Disco singer Loleatta Holloway dies at 64

US singer Loleatta Holloway, best known for her vocals which were sampled on Black Box's 1989 hit Ride On Time, has died at the age of 64.

The performer died of heart failure, her manager Ron Richardson confirmed to the BBC.

She made six studio albums and her hits included ballad Only You in 1978 and 1980's Love Sensation.

It was the latter track that Black Box sampled for Ride On Time, which was number one in the UK for six weeks.

The song became controversial after it emerged the Italian dance act had used Holloway's performance without crediting her, and she went on to successfully sue the band.

Her vocals were lip-synched by model Catherine Quinol, who fronted Black Box during their chart success.

"She was a very strong, powerful woman, but she was sweet at the same time," Mr Richardson told BBC 6 Music.

"She was also very fragile, which a lot of people didn't know."

Singer Carol Williams, who was on the SalSoul Records label with Holloway, said that she "put her right up at the top as one of the greatest voices in the world".

"When she recorded in the studio, she would have to stand so far back from the mic. Most singers, you know, go right up to the mic and almost have their lips on it. Loleatta could stand feet away."

Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1 DJ and co-founder of the Acid Jazz label, told 6 Music his favourite Holloway song was Hit and Run.

"That needs to get played again, because that really takes the soul, the emotion, the disco - everything about Loleatta Holloway is in that one song," he said.

Holloway leaves behind four children and nine grandchildren.

A private service for the family and a public memorial at Rev Jesse Jackson's church in Chicago are due to be held.

Elizabeth Taylor dead at 79

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Elizabeth Taylor, the legendary actress famed for her beauty, her jet-set lifestyle, her charitable endeavors and her many marriages, has died, her publicist told CNN Wednesday. She was 79.

Taylor died "peacefully today in Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles," said a statement from her publicist. She was hospitalized six weeks ago with congestive heart failure, "a condition with which she had struggled for many years. Though she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilized and it was hoped that she would be able to return home. Sadly, this was not to be."

Umro glumac Majkl Sarazin

LOS ANĐELES - Kanadski glumac Majkl Sarazin, koji se proslavio u filmu "I konje ubijaju, zar ne?" iz 1969, umro je u 71. godini posle kraće bolesti, preneo je danas Entertejnment vikli.

Za ulogu u tom ostvarenju, Sarazin je bio nominovan za nagradu britanske filmske akademije.

Nominaciju za Zlatni globus dobio je za rolu u filmu "Sirove strasti" iz 1968, u kojem je igrao uz Žaklin Bise.

Imao je uloge i u filmovima "Reinkarnacija Pitera Prauda", "Drugi dolazak", "Stanje uzbune", "Čuvar zakona", "Ponoć u Sankt Peterburgu" i "Na tajnom zadatku".

Poslednja Sarazinova uloga je uz Kristen Stjuart i Viga Mortensena u filmu "Na putu", snimljenom prema istoimenom romanu Džeka Keruaka.

Indian guru Satya Sai Baba dies

One of India's most revered spiritual leaders, Sri Satya Sai Baba, has died in hospital.

The 84-year-old guru died following heart and respiratory problems, which had left him in a critical condition for the past three weeks.

Satya Sai Baba is thought to have millions of followers around the world.

John Sullivan dies

DEL Boy actor David Jason last night led tributes to Only Fools and Horses creator John Sullivan, who has died aged 64 after a short illness.

John, who wrote every episode of the long-running hit sitcom, died in a private hospital after a six-week battle with viral pneumonia.

Last night star David, 71, told of his grief over the man he called Britain's best comedy writer. He said: "I am totally devastated. I shall miss him dreadfully as a ­friend. We've lost our ­country's greatest comedy writer, but he leaves a great legacy – the gift of laughter. My thoughts at this time are with his lovely family."

Actor Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played Del's hapless brother Rodney, said: "John was a shy and self-effacing man, but he had a huge ­passion for his work."

Roger Lloyd Pack–­roadsweeper Trigger – said he was "very shocked" by news of John's death.

He added: "He was up there with the greatest and Fools is arguably the best of all time.

"He was an unbelievably precise writer – there was an almost Dickensian care with his characters.

"John had great integrity as a human being."

BBC One controller Danny Cohen said: "John was a giant of television comedy. His loss will be felt hugely at the BBC and across Britain."

Only Fools and Horses was first broadcast in 1981, with the final Christmas special going out in 2003. It holds the record for the highest UK sitcom audience, when 24.3 million tuned in for 1996 Christmas special Time On Our Hands – in which the Trotters make millions ­selling an antique watch.

John also wrote Citizen Smith, starring Robert ­Lindsay, Dear John and Just Good Friends, starring Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis.

His most recent work was on Only Fools and Horses prequel Rock and Chips. The third and final episode goes out on Thursday.

John, who grew up in ­Balham, South London, left school at 15 with no ­qualifications. He landed a job as a scene shifter at BBC Television Centre and got his big break when he submitted the script for Citizen Smith to comedy producer Dennis Main Wilson.

He leaves wife Shirley, two sons, a daughter and two grandchildren.

Umro scenarista Kevin Žar

Kevin Žar, autor scenarija za filmove "Slava" i "Anđeo sa dva lika", umro je iznenada u 57. godini u svom domu u Kaliforniji.

Njegova rođaka Peti Brajli Bin izjavila je Los Anđeles tajmsu da je Žar umro 3. aprila od problema sa srcem.

Kevin Žar, usvojeni sin istaknutog kompozitora Morisa Žara i polubrat muzičara Žan-Mišela Žara, bio je nominovan za Zlatni globus za scenario filma "Slava" iz 1989. Taj film u kojem igraju Denzel Vašington, Morgan Frimen i Metju Broderik dobio je tri Oskara.

Žar je napisao scenario i za filmove "Mumija", "Rambo 2" i "Tombstone".
