RIP Colin McRae

RALLY driving legend Colin McRae has died after his helicopter crashed in an accident near his home.

Although the driver's body has yet to be formally identified police in Scotland said they believed McRae was one of the four who died in the accident.

The privately owned helicopter that crashed yesterday afternoon is registered to the the 1995 World Rally Champion.

It came down just a short way from the McRae family home in Lanarkshire.

The aircraft crashed into woods and burst into flames. More than 40 fire fighters were needed to bring the resulting fire under control.

Police said there had been no survivors.

McRae's death means Britain has lost both its world rally champions in tragic circumstances.

The Scotman's successor, Englishman Richard Burns, died of a brain tumour.

McRae only won the world title once but he became an icon for a generation of fans who loved his "never give up" attitude and raw speed.

He also gave his name to a popular series of video games and was developing his own line of rally cars.
