Reno air race crash scene shows violence of impact

QuoteRENO, Nev. (AP) — The scene of a Reno air race crash that killed nine people reveals the violence of the plane's missile-like impact — a crater in the tarmac roughly 3 feet deep and 8 feet across with debris spread out over more than an acre.

From a tour of the site Saturday evening, it appeared that the 1940s-model plane went straight down in the first few rows of VIP box seats, based on the crater's location.

The plane hit about 65 feet in front of the leading edge of the grandstand where thousands were watching Friday as the planes sped by just a few hundred feet above the ground.

Some members of the crowd have reported noticing a strange gurgling engine noise from above before the P-51 Mustang, dubbed The Galloping Ghost, pitched violently upward, twirled and took an immediate nosedive into the crowd.

The plane, flown by a 74-year-old veteran racer and Hollywood stunt pilot, disintegrated in a ball of dust, debris and bodies as screams of "Oh my God!" spread through the crowd.

"I saw the spinner, the wings, the canopy just coming right at us. It hit directly in front of us, probably 50 to 75 feet," said Ryan Harris, of Round Mountain, Nev. "The next thing I saw was a wall of debris going up in the air. That's what I got splashed with. In the wall of debris I noticed there were pieces of flesh."

The death toll rose to nine Saturday as investigators determined that several onlookers were killed on impact as the plane appeared to lose a piece of its tail before slamming like a missile into the crowded tarmac.

The crash killed the pilot, Jimmy Leeward, and eight spectators. So far, two have been identified. Michael Wogan, 22, of Scottsdale, Ariz., had muscular dystrophy and was in a wheelchair the VIP section when the plane crashed, the family said Saturday. The Washoe County, Nev., medical examiner identified the other victim as Greg Morcom of Washington state, a first-time spectator at the show, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Officials said 69 people were treated at hospitals, including 36 who have been released and 31 who remain there. Nine were in critical condition late Saturday.

Doctors who treated the injured said it was among the most severe situations they had ever seen because of the large number of people wounded, including at least two children younger than 18 who are not among those in critical condition. Injuries included major head wounds, facial trauma and limb injuries, including amputations, doctors said.

"I've seen more patients, but never this many patients with this number of severe injuries," said Dr. Michael Morkin, chief of Renown's emergency department, who trained at Cook County General Hospital In Chicago.

"It was traumatic," he said.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were on the scene Saturday to determine what caused Leeward to lose control of the plane, and they were looking at amateur video clips that appeared to show a small piece of the aircraft falling to the ground before the crash. Witnesses who looked at photos of the part said it appeared to be an "elevator trim tab," which helps pilots keep control of the aircraft.

Reno police also provided a GPS mapping system to help investigators recreate the crash scene.

"Pictures and video appear to show a piece of the plane was coming off," NTSB spokesman Mark Rosekind said at a news conference. "A component has been recovered. We have not identified the component or if it even came from the airplane ... We are going to focus on that."

Investigators said they also recovered part of the tail section, where the tab is located.

Questions were raised, too, about modifications to the plane made to make the plane more aerodynamic so it would go faster without a bigger engine. In a podcast uploaded to YouTube in June, Leeward said major changes were made to the plane before this year's race. He said his crew cut five feet off each wing and shortened the ailerons — the back edge of the main wings used to control balance — to 32 inches, down from about 60 inches.

"I know the speed. I know it'll do the speed. The systems aren't proven yet. We think they're going to be OK," Leeward said.

The Mustang that disintegrated into the crowd had minor crashes almost exactly 40 years ago after its engine failed. According to two websites that track P-51s that are still flying, it made a belly landing away from the Reno airport. The NTSB report on the Sept. 18, 1970, incident says the engine failed during an air race and it crash landed short of the runway.

P-51 historian Dick Phillips of Burnsville, Minn., said Saturday the plane had had several new engines since then as well as a new canopy and other modifications.

Some credit the pilot with preventing the crash from being far more deadly by avoiding the grandstand section with a last-minute climb, although it's impossible at this point to know his thinking as he was confronted with the disaster and had just seconds to respond.

Investigators also said they'll be looking at the health of Leeward. Friends say the owner of the Leeward Air Ranch Racing Team was in excellent health.

His website says he has flown more than 120 races and served as a stunt pilot for numerous movies, including "Amelia" and "The Tuskegee Airmen."

The National Championship Air Races draw thousands of people to Reno every September to watch various military and civilian planes race. Local schools often hold field trips there, and a local sports book took wagers on the outcomes.

It is the only air race of its kind in the United States. Planes at the yearly event fly wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the ground at speeds sometimes surpassing 500 mph. Pilots follow an oval path around pylons, with distances and speeds depending on the class of aircraft.

The FAA and air race organizers spend months preparing for air races as they develop a plan involving pilot qualification, training and testing along with a layout for the course. The FAA inspects pilots' practice runs and briefs pilots on the route maneuvers and emergency procedures.

The crash marked the first time spectators had been killed since the races began 47 years ago in Reno. Twenty pilots including Leeward have died in that time, race officials said.

The disaster prompted renewed calls for race organizers to consider ending the event because of the dangers. Officials said they would look at everything as they work to understand what happened.

Another crash, on Saturday, came at an airshow in Martinsburg, W. Va., when post-World War II plane, a T-28, crashed and burst into flames. The pilot was killed.

Њујорк -- Америчке дипломате напустиле су седницу УН пошто је ирански председник Махмуд Ахмадинежад терористичке нападе на САД 11. септембра 2001. назвао "изговором". Он нападе наводи као изговор за америчке нападе на Ирак и Авганистан, пренеле су западне агенције.
Дипломате више западних земаља и САД напустиле су седницу Генералне скупштине Уједињених нација током говора иранског председника Махмуда Ахмадинежада.
Друге стране дипломате напустиле су седницу убрзо затим. Ахмадинежад је нападе 11. септембра окарктерисао као "мистериозне" и додао да су његова земља и он сам били изложени притиску америчке владе јер је затражио истрагу тог догађаја.
"Уместо да се формира тим за утврђивање чињеница, убили су главног починиоца и његово тело бацилли у море. Зар није разумније да су га привели правди", рекао је Ахмадинежад.
Ирански председник оптужио је САД и њене савезнике да "гледају на ционизам као свету ствар и идеологију".
"Користећи своју империјалистичку медијску мрежу која је под утицајем колонијализма они прете санкцијама и војним акцијама свима који доводе у питање холокауст и догађај 11. септембра", казао је Ахмадинежад.
У очекивано провокативном говору, који је већим делом био у облику питања, ирански председник је понудио анализу "из другог угла" садашње ситуације у свету, истичући да је корен проблема у постојећем светском поретку.
Међу питањима су била: Ко је отерао у ропство десетине милиона Африканаца, наметнуо колонијализам и пљачкао ресурсе других нација, ко је покренуо два светска рата и употребио атомско оружје против беспомоћних цивила, ко је деценијама подржавао диктаторе у Трећем свету, охрабрио Садама Хусеина да крене у рат против Ирана и снабдео га хемијским оружјем.
"Ако неке европске државе користе и даље холокауст као изговор да, шест децења после, плаћају одштету ционистима, зар не би требало да исту обавезу имају и власници робова и колонијалне силе према погођеним нацијама", рекао је Ахмадинежад.
Извор из француске делегације је рекао да је постојао координисан став дипломата ЕУ да напусте говор Ахмадинежада уколико "ирански председник доведе у питање европске државе због њихове 'подршке ционизму' и помене холокауст".

Butter, milk, cheese, pizza, meat, oil and processed food are now subject to the tax if they contain more than 2.3% saturated fat. Some consumers began hoarding to beat the price rise, while some producers call the tax a bureaucratic nightmare. Others suggest that many Danes will simply start shopping abroad. Danish officials say they hope the new tax will help limit the population's intake of fatty foods. However, some scientists think saturated fat may be the wrong target. They say salt, sugar and refined carbohydrates are more detrimental to health and should be tackled instead.

Inače pošto se govori zadnjih dana o milijardama koje ova država treba da isplati, zanima me da li je Nemačka, i u kom iznosu, platila za sva razaranja, porušenu imovinu i ubistva  koja je počinila na ovim prostorima 41-45 ? Da li je ijedna naša institucija makar ugrubo uradila okvirnu procenu te štete ? Ako neko ima ove podatke, volio bi da ih prezentuje. Pretpostavljam da je nešto plaćeno u onom čuvenom sporazumu Tito-Brant ?

France orders ISPs to block site showing police misconduct videos

The French court has ordered ISPs to block a website that posts videos of alleged police misconduct.

The court made the "right decision," said Jean-Claude Delage, secretary general of the Alliance Police Nationale, as the site is a "threat to the integrity of the police."

    Ankara said 22 battalions, or about 10,000 soldiers, were taking part in the operation in northern Iraq and also south-eastern Turkey.

    The troops – including commandos and paramilitary forces – are being backed by war planes and helicopters.

    On Tuesday, Kurdish PKK rebels killed 24 soldiers near the Iraqi border.

    The attacks in Hakkari province are thought to have inflicted the biggest loss on Turkish forces since 1993 and President Abdullah Gul has vowed to avenge them.

    In a statement on Thursday, the Turkish military said that 22 battalions were involved in the operation.

    It said the ground troops were being reinforced by F-16 and F-4 jets and Cobra helicopter gunships.

This will not result in large demonstrations in the streets of London, Early Day Motions in Parliament, interventions by charities and lobby groups, UN resolutions, conferences at universities, calls for boycotts and sanctions, aid convoys, or anything like that.

It appears to be largely unnoticed.

Last year, Erdogan promised that the Kurdish rebels would "drown in their own blood".

Densely-linked cluster of 147 companies control 40% of world's total wealth

The network of global corporate control (PDF), a study published in PLOS One, analyzes the ownership structures of the world's corporations and finds a tightly-knit cluster of 147 entities control 40 percent of the world's wealth. Not only is this creepy inasmuch as it puts a lot of power into a small number of hands, but it also suggests that the governance of much of the world's wealth is closely correlated, so one disaster could sweep like wildfire across them all:

    The work, to be published in PloS One, revealed a core of 1318 companies with interlocking ownerships (see image). Each of the 1318 had ties to two or more other companies, and on average they were connected to 20. What's more, although they represented 20 per cent of global operating revenues, the 1318 appeared to collectively own through their shares the majority of the world's large blue chip and manufacturing firms - the "real" economy - representing a further 60 per cent of global revenues.

    When the team further untangled the web of ownership, it found much of it tracked back to a "super-entity" of 147 even more tightly knit companies - all of their ownership was held by other members of the super-entity - that controlled 40 per cent of the total wealth in the network. "In effect, less than 1 per cent of the companies were able to control 40 per cent of the entire network," says Glattfelder. Most were financial institutions. The top 20 included Barclays Bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and The Goldman Sachs Group.
