bi, za WSB prilicno nevazne) obradjuju.

sad pročito, ili pokušo da čitam Goli ručak, pošto je prilično suprotstavljeno bilo kakvoj ideji klasičnog romana

i sad gledam iliti guglam tumačenja i sve se svodi na Barouzovo pederisanje i življenje u Africi, hiperbola i prećerivanje, degenerisana civilizacija itd

ima li neka krštena alternativna interpretacija?

Ja tu pojma nemam šta sam pročitao.

Šta zapravo nije jasno??? Čovek je godinama živeo delirijum i onda ga zapisao.

Čovjek je bukvalno halucinirao neoliberale!

i to se i ne šalim. Misim spominje Margaret Mid u Golom ručku, jest da ona nije neoliberal ali je upletena blizu te bagre. I generalno još neke stvari kad se povežu, da li je Barouz učestvovao u državnim LSD eksperimentima (Ken Kizi jeste npr), misim tumači seru da je ovo Afrika ili neka semi-autobiografija, a realno je neoliberalizam na drogama i steroidima.

Šta sljedeće da čitam, piše da se dr Benvej i još neki pojavljuju ponovo u drugim Barouzovim knjigama.

I mislim da bih morao na engleskom da čitam, sigurno je pogubljeniji prevod.
