A detective comes across a paper-maker who may or may not be a renegade mass murder in director Peter Ho-sun Chan's latest film, to be released in the U.S. under the title "Dragon."

CANNES -- Bursting with light and color, and a torrent of martial arts action both swift and savage (arguably the best that lead actor Donnie Yen has choreographed for years), Wu Xia is coherently developed and stylishly directed by Peter Ho-Sun Chan to provide unashamedly pleasurable popular entertainment. Wu Xia created buzz before its premiere with acquisition by The Weinstein Company, which will release the title stateside as Dragon. Almost as picturesque as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the film has a chance of expanding overseas audience base beyond Asian genre ghettos.

Set in 1917, on the cusp of China's transition from monarchy to republic, Wu Xia depicts the internal moral struggles of a detective and a paper-maker who may be a renegade mass murderer. Unfolding like a noir mystery in which Colombo meets CSI. It represents Chan's ambition to bridge the gap between Chinese and international tastes by giving a modern spin to the genre, while paying homage to the golden age of Hong Kong martial arts films through the special appearances of legendary action star Jimmy Wang Yu and Kara Hui.

Donnie Yen plays the said paper-maker Liu Jinxi, who has settled in an idyllic, hospitable village in Yunnan for ten years after marrying single mother Ayu (Tang Wei). The peaceful life of his family of four is disturbed when he accidentally kills two robbers who threaten his paper workshop. The incident has detective Xu Baijiu (Takeshi Kaneshiro) sniffing in his backyard. Xu is convinced that Liu's real identity is Tang Long, a runaway member of the 72 Demons, a dwindling clan of Tanguts (former rulers of China's neighboring Xixia kingdom) for whom rape, pillage and massacre are a way of life.

What makes the exposition novel in the genre is the attempt to peel away layers of oriental mystique surrounding martial arts through Xu's quasi-scientific or homeopathic theories of investigation, such as forensic science, physics, acupuncture and qigong, which also adds an endearingly nerdy side to his character. However, the CG-rendered charts of human anatomy are used too frequently until they interfere with the flow of action.

As a self-conscious homage to the brawny, starkly violent martial arts films of which Chang Cheh's classic One Armed Swordsman series (starring Jimmy Wang Yu) is exemplary, Yen's devises close-contact combats with a graphic, muscular, vicious style that aims to kill with a single strike. The three act structure each showcases a climactic combat in distinctly different styles. Liu's fight with a female Tangut (Kara Hui) is the most inventive, as it takes place in an ox pen where they have to skirt nimbly, yet dangerously around a stampede of buffalos.

After going through the motions in a recent string of dramatically unsatisfactory works, Yen and Tang both return to acting form, emoting in a quietly stirring manner. Aubrey Lam's subtle and understated script not only affectingly depict the pure but steadfast bonds of a simple family, but capture the neurosis of both Liu and Ayu, who separately grapple with their scarred pasts and fear that happiness is transient. The most fascinating character, however, turns out to be Xu, for whom the investigation becomes a personal moral and intellectual quest, in which he weighs the impartial efficacy of law against natural human compunctions of remorse and compassion. He too has to exorcize demons from the past, thus deepening the theme of redemption, which applies to Xu as well as to Liu.

Jake Pollock's luscious widescreen cinematography adds a dash of fairytale color to the moist, glossy rolling hills, meadows and bamboo bushes of the ethnically-rich Yunnan countryside. While hard rock score of Peter Kam and Chan Kwong Wing (the composing duo of Bodyguards and Assassins, produced by Chan) tends to be too relentlessly energetic at times, sound is used expertly for maximum threatening effect, especially in the presence of the chief of the 13 Demons (Jimmy Wang Yu).

Kim Ki-duk's one-man show examines why he is now at an impasse after creating 15 internationally distributed and awarded films.

The glorious agony of struggling directors is a theme that's been around for as long as filmmaking itself. Kim Ki-duk's Arirang explores the reasons and emotions behind his three-year hiatus like a no-tech documentary answer to Fellini's 8 1/2. A one-man production in which Kim engages in deep conversation with himself, his shadow, recorded images of himself and excerpts of his screen performances, it is so navel-gazing it makes Takeshi Kitano's Takeshis and Glory to the Filmmaker seem positively self-effacing.

Never a reliable commercial bet, this will be Kim's least theatrically saleable work. The sour, malcontent attitude may be his devious way of playing up his bad-boy image to the cine-literati, but there's precious little with which even an arthouse-inclined audience can identify with.

Kim begins with self-examination of why, after making 15 films that were internationally distributed and awarded, he has reached an impasse. He initially attributes it to trauma from an accident on the set of his last film, Dream, but gradually, it transpires that what's holding him back is not creative block but financial.

In a swearing session delivered with machine gun speed and aggressiveness, he rants and riles at moviegoers, investors, protégés who in some way or other betrayed him. It culminates in a wish-fulfillment revenge spree that is funny for its anti-production-value statement.

Snippets of his hermitic mountain life become welcome diversions. As if he's getting in touch with the primal instincts that characterize his protagonists, he camps in a tent inside a hut, makes simple meals and has fun with self-reassembled espresso and drip coffee machines. His primitive yet meticulous and creative handiworks reveal more about his unique style as a filmmaker, than the self-indulgent shots of his handwritten scripts, posters of his films and his oil paintings.

Kim also provides the score by belting out Arirang in a coarse but plaintive voice. This most famous of Korean folksongs expresses an abandoned woman's feelings: She misses her lover even as she curses him. Although it's obvious Kim identifies with her bitter lament, there is a tinge of pathos when he says "I miss all the film festivals I've been to." The subtext being: he really misses filmmaking itself.

Filmed using a Mark II digital camera, Kim arranges the shots to make his monologues look like dialogues between — or commentaries on — two or three personas. Although sometimes the edits and compositions look casual, the overall technique is professional.

CANNES -- The push by Hollywood studios to make local-language movies and profit from the gold rush in booming international territories has reached the Cannes Film Festival, where two titles playing in Un Certain Regard are from Fox International Productions.

Sanford Panitch launched FIP three years ago with the goal of making commercial films in territories including India, Japan, China, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Korea, Argentina and Mexico. The idea that some of those titles are now hitting the major festival circuit is icing on the cake for Panitch and his team, which includes Rebecca Kearey, who was recently promoted to executive vp marketing and distribution for Fox International after a long stint at Fox Searchlight.

Miss Bala, a drama about a young woman thrust in the center of the Mexican drug wars, drew strong reviews when premiering here last week. Gerardo Naranjo directed the film, which stars Stephanie Sigman. Fox International is planning an early September release in Mexico, and is also mulling a limited U.S. run.

Korean film The Yellow Sea, directed by Na Hong-Jin, debuts Wednesday night on the Croisette. The thriller tells the story of a cab driver living in Yanbian province, a region between North Korea, China and Russia, whose wife goes missing in Korea. His life spirals downhill, until a hit man approaches him with a plan that will reunite him with his wife and resolve his gambling debt, but the plan goes horribly wrong.

Yellow Sea is already a box office hit in South Korea, grossing $17 million (the movie was made for $7 million).

"There has never been a Korean movie produced and distributed by a Hollywood studio," said Panitch, adding that he's signed a development deal with Hong-Jin.

It was Panitch who sought out Hong-Jin two years ago after noticing that the director's film Chaser was beating Fox's Jumper at the Korean box office.

On the eve of Cannes, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment announced the formation of Fox World Cinema, which will work in tandem with Panitch's division and make festival titles like Yellow Sea available in the U.S. on DVD, VOD and digital download.

In addition to Yellow Sea, Fox World Cinema's initial slate includes Chinese film The Butcher, The Chef and The Swordsman, Indian film Dum Maaro Dum and Vallanzasca: Angel of Evil.

"Fox has always championed films that transcend language and social differences," Panitch said in announcing the new venture. "In recent years, American audiences have embraces successful foreign films such as Pan's Labyrinth and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The universal themes represented with Fox World Cinema will be appreciated by film lovers everywhere."

Pogledao sam dokumentarni film KIMJONGILIA N.C. Heikin.

Plot:
A family moves into the suburbs of Gyunggi-do. A while later a girl named Mi-rim goes missing and chaos takes over the village. Mi-rim's father searches for his daughter and while visiting the police station he stumbles upon a criminal record from one of the family members that just moved. Mi-rim's father and the villagers threaten and pacify Sejin and his family.
The film follows the genre conventions of a thriller yet it also contains people's prejudices and oppression. Sejin's past record as a convict rids him of his individuality and his sister is on the brink of losing her job as a kindergarten teacher. The film questions what is true violence. The result, violence does not just include person to person, but can be silent brought on by a community that leads to a sacrifice of an individual. Such is the typical mechanism, murdering individuality through the violence of a group. (LEE Sang-yong)

Spike Lee ("Inside Man," "25th Hour") is currently in talks to direct the Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook´s acclaimed 2003 cult smash "Oldboy" at Mandate Pictures reports Twitchfilm.

The original film detailed a man's mysterious kidnapping, 15-year imprisonment and feverish quest for revenge upon being released. Attempts at a remake have been underway since the first film's release with the likes of Justin Lin and Nicolas Cage pursuing one version, later Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were tipped to be teaming for the project.

Both previous versions fell apart. Signs of life began to seep back into the project late last year and now Lee's name has become linked. Mark Protosevich ("Thor," "I Am Legend") penned the script while Doug Davison and Roy Lee are producing.

I u određenom smislu kada krene osveta, ubijanje čekićima, sekirama, pajserima, gedorama i ostalim alatom, to je sve jedan produžetak ranog Chan Wook Parka drugim sredstvima.

Children (2011)

Children (2011) Trailer

There were high expectations for the movie "Children..." even before it hit theaters. Although the cast of well-known actors like Park Yong-woo and Seong Dong-il has drawn attention to the film, it is the story's plot that has generated the most interest.

The film is based on a true yet unsolved murder case from the early 1990s that is known among Koreans as the "disappearance of the frog children." In 1991, five elementary school students told their parents that they were going to hang out on a nearby mountain to catch frogs. They never came back.

Director Lee Kyoo-man, a rising star in the Korean film industry, is expected to present a compelling depiction of the case.

In style, "Children..." resembles the 2003 hit "Memories of the Murder," which was based on another unsolved mystery of a serial killing in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, in the early '90s.

July 28, 2011 – Los Angeles – CJ E&M Pictures and Grapevine Entertainment have attached Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) to direct 1950, the largest budgeted project ever undertaken by the Korean film industry, at $100m. Production is expected to begin in May 2012 with a planned release date of spring 2013. An untold story of courage and endurance during the Korean War, 1950 is an epic adventure, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning dispatches from the front line by legendary New York Herald Tribune correspondent Marguerite Higgins.

1950 is being produced by CJ E&M Pictures of Korea and Grapevine Entertainment, alongside Brett Donowho and executive producer Paul Hudson. The producers developed the story, and commissioned a screenplay from Rachel Long and Brian Pittman (Silver Falls and Stranded). Marguerite Higgins, the Tribune's then Far East bureau chief, who had covered the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps at the end of WWII, initially found herself banned by the US Army top brass from covering the Korean conflict, simply because she was a woman. Her persistent efforts to overturn this ruling eventually won her special permission from General Douglas MacArthur to work alongside the front line troops.

1950 follows Higgins' journey across the Korean peninsula with a platoon of marines, ending with the mass evacuation on Christmas Eve of nearly 200,000 South Korean civilians escaping the oncoming Chinese and North Korean armies.

CJ and Grapevine are in discussion with A-list Hollywood and Asian talents to fill the key leading roles of Marguerite Higgins, the leader of the Marine platoon, Captain Darren, and a Korean Katusa, Sunjae Lee. Grapevine and CJ are in advanced negotiations with a major worldwide distribution company to handle the release of the film outside of Korea, which CJ will handle.

CJ E&M Picture's Head of International Financing and Production, Sean Lee said "While 1950 is based on a very special event in Korean history, we are confident that CJ and GV can elevate this tale into a film that will resonate with the audience worldwide." His enthusiasm was echoed by John Han of Grapevine Entertainment, in announcing the project, remarked, "We are proud and excited to bring to the screen in a major motion picture the story of this remarkable, brave and pioneering woman, who now lies buried alongside Presidents and heroes in Arlington National Cemetery."

Rob Cohen welcomed the opportunity to direct 1950. "The Korean War has often been referred to as 'the forgotten war' and I think it's time it was remembered. Telling the story of this harrowing conflict through the eyes of pioneering journalist Marguerite Higgins makes it a very different war film on every level." Cohen's directorial credits include xXx, Stealth, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
