Greece's Former Finance Minister Explains Why A Universal Basic Income Could Save Us

With robots coming for all the jobs, why shouldn't everyone get some guaranteed support?

Next time you're having an fight with somebody who doesn't like the idea of a universal basic income, you might employ some of these arguments from Yanis Varoufakis, Greece's former finance minister. In an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger, he not only refutes the usual arguments against the concept that the government should give everyone a minimum check every month, but he makes them sound quite ridiculous.
The interview was published ahead of the Switzerland's vote on a universal basic income (or UBI) in June. If successful, all Swiss adults would get $2,500 per month, and kids around $625 per month, whether or not they have a job. Here are some of Varoufakis's best answers. First, on the need for a UBI:
For the first time in the history of technology more jobs are destroyed than created. Technical progress means that more and more high-paying jobs will disappear and thus shrink the middle class. This will in turn cause a further concentration of income and wealth in the upper classes. That's why I fight like a basic income for sociopolitical reforms.
The robotization
[of work] has long been underway, but robots don't buy products. Therefore, a basic income is needed to offset this change and stabilize a society which has an increasing wealth inequality. Asked if a UBI encourages unemployment, Varoufakis pointed to experiments in 1970s Canada that show people not only don't sit at home all day, but they don't even leave their jobs. Also, "In Switzerland, to my knowledge, only 2% of survey respondents have said they would stop working."
As an example, he gives this zinger:
In Switzerland there are already many people who do not work, or hardly work: the rich.
Then, on why you need a UBI if you already have a good job:
What good is a well-paying job, if you are afraid to lose it? This constant fear paralyzes.
The interviewer then asked Varoufakis about a statement from Swiss corporate union Economiesuisse, which warns that the Swiss people would quickly turn to idleness.
It's just a shame that the trade association has such a negative image of the Swiss people. And apparently Economiesuisse has no problem if, for example, children of rich factory owners and managers turn to "idleness" thanks to their inherited wealth.
They don't work in order to survive, but in order to realize themselves. For example, by engaging in foundations, to work on projects, or to continue their education at first-class schools. Why aren't children from less privileged backgrounds allowed a fraction of these opportunities? Less competition and angst will make people more creative, thus creating new wealth.
Varoufakis agrees with one problem—with $2,500 a month on the table, wouldn't everyone move to Switzerland? He advocates for regulation, which is almost certainly what will happen.
The Tages Anzeiger interviewer then veers off topic, into a discussion about immigration, refugees, and xenophobia, but if you're looking for clear answers to the questions most often asked about a universal basic income, the first half of the article is fantastic, and well worth a read.

Salah Abdeslam's Lawyer Says He Is 'A Moron'

QuoteParis terror attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam has been branded "a moron" by his own lawyer.
Belgian brief Sven Mary delivered a scathing assessment of his client as Abdeslam was transferred from Belgium to France to face charges over the attacks that killed 130 people on 13 November last year.
Mr Mary told French newspaper Liberation: "He is a moron petty criminal from Molenbeek - more a follower than a leader.
"He has the intelligence of an empty ashtray. He is the perfect example of the GTA (Grand Theft Auto video game) generation who thinks he lives in a video game."
The lawyer said that in meetings with his notorious client, Abdeslam had admitted never to have read the Koran.
Mr Mary said: "I asked him if he had read the Koran and he said he had read an interpretation of it on the internet."
The French prosecutor's office said Abdeslam arrived in the French capital at 7.05am (9.05am local time).
Authorities in Belgium confirmed the suspect had been handed over under a European arrest warrant issued on 19 March - the day after he was arrested in Brussels after four months on the run.
Abdeslam's French lawyer Frank Berton described his client in a television interview as a young man who was ready to cooperate, but would do so at a later date once the case against him has been reviewed by his legal team.
French Justice Minister Jean-Jacques Urvoas said Abdeslam would be placed in isolation in a prison in the Paris region, watched by guards specially adapted "for people reputed to be dangerous".
He did not name the prison where Abdeslam would be housed.
Abdeslam's extradition came a day after CCTV footage emerged of his brother Brahim blowing himself up in the Comptoir Voltaire restaurant on the night of the suicide bomb and gun attacks.
Salah Abdeslam reportedly told Belgian investigators he was supposed to detonate a suicide belt at the Stade de France, where the attacks - claimed by Islamic State - began.
Later, gunmen armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles shot customers at Le Carillon bar and Petit Cambodge restaurant.
Attackers also opened fire in front of A La Bonne Biere restaurant in the 11th district, and outside La Belle Equipe.
At the Bataclan Concert Hall, several gunmen entered the venue and shot randomly at the crowd.
Salah Abdeslam was the only surviving suspect involved in the attacks - in which 350 people were injured.

Konačno i vi možete da otvorite račun u Goldman Sahsu!!!!!!!!!

Goldman Sachs launches GS Bank, an Internet bank with a $1 minimum deposit

QuoteGoldman Sachs has traditionally functioned like a run-of-the-mill investment bank. Minimums to open an account were in the range of $10 million, and returns were not guaranteed.
While that will still remain true for the firm's wealth management arm, Goldman is opening its doors to the masses with the launch of GS Bank, an FDIC-insured, Internet-based savings bank.
And just what do we mean by the masses? Well, anyone with an Internet connection and a dollar — because that is what each account's minimum balance will be.
GS Bank's interest rates will be high, giving customers an annual yield of 1.05 percent. This rate trumps the average U.S. saving's bank yield of .06 percent APY, but is relatively in line with other online rival banks like Ally, which offers 1 percent APY.
Deposit yields from online banks are traditionally much higher than traditional banks, mainly because of the cost savings that come from not having to support brick-and-mortar branches.
The bank was born out of Goldman's acquisition of GE Capital Bank, the online retail bank previously run by General Electric's capital arm.
The launch of GS Bank and acquisition of GE Capital Bank is a move by Goldman to diversify revenue streams and strengthen liquidity in a market where traditional investment banking isn't doing as well as it has in the past.
Currently, GS Bank has total deposits of around $114 billion, which pales in comparison to the total deposits of large consumer banks like Wells Fargo and Bank of America.

Zanimljiv tekst daily mail-a u prilog Brexitu.

France's After Work Email Ban Is 1 Step Closer To Reality

Quote
France is that much closer to becoming the first country to ban after-work emails.
The country's lower parliamentary house passed a bill this week that would ban companies with 50 or more employees from sending emails outside regular work hours, BBC News reported.
It now goes to the Senate, where members will study it before sending it back to the National Assembly to enshrine it in French law.

The bill would make businesses come up with hours during which employees cannot check or send emails.
And it comes as workers are finding it increasingly difficult to detach themselves from work, Socialist MP Benoit Hamon told BBC News.
"Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work," he said.
"They remain attached by a kind of electronic leash — like a dog. The texts, the messages, the emails — they colonize the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down."
The bill marks the closest that any country has come to regulating after-work email.
Two years ago, German Employment Minister Andrea Nahles looked into legislation that would limit the use of email outside work, but no such law was ever passed, The Guardian reported.
And while France's proposed law is being praised in some quarters, others don't feel that it will solve the problem of work-related stress.

"I think the topic of work-related well-being is much larger than simply stopping email after-hours."
Workers might become anxious at a flood of emails they have to check in the morning, Gillian Symon and Jon Whittle, researchers at a U.K. project looking at how digital technology affects the work-life balance, told The Washington Post.
"I think the topic of work-related well-being is much larger than simply stopping email after-hours," Whittle said.
"Email is just a medium used to communicate. The real problem is the culture of having to constantly do more and constantly do better than competitors."
But France is definitely on to something when it comes to how much people are finding themselves tied to work.
A 2015 study from the Center for Creative Leadership, an executive education firm, Center for Creative Leadershipfound that employees who use smartphones end up working as much as 13.5 hours every day — and as many as 72 hours every week when you include weekends.
The research also found that people are only spending about three hours every day on activities such as working out and family time.
But subjects in that study didn't blame technology for their extra work hours — they blamed their employers' lousy time and people management.
"While technology may be a logical scapegoat, it is actually just a new-age mask for an age-old problem: poor management and poor leadership," the report said.

China's tech work culture is so intense that people sleep and bathe in their offices

Quote
China's technology sector is booming at an intensely fast pace. Many startups are seeing their business grow faster than they can hire, placing a heavy burden on those already working within the industry.
"The pace of Chinese internet company growth is extremely fast," Cui Meng, general manager and cofounder of data startup Goopal, told Reuters. "I've been to the US and the competitive environment there isn't as intense as in China."
This has led many workers to put in overtime, sleeping at their desks, on cots, or even in provided bunk beds. Many employees are encouraged to live at the office during the workweek. Lunchtime naps are generally allowed, and those who end up staying past midnight usually pass out in the office.
Reuters photographer Jason Lee recently got an inside look at the phenomenon. Here's what he saw:

ISIS strikes Baghdad with wave of deadly bombs
Quote
A wave of bombings struck outdoor markets and a restaurant in Shiite-dominated neighborhoods of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 69 people, officials said — the latest in deadly militant attacks far from the front lines in the country's north and west where Iraqi forces are battling the Islamic State group.
In an online statement, IS claimed responsibility only for the deadliest bombing of the day, which took place in Baghdad's northeastern Shaab neighborhood and where at least 34 people were killed and 75 others were wounded.
In that attack, a roadside bomb first exploded outside the concrete blast walls surrounding the open-air market, followed by a suicide bomber who blew himself up as people gathered to help the victims of the first explosion, a police officer said.
The IS statement said the attack was carried out by an Iraqi who targeted members of Shiite militias. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement but it was posted on a militant website commonly used by extremists.
Tuesday's bombings were just the latest in a wave of attacks in Baghdad and surrounding areas that has left more than 200 dead over the past week. The attacks, many claimed by IS, come as the group has lost significant chunks of territory to Iraqi ground forces over the past year.
As the Islamic State militants are pushed back along front lines, the group is increasingly turning to insurgency-style attacks to detract from their losses, Iraqi and coalition officials say. (AP)

EgyptAir says flight from Paris to Cairo missing

Quote
(Reuters) - National carrier EgyptAir said a plane carrying 69 passengers and crew on a flight from Paris to Cairo had gone missing on Thursday, disappearing from radar over the Mediterranean Sea.
"An official source at EgyptAir stated that Flight MS804, which departed Paris at 23:09 (CEST), heading to Cairo has disappeared from radar," the airline said on its official Twitter account.
Later Tweets by EgyptAir said the plane, which was traveling at an altitude of 37,000 feet (11,280 meters), disappeared soon after entering Egyptian airspace. The aircraft was carrying 59 passengers and 10 crew.
According to flightradar24.com, the plane was an Airbus A320 and its last known position was above the Mediterranean Sea.
An Airbus A321 operated by Russia's Metrojet crashed in the Sinai in 31 October 2015, killing all 224 people on board. Russia and Western governments have said the plane was likely brought down by a bomb, and the Islamic State militant group said it had smuggled an explosive on board.
Reuters reported in January that an EgyptAir mechanic, whose cousin joined Islamic State in Syria, is suspected of planting the bomb, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In March, an EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to land in Cyprus by a man with what authorities said was a fake suicide belt. He was arrested after giving himself up.
France's aviation authority could not immediately be reached for comment.
