Why shouldn't things be largely absurd, futile, and transitory? They are so, and we are so, and they and we go very well together.

Imas i sopstvenu reading listu.

Upravo sam završio The Myriad: Tour of the Merrimack #1 by R. M. Meluch. Dobra postavka a loša izvedba.

QuoteMost military SF emphasizes the military, but while Meluch depicts combat and warrior culture as well as any writer in the subgenre, the true joy of this outstanding effort, her first novel since 1992's The Queen's Squadron and the first of a new series, lies in its inspired use of current speculation on the origins of the universe, quantum singularities and even the old chestnut of time travel. In the 25th century, an encounter with a voracious space-faring life-form called the Hive forces declared enemies, the United States and a breakaway colony that styles itself as a reborn Roman Empire, into an uneasy alliance to destroy the common threat. When the U.S. space battleship Merrimack makes first contact with a humanoid race whose star system has apparently been bypassed by the Hive, the U.S. crew is left to ponder how a species that hasn't developed FTL technology can exist in not one but at least three different star systems. Meanwhile, how can an artifact sent by the current ruler of one system exist as an archeological anomaly on another, an artifact 20 billion years old, in a universe only 15 billion years old? Meluch shows particular skill in creating memorable characters while exhibiting a refreshing ruthlessness in subordinating them to the logical ramifications of the plot.

After a 10-years hiatus, a distinguished military sf writer returns to print with a zany adventure that might be considered a PG-13-rated Star Trek. The U.S. space warship Merrimack roams the stars and engages in battle with the all-devouring, space-faring, semisentient, and deadly Swarm. Her captain is Farragut; his chief adviser is a genetically enhanced "patterner" from a human culture that is striving to reproduce the Roman Empire; the air wing of single-seat fighters (a staple of Meluch's fiction) is flown by marines; and one of the pilots is dispatched to seduce the humanoid ruler of an alien race. Eventually, she winds up in bed with the marine CO, and the Merrimack winds up zapped into a parallel universe, with a Chinese female scientist supplanting the Roman patterner, and the whole adventure promising a good deal for the future of the series, Tour of the Merrimack, that it inaugurates. Those who make of military sf a religious observance may find it amusingly difficult to take; the more sensible will quite enjoy.

Dragon Age, a? :D Ja nisam igrice nove upalio stotinu godina, pošto mi je komp krš...Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Witcher, sve sam to propustio...

Nightflier

Završih Oath of Fealty by Elizabeth Moon.

Pročitao sam i Twelve by Jasper Kent.

QuoteZmyeevich had remained standing and now began to speak in very precise, but very formal and strangely accented French. His voice had a darkness to it that seemed to emit not from his throat but from deep in his torso. Somewhere inside him it was as if giant millstones were turning against one another, or as though the lid were being slowly dragged aside to open a stone sarcophagus...On 12th June 1812, Napoleon's massive grande armee forded the River Niemen and so crossed the Rubicon - its invasion of Russia had begun. In the face of superior numbers and tactics, the imperial Russian army began its retreat. But a handful of Russian officers - veterans of Borodino - are charged with trying to slow the enemy's inexorable march on Moscow. Indeed, one of their number has already set the wheels of resistance in motion, having summoned the help of a band of mercenaries from the outermost fringes of Christian Europe.Comparing them to the once-feared Russian secret police - the Oprichniki - the name sticks. As rumours of plague travelling west from the Black Sea reach the Russians, the Oprichniki - but twelve in number - arrive. Preferring to work alone, and at night, the twelve prove brutally, shockingly effective against the French. But one amongst the Russians, Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov, is unnerved by the Oprichniki's ruthlessness...as he comes to understand the true, horrific nature of these strangers, he wonders at the nightmare they've unleashed in their midst...Full of authentic historical detail and heart-stopping supernatural moments, and boasting a page-turning narrative, "Twelve" is storytelling at its most original and exciting.

Isprva mi se roman jako svideo. Kent lepo piše i očigledno razume Rusiju i ruski jezik.

The Silver Skull (Swords of Albion) by Mark Chadbourn

QuoteTwo-time British Fantasy Award winner Chadbourn (the Age of Misrule trilogy) offers a grim and decidedly current take on supernatural Elizabethan intrigues. Will Swyfte, England's greatest spy, is charged with stopping the faerie and their Spanish tools from acquiring the Skull, the Key and the Shield, magic items whose combination could devastate all of Britain. Scenes range from squalid London slums to King Philip's monumental El Escorial palace and the mighty confrontation with the Armada in the English Channel. Readers familiar with cold war spy novels will wryly note Swyfte's visits to Dr. John Dee for the latest in spy technology, à la James Bond and Q. Graphic presentations of tortures from the rack to waterboarding recall contemporary issues in national security, carefully contextualized with Swyfte's dilemmas of personal versus professional codes.

Infoquake (Jump 225 Trilogy) by David Louis Edelman

QuoteSlick high-finance melodrama and dizzying technical speculation lift Edelman's SF debut, the first of a trilogy. Centuries in the future, humans rely less on machines than on upgrading their own nervous systems with nanotech bio/logic programs. Natch, a gifted young code programmer–entrepreneur obsessed with clawing his way to the top, jumps at the chance to merchandise a major new technology, MultiReal, even though he doesn't know what it is. Natch soon becomes a target for not just his business rivals but also totalitarian governmental agencies and more mysterious groups. Natch's being a borderline sociopath makes him extremely creative in business tactics and personal manipulation (and thus fascinating to read about). The world in which he operates is also fascinating, with awesome personal powers being sold on a frantic open market. Edelman, who has a background in Web programming and marketing, gives his bizarre notions a convincing gloss of detail. Bursting with invention and panache, this novel will hook readers for the story's next installment.
