'It's a pantomime where tinsel takes the place of substance'

The writer JG Ballard turned down a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for services to literature in this year's birthday honours

The Guardian

"I might have been tempted had I been entitled to call myself Commander Ballard - it has a certain ring. I could see a yachting cap and a rum ration as perks of the job. If I was French and was awarded the legion of honour, I might well accept. But as a republican, I can't accept an honour awarded by the monarch. There's all that bowing and scraping and mummery at the palace. It's the whole climate of deference to the monarch and everything else it represents. They just seem to perpetuate the image of Britain as too much pomp and not enough circumstance. It's a huge pantomime where tinsel takes the place of substance.

"A lot of these medals are orders of the British Empire, which is a bit ludicrous. The dreams of empire were only swept away relatively recently, in the 60s. Suddenly, we seem to have a prime minister who has delusions of a similar kind.

"It goes with the whole system of hereditary privilege and rank, which should be swept away. It uses snobbery and social self-consciousness to guarantee the loyalty of large numbers of citizens who should feel their loyalty is to fellow citizens and the nation as a whole. We are a deeply class-divided society.

"I think it's deplorable when leftwing playwrights like David Hare, who have worn their socialist colours on both sleeves for so many years, should accept a knighthood. God almighty, this man actually knelt down in front of the Queen.

"I'm in impressive company [in refusing]. Most of them are thoughtful people and people of spirit and independence. It's good to see quite a few showbusiness people, like Albert Finney, a great actor. There were Aldous Huxley, Robert Graves - it suggests there's quite a large number of people who reject the whole notion of honours in their present form. And it might do something towards bringing the whole system down."

My two cents to MISTER Ballard!

David Bowie says no sir to knighthood
Wed Dec 24,12:21 PM ET
LONDON - You can have Sir Mick, and Sir Elton, and Sir Paul, but you'll won't hear Sir David — as in Bowie. The veteran singer was one of the people The Sunday Times revealed as declining honors from the queen.

Bowie said he'd never accept a knighthood and doesn't even know what it's for. 8)

Sir Mick Jagger was delighted to become a knight earlier this month :x  :P   . But bandmate Keith Richards (news) called the title a disgrace and paltry honor.  :!:

The Sunday Times this week published a list of 300 people — including Bowie, comedian John Cleese  :| and actor Kenneth Branagh  — who declined honors since 1945.

About 2 percent of the 3,000 people chosen each year decline, according to the government. Most do so quietly, but last month poet Benjamin Zephaniah publicly rejected an OBE — Officer of the Order of the British Empire — because the title reminded him of "thousands of years of brutality."

"Stick it, Mr. Blair and Mrs. Queen, stop going on about empire," he wrote in The Guardian newspaper.

After the list was published, Prime Minister Tony Blair 's government promised to make the system of awarding knighthoods and other honors more open.

Twice a year the government announces recipients of a host of titles, from knighthoods and damehoods to Companions of Honor, for exceptional achievement or service to the nation.

Though the honors are bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II , most recipients are chosen by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

But at least one person was happy to accept an award this month; 60-year-old rock icon Mick Jagger is now Sir Mick :? , after being knighted on Friday. Jagger is now officially part of the establishment that the Rolling Stones were supposed to be rebelling against all these years, and the only flack from the knighthood came from one of his bandmates.
Jagger was joined at the ceremony with his 92-year-old father and his daughters Karis (32) and Elizabeth (19). He received the honor from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.

Still show a bit of his rebellious nature, Jagger showed up for the ceremony dressed in a designer suit complete with leather lapels and black leather sneakers    :x
Jagger denied that accepting the honor was selling out. "I don't think the establishment as we knew it exists any more," he told reporters. He added that honors are nice, "as long as you don't take it all too seriously."  :x

One person that doesn't seem to share that view is his bandmate Keith Richards. Richards criticized the knighting of Jagger in an interview with British music magazine "Uncut".

"I don't want to step out onstage with someone wearing a coronet and sporting the old ermine," :|  Richards said in the interview.

"I told Mick it's a paltry honor ... It's not what the Stones is about, is it?"

Mick fired back and charged Richards with jealousy.

"I think he would probably like to get the same honor himself,"  :P    Jagger told reporters.

"It's like being given an ice cream — one gets one and they all want one. It's nothing new. Keith likes to make a fuss."

Jagger's flame from long ago, singer Marianne Faithful said last year after it was learned that Jagger was to be knighted, that she wasn't surprised that Jagger accepted the honor. She said that Jagger is "a tremendous snob" and "he always wanted that so much, that's why I'm sort of compassionate about it."    :!:

The knighting seemed to have an immediate effect on the aging rock star. "I suppose people will call me 'Sir Mick,'" he joked with reporters, "but 'Sir Michael' has a nice ring to it."

We are still holding out for Sir Lemmy.
