Earth 'well outside safe operating space for humanity', scientists find

QuoteTheir assessment found that six out of nine "planetary boundaries" had been broken because of human-caused pollution and destruction of the natural world. The planetary boundaries are the limits of key global systems – such as climate, water and wildlife diversity – beyond which their ability to maintain a healthy planet is in danger of failing. The broken boundaries mean the systems have been driven far from the safe and stable state that existed from the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago, to the start of the industrial revolution. The whole of modern civilisation arose in this time period, called the Holocene.

For the present, the point of interest is that everywhere on the Earth today chemical power is available and in most places a fire can be lit. Indeed, it would require only an increase of about 4 per cent in the atmospheric level of oxygen to bring the world into danger of conflagration. At 25 per cent oxygen level even damp vegetation will continue to burn once combustion has started, so that a forest fire started by a lightning flash would burn fiercely till all combustible material was consumed. Those science fiction stories of other worlds with bracing atmospheres due to the richer oxygen content are fiction indeed. A landing of the heroes' spaceship would have destroyed the planet.

Ah, stara dobra Sabine.

Sabine ponovo udara.

How do we know climate change is caused by humans?

Doteralo cara do duvara.

I wasn't worried about climate change. Now I am.

The Engine That Drives Our Oceans Is Slowing—And That Could End Life as We Know It

Quote

The collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)—the engine that drives our oceans—could happen as soon as 2100, according to a study from Utrecht University published last month in the journal Science Advances. And while the world may not suffer a fatal flash freeze like in the 2004 action flick The Day After Tomorrow, an AMOC breakdown would probably reduce average air temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere by around 40 degrees Fahrenheit or more, spelling out disaster for life on our planet.
But last year, a brother-sister science team in Denmark made their own prediction about the tipping point. Their model found that the AMOC could shut down as early as 2025 (though the duo says it's more likely to happen toward the middle of the century). The controversial study, published in Nature Communications in June 2023, sparked a media frenzy and a sizable amount of backlash.

Uragan Helena se pokazao kao vrlo smrtonosan. 65 osoba je do sada poginulo. Nekada su ovakvi uragani harali jednom u sto godina, a sada jednom u deset.

'We don't really consider it low probability anymore': Collapse of key Atlantic current could have catastrophic impacts, says oceanographer Stefan Rahmstorf

Quote
The Atlantic Ocean's most vital ocean current is showing troubling signs of reaching a disastrous tipping point. Oceanographer Stefan Rahmstorf tells Live Science what the impacts could be.

BT: So what would climates around the North Atlantic look like if AMOC were to collapse? What regions would be the worst affected?
SR: There would be many impacts. The most immediate one that people probably already know about is the cooling around the northern Atlantic, which is already there in the form of the cold blob. It's also in the air temperature around that region, it's the only part of the world that has not warmed, but has been getting colder, in the last 100 years.
So we already have the symptom there, but when the AMOC really gets much weaker still and collapses, then the cold blob would expand and cover land areas as well — like Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, Iceland, they would likely get several degrees colder and also drier.
That would then enhance the temperature contrast across Europe, because Southern Europe would still be warm and Northern Europe would be cool. These temperature differences drive extreme weather events, bringing a lot more variability and storms. The sea level would also rise by up to half a meter [1.6 feet] in the northern Atlantic in addition to the global average rise that is happening anyway.
There would also be an effect on ocean carbon dioxide uptake. Currently, the ocean takes up 25% of our CO2 emissions just by gas exchange at the sea surface. The ocean can do that because a lot of that CO2 is then transported to the deep ocean by the AMOC. If the overturning circulation stops, that CO2 will stay near the surface and quickly equilibrate with the atmosphere. That would make it [C02 concentrations] rise faster in the atmosphere.
The AMOC also transports oxygen into the deep ocean. This is also bad news [if this process stops], because if you get an oxygen-depleted ocean it would disrupt the entire web of life in the northern Atlantic, and that would disrupt fisheries.
