With the giant earthquake and devastating tsunamis on Friday, along with the volcanic eruption and the growing potential nuclear accidents over the weekend, Japan is severly hurting right now and will have a long road of recovery ahead. As a result of the disasters though, two films are being pulled from Japanese theaters over understandable concerns of taste.

The first is Clint Eastwood's "Hereafter" which is being pulled specifically for its Oscar-nominated extended opening disaster sequence involving a very realistic tsunami hitting a South-East Asian coastal town.

Warner Entertainment Japan head Satoru Otani says continuing to run the film is "not appropriate" according to Deadline.

Meanwhile, Japanese distributor Shochiku is expected to delay the release of Chinese disaster film "Aftershock" to cinemas in the wake of Friday's deadly earthquake according to spokesperson for producers Huayi Brothers Pictures says the trades.

Feng Xiaogang's film depicts the devastating 1976 Tangshan earthquake which killed about 250,000 Chinese. It also deals with the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province which killed nearly 80,000.

The film was scheduled for a regular and IMAX release March 26th across Japan.

Synopsis/ Plot:
Yuichi Shimizu (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is a young man who takes care of his grandparents in a decaying fishing village in Nagasaki. His grandparents raised Yuichi instead of his mother. Yuichi now works as a civil employee. He is a lonely man.
One day, Yuichi meets Yoshino Ishibashi (Hikari Mitsushima) an insurance sales woman from Fukuoka. They first met through an online dating site. Their meeting ends in tragedy with Yuichi murdering Yoshino. Unexpectedly, a rich young university student from Fukuoka, named Keigo Masuo (Masaki Okada) endss up as the prime suspect. Then one day, Yuichi receives an email. The email is from Mitsuyo Magome (Eri Fukatsu), a woman from Saga. Yuichi and Mitsuyo exchanged emails in the past after meeting through an online dating site. Mitsuyo currently lives a mundane life, working at a men's clothing store and living with her younger sister. Looking for companionship, Mitsuyo decided to reach out to Yuichi after a lengthy time without correspondence.
The two lonely souls then meet for the first time and throw themselves into a moment of love. By this time, Yuichi is now a wanted criminal and his face appears on the news. Pogledao sam MAN OF VENDETTA Min Ho Wooa. Iako mi se više dojmio od Kim Ji Woonovog I SAW THE DEVIL, ovo je takođe jedan od korejskih osvetničkih filmova koji se vrte u krug utabanim chanwookparkovskim stazama. U ovom slučaju, rekao bih, ipak sve je to urađeno sa mnogo više ubedljivosti i autentičnosti nego kod Kim Ji Woona, ali isto tako ovaj film zahetva zaista mnogo "žanrovskih" podrazumevanja, zaista masu progledavanja kroz prste, da bi ishodište na kraju opet bilo u domenu priče koja nam je dobro poznata.

Ovog puta, kao što smo navikli, imamo duboko traumatizovanog junaka i psihopatu koji je do te mere bestidan, surov i monstruozan da prosto poziva na brutalnu osvetu.

Pozitivac je nekadašnji pastor koji usled nemogućnosti da locira svoju otetu kćer napušta veru, u gestu koji je na nivou stupidnije role Nicolasa Cagea, i postaje trgovac hirurškom opremom, što nažalost, uprkos elementarnoj dramaturškoj kulturi, začuđujuće ne zaigra kasnije i nema značajniju funkciju. Junak pokušava da zaboravi ćerku sa kojom je poslednji kontakt imao pre osam godina kada ga ponovo kontaktira manijak koji ju je oteo i ulazi u novu rundu pregovora oko otkupa.

tada MAN OF VENDETTA ulazi u svoju mešavinu bizarnog i manje bizarnog nasilja, egzistencijalizma i poslovično vešte korejste realizacije, sa dilemama koje su kod Chan Wook Parka pre bezmalo deceniju delovale sveže a sada su već postale gotovo parodično opšte mesto.

Za razliku od Kim Ji Woona koji je u svom filmu sveo priču na ono što je zapravo najmanje važno i najmanje zanimljivo kod Parka, a to je međusobni pritisak i sakaćenje, Min Ho Woo je ipak mnogo taktičniji i on uspeva da manje-više efektno zaigra na kartu zanimljivih ambijenata, socijalnih okolnosti, karakternih idiosinkrazija.

Ono što je suštinski najmanje istražen adut priče jeste zapravo celo pripitomljavanje devojčice od strane otmičara prema kome ona uspeva da razvije neku vrstu stokholmskog sindroma, međutim ta tema je dovoljno dotaknuta da na kraju nije ni mudro ostavljena u off prostoru ni sasvim istražena, i iako u sebi nosi neku istinitost deluje nedorečeno.

MAN OF VENDETTA je film koji međutim ostaje najslabiji upravo u tom domenu religioznosti glavnog junaka. Naime, stanje u kome on postaje osvetoljubih i shvata da ne može više da propoveda ljubav i praštanje može biti ubedljiv motiv, ali on napušta propovedanje ljubavi i praštanja u fazi kada zapravo on nije otkrio sve grešne naslade osvete već dok još uvek očekuje od Nebesa "da nešto preduzmu". To je potpuno devalviralo uvođenje ovog motiva jer još od vremena Charlesa Bronsona, junaci, a naročito filmski men of cloth, nemaju tako infantilan doživljaj vere.

S druge strane, moguće je da smo mi navikli da ovu vrstu filmova gledamo u superiornijem izdanju Chan Wook Parka te da samim tim mi to doživljavamo kao film visoke umetničke vrednosti a ne puku žanrovsku zabavu. U tom smislu, onima koji teskobne korejske filmove o osveti vide kao neki dalekoistočni pandan buddy cop filmovima ovaj film neće biti LETHAL WEAPON ali može stajati kao RED HEAT. Drugi pak, koji od ove vrste korejskog repertoara očekuju neku svežinu i ne nalaze zabavu u beskrajnom recikliranju iste formule, neće bti podjednako zadovoljni.

Otud, jako je teško odavde prioceniti tačno mesto naslova kao što je MAN OF VENDETTA na korejskom repertoaru. A treba ukalkulisati i vankorejske gledaoce kojima ovo može biti uvodni film za osvetnički južnokorejski ciklus, a oni bi mogli jako uživati u njemu. No, u svakom slučaju, gateway drug za adikciju na južnokorejski film pre svega treba da budu Bong Jong Ho i drugi veliki majstori.

Ipak, ovakva inflacija filmova koji recikliraju osvetničku formulu Chan Wookovih filmova otvara jedno drugo pitanje, a to je slika Južne Koreje koja se stiče na osnovu ovih radova i to ne u propagandnom pogledu "slike zemlje koju filmski autori šalju u svet" već upravo iz vizure repertoarske pozicije ovih filmova. Naime, nije Južna Koreja prva zemlja u kojoj je brutalni osvetnički film činio značajan deo repertioarske ponude - setimo se Amerike sedamdesetih - ali isto tako ovo je prva zemlja u kojoj takva zapravo vrlo okoštala formula biva vrlo istrajno tretirana sa najvećim mogućim ambicijama.

Otud zanimljivo je da ovu vrstu filmova korejska publika rado gleda, a reklo bi se da su MAN OF VENDETTA sa 6,5 miliona dolara u Koreji i I SAW THE DEVIL sa 12 bili poprilični hitovi, a imaju mesto i u svetu. Međutim, kao što je delovalo da su parkovi filmovi u sebi imali nešto autentično, tako i ovi filmovi sada imaju u sebi nešto konfekcijsko, skup klišea koji treba da stvore nekakvu emociju i kako se nalaze na pola puta između eksploatacije i art-housea oni podsećaju na neku kao cool varijantu evropskog fondacijskog filma sa kojim dele popriličnu neautentičnost.

Synopsis/ Plot:
A phone conversation occurs between a man and a woman. They both state their love for each other and that they will do this so they can be together. The woman is in a hotel room with a view of the port. The man is inside of a parked car with a view of the ocean. A man named Colonel appears and hands the man a box with a loaded gun inside. The Colonel states "its a present from the witch".
The woman's name is Meiko (Michiko Kichise) and she is the young wife of Takamitsu Temiyako (Takamitsu Temiyako) - president of a large medical corporation. The man in the parked car is Dr. Tokito Takahiko (Hiroshi Abe) an employee of the large medical corporation. This evening, Meiko and Tokito will implement their plan to murder Meiko's husband and frame his death as a suicide.
Because of an important government official visiting Japan, the streets of Yokohama have been cordoned off. Meiko's husband will also be alone in his office, allowing for the perfect opportunity for Meiko and Tokito's to implement their plan.
Tokito goes inside his office on the 5th floor and instructs his secretary not to allow any phone calls while he is doing paperwork. He then uses a rope from his balcony to climb to the 6th floor and heads for the bathroom. He goes ahead and completes his mission. While Tokito leaves the office he then becomes trapped in the elevator, which is turned off at 5:30.
Meanwhile, Tokito's Alfa Romeo is stolen by two young people. As Meiko waits for Tokito in a nearby cafe, she sees Tokito's Alfa Romeo drive by, but with a woman in the passenger seat.
The couple that stole Tokito's Alfa Romeo then checks into a villa using Tokito's name. A murder occurs at the villa that is widely reported by the news.
In the morning, the elevator turns back on and Tokito is finally able to leave the office. He is now the prime suspect in a murder he didn't commit. When the police arrive to interview Tokito they soon discover the dead body of the company president ...

Synopsis/ Plot:

Pogledao sam THE MAN FROM NOWHERE Jeong Beom Leeja južnokorejski akcioni triler koji u sebi spaja ono što je dobro i sveže u južnokorejskom pogledu na tradicionalne američke žanrove i ono što je slabost njihovog pristupa tim temama.

Naime, Južna Koreja usled relativnog nedostatka tradicije žanrovskog filma naročito u ovim tipičnim repertoarskim formama u kojima Holivud dominira, poput akcionog trilera još uvek uspeva da tim temama priđe sa izvesnim žarom i nekonvencionalnošću sa kojima Holivud odavno ne samo da im ne prilazi već ih ni ne tretira ozbiljno. Štaviše, čini se da Holivud danas u stvari podjednako pokušava da ponovo pronađe smisao u tim žanrovima ali na drugi način, tretirajući ih postmoderno ili sa nekim dodatnim spinom poput angažovanja reditelja koji nisu specijalisti za to. Otud su holivudski filmovi koji su poslednjih godina uspeli da se nametnu kao standard za tu vrstu filma naslovi poput THE BOURNE SUPREMACY ili RED.

Ostatak strejt ponude, bez nekih naročitih dodataka, Holivud je prosledio na DTV gde tim žanrom suvereno vladaju nekadašnje bioskopske zvezde koje su ga i učinile popularnim.

U Koreji pak, još uvek postoji kapacitet da se bez stida snimi film o nekadašnjem operativcu tamošnje tajne službe koji sada radi kao tihi, usamljeni, vlasnik zalagonice ali spreman je da ponovo stupi u akciju kako bi zaštitio jednu devojčicu čija je mati pošla stranputicom.

Stepen ozbiljnosti sa kojom prilazi ovoj premisi koja je već od opisa lika potpuno seagalovska je impresivan i još da nema ozbiljnog problema koji datira iz ranih dana razvoja ovoga što danas znamo kao korejski repertoarski film a to je užasna derivativnost, a ovde je deriviran LEON, mogli bismo reći da je THE MAN FROM NOWHERE imao potencijal da bude veliko osveženje. Međutim, slično nama poznatom slučaju ČETVRTOG ČOVEKA u kome je sličnost sa Bourneom bila veliki hendikep i znatno degradirala film, ovde je isti slučaj sa LEONom. Doduše, LEON objektivno nije bio toliko skoro da bi stvorio problem kao što je BOURNE ULTIMATUM stvorio ČETVRTOM ČOVEKU kad su izašli praktično u isto vreme, ali u principu u ovo vreme se i u Holivudu kuvalo par filmova sa akcijom i spojem male dece sa herojima poput KICK ASS i sl. Dakle, THE MAN FROM NOWHERE je svoj utisak pokvario oslanjajući se na jedan trenutno eksploatisani koncept.

S druge strane, sasvim je razumljivo da ako pogledamo prilično visok nivo realizacije ovog filma, možemo pretpostaviti da je ova pozajmica više bila namera nego greška, odnosno da je reč o ekipi koja zna šta radi i da su naprosto osetili kako je korejskom filmu potreban film sa takvom karakternom dinamikom.

Drugi problem, ako se to može smatrati problemom a ne lokalnom idiosinkrazijom jeste sam format filma. Naime, THE MAN FROM NOWHERE traje skoro dva sata iako nema previše razloga za to. Znamo da jak akcijaš može bez problema da traje toliko, ali ovaj film prosto ipak nije to i ima dosta praznog hoda, suvišnih karakternih vinjeta, rekao bih čak ustupaka bizarnostima koje se očekuju od korejskog filma, možda i baš od stranaca. Otud su protivnici seagalovskog lika ovde bizarni kriminalci skloni tipičnim chanwookovskim vidovima kriminala poput trgovine organima i sl.

Ako se puka bizarnost i drastičnost chanwookovskog tipa mogu smatrati kao exploitation adut, ono gde THE MAN FROM NOWHERE onda tupi svoju oštricu jeste odricanje od onog što je možda najsnažniji adut korejskog filma o opsesivcima, psihopatama i osvetnicima a to je transformacija "običnog čoveka" u izopačenu mašinu za ubijanje, premda čak i Kim Ji Woon u svom I SAW THE DEVIL nudi glavnog junaka koji je pripadnik službi bezbednosti.

Zanimljiva je otud ta ideološka dimenzija prisutna u THE MAN FROM NOWHERE i I SAW THE DEVIL gde imamo junake iz tajnih službi koji čiste ulice od šljama, što je jeste u izvesnom smislu bilo prisutno kao tema naročito u reakcionarnom američkom exploitationu u post-vijetnamskom periodu sa tipičnim narativom o iscrpljenom ratnom heroju koji je krvario za pogrešnu politiku a onda se vratio kući i zatekao groznu hipokriziju među onima koje je otišao da brani/zastupa. Ne uspevam tačno da prepoznam simptome u južnokorejskom društvu koji bi mogli objasniti to okretanje bezbednjaka prema "unutrašnjem" neprijatelju. Naime, koliko god se južnokorejski film trudio da postojanje Severne Koreje tretira prevashodno kao tragediju grupe ljudi pa tek onda kao neki represivni režim i protivnika, Južna Koreja definitivno ima protivnika koji je za njihove pojmove vrlo prisutan i aktivan i za razliku od Vijetnama nije preko sedam mora i sedam gora. Otud okretanje bezbednjaka unutrašnjem neprijatelju ili ima neko značenje ili je potpuno kopiranje američkog modusa, u kome pak itekako ima značenje. Ne znam, ali pokušaću da saznam.

U triptihu osvetničkih filmova koji čine DEVIL, VENDETTA i NOWHERE, ne naročito kvalitetni VENDETTA mi je ostavio najsnažniji utisak. Ipak, isto tako, NOWHERE i nije tipičan korejski revenge film, već pre akcioni triler koji svoju priču shvata ako ne ozbiljno a ono ambiciozno pa se u tom smislu tu i tamo nadovezuje na korejski revenge film kao legitimisanu "umetničku formu". Kao fan akcionog filma, naravno, radujem se da ih neko tako ozbiljno radi, i u svakom slučaju ovaj film je obavezna lektira za fanove žanra, uprkos svojim, kako već rekoh brojnim i često vrlo ozbiljnim nedostacima.

Plot:

Plot:

Hou's wife blames him for the death of their daughter and leaves him. Hou attacks the monks in anger but is quickly subdued.

Najzad se pojavio jedan od filmova koje sam očekivao sa najvećom pažnjom, ELEPHANT WHITE Prachye Pinkaewa. Računao sam da će debi ovog reditelja profilisan za zapadno tržište omogućiti da se on malo uozbilji upravo na nivou vođenja priče i efikasnosti. I zbilja, u ovom filmu Pinkaew bolje vodi priču nego inače, film je jasan i efikasan, podela koju predvodi Djimon Hounsou je vrhunska i dobro postavljena. Pinkaew sa samo dva glumca van Tajlanda uspeva da postigne dobar rezultat s tim što je Kevin Bacon nedovoljno iskorišćen i uključen u seriju zapravo repetitivnih scena.

Dakle, zapadni producenti i standardi su pomogli Pinkaewu da bolje savlada ono što je najvažnije u pravljenju filma a to je kako se vodi priča. Međutim, ono čega nema, to su akcione scene po kojima su se proslavili on i Panna Rittikrai. Odnosno, akcije zapravo ima dosta, u odnosu na minutažu čak i više nego u tipičnom Prachyinom filmu. Međutim, Djimonova specijalnost je pucanje i to naročito iz snajperskih pušaka tako da je on mahom daleko od svojih protivnika i tuča, a tuča - radi kojih smo se svi okupili, ima prilično malo, gotovo zanemarljivo u odnosu na Prachyine filmove. Na špici čak i nema Panne i čini se da je Prachya ovde više pokušao da se showcaseuje kao klasični reditelj akcionih filmova, bez akcenta na onome po čemu je prepoznatljiv što je zbunjujuće, mada se možda može objasniti time što Djimon, koliko god da je fizički spreman ipak nije Tony Jaa i moguće je da sa njim nisu mogle da se realizuju te borbe.

U svakom slučaju, Pinkaew se neće baš daleko probiti sa ovim filmom jer nije pružio ono što ume i što se od njega očekuje kao od svojevrsnog inovatora u akcionom žanru. Ovakav kakav je, ELEPHANT WHITE je vrlo solidan DTV, sa odličnom zvezdom u glavnoj ulozi i potencijalom koji nikada ne ispuni. Ipak, bilo bi lepo da ako se Pinkaew ikada vrati svojim akcionim obeležjima sa sobom ponese i pripovedačku disciplinu kojoj se naučio ovde.

Plot:

The film inspired by Thai historical heroes who sacrificed to fight against the invasion of
intruders and sought for the freedom of the country. Set in southern Mongolia over 1,000 years ago,
a small tribe called Tai was a colony under the power of the Great Han who enslaved them.
Oppressed by the Han, the Tai united, to strike back for their freedom, justice and country.

Plot:
