činjenica da ove godine izbacuje čak 2 nova IGRANA filma dovoljan je povod da se to ispravi, makar donji rivjui ukazivali da se ne radi baš o stelarnim postignućima... :(

Following so hot on the heels of "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" that the latter's shoe leather will be scuffed, Werner Herzog's "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done," unspooled in Venice as a surprise film, actually repped the lesser surprise, given "Lieutenant's" unexpectedly friendly Lido reception. Teeming with quirky references to Herzog's oeuvre, "My Son" will feel like familiar territory for the helmer's fans, but that doesn't make it a good film. Though fitfully fascinating, this account of a deranged matricide never gels and will struggle even harder than "Rescue Dawn" to find an aud.
Billed as "inspired by a true story," the plot recounts the lead-up to a crime both bizarre and banal, making for something of a shaggy-dog story whose bark is more interesting than its bite. Main action is interspersed with lots of wacky, hardly necessary but occasionally amusing digressions, such as an inexplicable visit to what looks like Inner Mongolia; a trip to the Peruvian wilds that visually evokes Herzog's Latin American-set classics "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo"; and a visit to an ostrich farm run by a deranged character played by "The Wild Blue Yonder's" Brad Dourif. If "My Son" were an album, it would be a concert of Herzog singing a collection of his reworked B-sides, live and slightly off-key.
The story proper opens with San Diego homicide detective Hank Havenhurst (Willem Dafoe) arriving at a suburban manse to investigate the murder of Mrs. McCullum (Grace Zabriskie). The elderly matron was skewered with a sword by her own son, Brad (Michael Shannon), in the home of her neighbors (Irma P. Hall, Loretta Devine), witnesses to the event.
Havenhurst hasn't got far to go to look for Brad: He's holed up in his own house across the street with a shotgun and two hostages, whose identities are only revealed in the last reel.
Police surround the house to wait it out. Brad's g.f., Ingrid (Chloe Sevigny), arrives on the scene and tells Havenhurst about the slow unraveling of Brad's mind, beginning with a misbegotten trip to Peru, when he started hearing voices in his head. The testimony of legit helmer Lee Meyers (Udo Kier) further fills out the story, as he explains how Brad started overidentifying with his role as the mother-slaying Orestes in a stage production of "The Furies," while at home, he struggled to separate himself from his over-protective, emotionally smothering mom.
Even the laziest armchair critic couldn't fail to spot how Brad reps but the latest in a long line of Herzog protagonists a few sandwiches shy of a picnic, from nearly every character Klaus Kinski played for the helmer through the many eccentrics featured in his docus, right up to Timothy Treadwell in "Grizzly Man." However, despite the innate charisma Shannon, with his Andean-range-long stare, brings to the role, common-or-garden schizophrenic Brad McCullum simply isn't all that interesting. (Although one rather warms to him when he channels Herzog with an anti-hippie rant -- "Stop meditating! Come up with a coherent argument!" -- in the Peruvian interlude.)
Pic's other characters are not a particularly compelling bunch, which is even more disappointing given that they're played by some pretty big names. Dafoe, Sevigny and Kier seem to be competing to see who can give the most arch, knowingly flat perf, putting invisible air quotes around their renditions of "normal" suburbanites. David Lynch regular Zabriskie ("Inland Empire"), on the other hand, hams it up royally, particularly in a scene in which she smiles creepily at Brad and Ingrid for what seems like a full minute of screen time.
In fact, at times the pic feels like a joshing, good-natured parody of a Lynch movie, given the big deal made of coffee in one scene, the use of spooky underlighting and the comical, nonsensical appearance of a person of restricted growth (Verne Troyer). Of course, Herzog arguably got there first with the creepy little people in "Even Dwarfs Started Small." In any event, Lynch is definitely in on the joke; he exec produced the pic, which is billed as "a David Lynch presentation."
Sound and color correction were a little dodgy in digital projection, although Herzog's regular lenser, Peter Zeitlinger, turns in fluent camerawork as ever, having switched to a digital format after a long career in 35mm. Ernst Reijseger's woozy, dreamy music sounds as lovely here as the stuff did he for "The Wild Blue Yonder"; the score is often completely at odds with what's unfolding onscreen, but it's hardly the only thing here that's off-kilter.
Camera (color, widescreen, HD), Peter Zeitlinger; editors, Joe Bini, Omar Daher; music, Ernst Reijseger; production designers, Tyson Estes, Danny Caldwell; costume designer, Mikel Padilla; sound (Dolby Digital), Greg Agalsoff; supervising sound editor, Dean Hurley; assistant director, John T. Churchill; casting, Jenny Jue, Johanna Ray. Reviewed at Venice Film Festival (competing), Sept. 4, 2009. (Also in Telluride Film Festival; Toronto Film Festival -- Special Presentations.) From the moment it was announced, there was something a tad loony about the idea of remaking -- or revisiting or reinventing or whatever they want to call it -- Abel Ferrara's 1992 "Bad Lieutenant," with Werner Herzog, no less, directing. Well, lo and behold, there's also something rather loony about the finished film itself. But there's also a sort of deadpan zaniness, stemming from a steadfast conviction in its own absurdity, that gives "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" a strange distinction all its own. Not at all an art film, the picture lacks sufficient action to sate the appetites of sensation seekers, but star Nicolas Cage's name means enough to offer some short-run B.O. traction and good home-viewing market returns.
Even though the original "Bad Lieutenant" was strictly cult fare, the title does carry a certain cultural resonance. The second American film to sport the NC-17 rating, Ferrara's film was ballsy, raw and drenched in Catholic guilt and renunciation motifs, as well as loads of explicit drug taking by a New York cop spiraling toward a personal hell.
Herzog isn't into much of the above; nor is he the sort of visual stylist keen to put his own imprint on the history of film noir or the detective genre. To the contrary, New Orleans is a bright, if blighted, city, and Herzog approaches it, as well as the depredations of the title character, with a straight face and unblinking lens, the better to catch a glimpse of the links connecting Katrina, the corruption of authority as seen through the outrageous behavior of the lieutenant, and the money, which lands mostly in the wrong places.
If one watched this movie without knowing the identity of the director, it would admittedly be difficult to give it much credit, since it is so indifferently made, erratically acted and dramatically diffuse. Not in 20 years or more has Herzog exercised the sort of formal control over his dramatic features that he has over his documentaries, and for a considerable stretch, it remains unclear how one is to assess the helmer's handling of vet TV crime writer William Finkelstein's pulpy scenario. The film is offbeat, silly, disarming and loopy all at the same time, and viewers will decide to ride with that or just give up on it, according to mood and disposition.
Already on Vicodin for back pain, Cage's Lt. Terence McDonaugh pursues the case of five Senegalese illegals rubbed out in an obvious drug-world hit. The search for their supplier takes place across some of the scuzziest stretches of the Big Easy, and all signs point to an elusive operator named Big Fate (Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner).
But all along, the mystery takes a backseat to the lieutenant's increasingly erratic behavior. Hunched over due to his back problems and customarily dressed in a slightly oversized suit with a large revolver stuck straight down the front of his pants, Terence resembles nobody so much as Nosferatu, the protagonist of one of Herzog's key films 30 years ago. At one moment, Terence is shaking down upscale clubgoers for their drugs and screwing their dates in front of them, then rushing to his unlikely prostie g.f., Frankie (Eva Mendes), for a coke antidote to the heroin he's accidentally snorted. He also, as in the original film, runs up a frightening debt with reckless sports betting.
Weird little interludes see Terence taking up again with a hot-to-trot former ladyfriend (a very good Fairuza Balk), assuming responsibility for a large dog and dumping him on Frankie, and participating in some bizarre shenanigans involving alligators and iguanas photographed in extreme, handheld closeup by Herzog himself.
Whatever else one might think of Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant," it was a story about wrenching guilt driven by personal demons, and Harvey Keitel fearlessly threw himself into the title role. The new film, which was backed by the same producer, Edward R. Pressman, betrays nothing close to such levels of deep commitment by either Herzog or Cage, who mostly bide their time with riffs on the narrative until close to the end. Once Terence hits bottom -- he's totally drugged out, put on suspension at work, owes a ton to his bookie, threatened by thugs and faced with losing his girlfriend -- the film gets giddy and ends up being, of all things, a fairy tale with a wrap-up no one would expect.
If Cage was looking for a vehicle in which his hyper-emoting would be dramatically justifiable, he found one here. Sometimes he's so over the top it's funny, which one can hope was intentional. Unfortunately, there's no rapport between him and Mendes, and their physical encounters seem so tentative as to resemble rehearsals. Val Kilmer is completely wasted as a fellow cop -- it's too bad Herzog didn't bother exploring the actor's capacity for comedy -- but Joiner exhales charisma as the rising drug lord Terence might consider joining rather than beating.
An unglamorized, sun-baked New Orleans is vividly presented for what it is, warts and all, but still exudes its particular flavor. Production values are average.

Apsolutno i bez sumnje.

There's film school. And then there's film school the Werner Herzog way.

In typical take-no-prisoners style, Herzog plans to teach guerrilla filmmaking, at a cost of $1,450 for a weekend, Jan. 8-10 in Los Angeles. And he's quick to caution the faint of heart to stay away from what he's dubbed the Rogue Film School.

"Censorship will be enforced," he says. "There will be no talk of shamans, of yoga classes, nutritional values, herbal teas, discovering your Boundaries, and Inner Growth."

Herzog -- whose credits include pics ranging from "Aguirre, Wrath of God" to "Grizzly Man" and the "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" -- warned applicants not to bring their laptops. Instead, he promises to offer insight into such areas as "the exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully" and "the neutralization of bureaucracy."

"The Rogue Film School is not for the faint-hearted; it is for those who have traveled on foot, who have worked as bouncers in sex clubs or as wardens in a lunatic asylum, for those who are willing to learn about lock-picking or forging shooting permits in countries not favoring their projects," he says. "In short: it is for those who have a sense for poetry. For those who are pilgrims. For those who can tell a story to 4-year-old children and hold their attention. For those who have a fire burning within. For those who have a dream."

In addition to those passionate insights, participants will receive a signed copy of Herzog's "Conquest of the Useless."

I also think it's interesting to note that the title screen calls it THE BAD LIEUTENANT. There's a THE in it. I think we finally found the missing THE from THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. Part 4 of that series was just FAST AND FURIOUS, because the first THE went to THE FINAL DESTINATION and the second one to THE BAD LIEUTENANT.
