The jury's still out on whether Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D is going to contain more real horror than cheesy '80s-style comedy, but according to the director it should be a perfect mix of both. As he said in a recent interview, "Yes, it's super gory; yes, it's super scary; but it's also super fun."

Synopsis:
A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself."

As part of MTV News' week of 3D film coverage, Aja recently chatted with them about the perils of converting his film to 3D rather than shooting with 3D cameras, breaking records for the most blood ever spilled in a film, and why he insists on having 3D nudity onscreen. Here are a few highlights:
# We decided to go 3D three years ago. It was kind of obvious that a revolution was coming with "Avatar" ... I understand why James Cameron in "Avatar" didn't want to make the 3D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience.
# I was very, very skeptical about the 3D conversion, because it felt so unnatural to create 3D when it's flat at the beginning. I saw a lot of demo reels, like some of the James Cameron "Titanic" conversion scenes, some of "Star Wars," and 20 minutes of Peter Jackson's "King Kong" fully converted into 3D, and that was simply the best 3D I've ever seen ... I was sold. And in addition to that, because all of our piranha are CG, they are all real 3D in the computer. Our movie is going to be completely converted, but a big chunk of it will be real 3D as well.
# MTV asked Aja if he's setting a record for most blood or most boobs in a movie. His response: I think we broke both records. I want to know exactly how many different girls' boobs are in the movie. I think it's a lot. I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.
# Finally, Aja promises, There's going to be 3D double-D boobs! When I'm making a movie, I always think about the movie I would love to see.

Come August 27th we'll see if the director made the movie the fans would love to see.

Debbie Gibson, za razliku od aviona i Golden Gejt mosta, nije bila pojedena od strane ajkule (a ni oktopoda). Međutim, nosač aviona je izgleda najebao...

The Asylum's Mega Piranha is wonderfully retarded... Move over Piranha 2: The Spawning; these mutant piranha don't have wings, but they sure do fly, leaping out of the water at great heights and distance to get at their prey with reckless abandon. They smash into buildings, often leading to explosions or the hysterical image of a multi-story building with a fish tail flapping out of it... The spectacle of a mega piranha attack is less like a feeding frenzy and more like giant fish hopped up on dope going on a destructive drug-fueled rampage... What ultimately brings about the demise of the mega piranha is nothing short of mind-boggling. Not so much because of matters of implausibility so much as to why it didn't happen on several occasions much earlier in the film when similar circumstances were present. The recycling of the same visual effect shot over and over further compounds the confusion. A strangely unsatisfying conclusion made all the worse by the last shot being that of two characters that previously displayed absolutely no inklings of romance sharing a first kiss. I would have bought into Paul Logan soul kissing Greg Brady before he would Tiffany, all things considered... By the way, these piranhas can sink battleships by biting through metal hulls and can jump whole land masses with a single bound, but they can't find a way through or around trees and woods damming a river? Of all the logic gaps that didn't add up, that was the one that stuck in my craw the most.

One thing you'll never be watching Mega Piranha is bored. You might feel a bit drained afterwards... On the other hand, stellar acting, top notch special effects, logical storytelling: none of these will be found in Mega Piranha.

Mega Piranha has a lead actor bicycle kicking leaping piranha on land and underwater successfully fending off a school of piranha with only a knife because the toothy fish choose to attack one at a time like bad guys in a kung fu movie. Mega Piranha has gigantic piranha biting battleships into submission and chomping helicopters out of the sky. Mega Piranha has a guy's head explode after being shot in the mouth with a flare gun. Every last bit of it is done without so much as a wink to let the audience know it's aware of how absurd this all is. That sublime ridiculousness is something you either are going to have fun with, or Mega Piranha is simply not for you.

Ma, i to je sve deo zabave i rekao bih da se namerno išlo na taj ne 100% ozbiljan pristup, ali ne toliko u postmodernističkom 90's maniru već više u fazonu nekih od najzabavnijih 80's horora, kao što je to Fright Night npr. Odnosno, to je moj osećaj na osnovu ovog trejlera, a pretpostavljam da Aža zna šta da radi i kakav film rimejkuje i da je nije slučajno tu smestio i Drajfusa i Lojda. Osamdesete su se vratile, in a good way!

You know it's refreshing when actors, filmmakers and marketers don't pretend to put on airs and pretty much say straight up that the piece of exploitative cinematic trash they've made and/or are promoting is, well, a piece of exploitative cinematic trash.

Actor Richard Dreyfuss, who has a small role in the film, tells Hollywood News that the only reason he took a role was because the Weinstein's wrote a huge cheque to his civics initiative at TheDreyfussInitiative.org.

Meanwhile two viral tie-in sites for the film have recently launched. One's a flat ad for an energy drink called Pirana NRG.

The other however is the more blatant TheWildWildGirls.com, a 'Girls Gone Wild'-inspired little site featuring Jerry O'Connell's character Derrick, Eli Roth's wet t-shirt judge and photos of various ladies topless or in wet t-shirts.

There's also a 22-second video of O'Connell bleating like an idiot mixed with some topless bed jumping and random lesbian making out. It's actually relatively tame, but probably still not safe-for-work though.

MEGA PIRANHA je MEGA užasan film. Uz to i podosadan. Okej, jeste bolje od poslednjih nekoliko Asyluma na koje sam bacio pogled, ali ipak prilično razočaravajuće. Očekivao sam više. Tiffany neodoljivo podseća na Marinu Perazić, a glavnom baji kao kao da su uradili lobotomiju. Ako ništa, bar je doveo trušnjake do savršenstva. (Baja, ne Tiff.)

Elem, odustao sam posle prvih 45 minuta filma i ne verujem da ću mu se vratiti.

Alexandre Aja says his 3D re-working of Joe Dante's 1978 original is an attempt to recreate the 'guilty pleasure movies' of his youth. So here, in the best/worst traditions of '70s exploitation cinema, are flesh-eating fishy gore, lip-smacking nudity and lots of laugh-out-loud silliness. If you're looking for the anti-establishment message found in the John Sayles' scripted, Roger Corman-produced 'Jaws' rip-off, you will be disappointed. However, the re-make's cheesy, eye-popping 3D effects – flayed bodies, naked breasts, vomit and a severed penis are all flung out of the screen - are an authentic, affectionate throwback to cheapo Cormanesque excess.

When an underground earthquake releases shoals of prehistoric piranha into Lake Victoria, local sheriff Julie Forester (Elizabeth Shue) tries in vain to persuade several thousand Spring Break revellers to quit their aquatic hedonism before they become fish food. Meanwhile, her son Jake (Steven R McQueen) has been lured onto a pleasure boat by slimeball porn director Derrick (Jerry O'Connell) and busty, bikini-clad 'star' Danni (British 'glamour model' Kelly Brook). Also aboard is nice girl Kelly (Jessica Szohr), on whom Jake has a crush, who ends up licking tequila, salt and lime off the body and lips of Danni's co-star Crystal (real-life porn star Riley Steele). But once the fishy feeding frenzy starts, it's human flesh that's on the menu.

Aja serves up the tongue-in-cheek thrills, CGI-enhanced gore and gratuitous nudity with such unabashed relish that this may prove to be the summer's break-out horror hit. There are also nice cameos from Richard Dreyfuss, reprising his 'Jaws' role, and 'Hostel' director Eli Roth, who completely loses his head after hosting a wet T-shirt contest. A guilty pleasure? Guilty as charged.

You know what's great? Boobs. You know what's also great? Richard Dreyfuss. You know what makes those other two things even greater? Killer fish. What movie has all of these things and more? What About Bob? Fuck no. PIRANHA 3D.

I should preface this review with the scientific fact that I over-praise aquatic monster movies so naturally I went ape-shit for this flick. If you don't have an appreciation for the underwater mayhem, nature run amok sub-genre, though, then this movie isn't for you. However, if everything I've said so far has tickled your fancy, my god Piranha 3D is a gift from the heavens.

The film is set on the sleepy little Lake Victoria in Arizona. A lake that is invaded every year during spring break with scantily clad women, raging drunk douchebags, sex, drugs, and rock and roll. All the good things in life. And every year it's up to the town's local sheriff department, headed up by Julie Forester (Shue), to ensure the safety of the drunken idiots and their wonderful wet T-shirt contests. Something is different this year, however. Due to some strange seismic activity, an underwater cave cracks open and unleashes jaws ... lots and lots of jaws. At this point the furious prehistoric piranha begin to make their way around the lake until ultimately showing up at the massive spring break orgy that's taking place. While this story doesn't seem all that new, the movie knows exactly what it's going for and revels in its ridiculous nature run amok bloody goodness.

Piranha 3D ReviewFor a movie of this kind of cheesy proportion, the acting is surprisingly very solid. Everyone goes in knowing what the film is and has fun with it. Elisabeth Shue rocks as always, and Ving Rhames is the ultimate badass (and could indeed be considered the Obama of Piranha). There's also a surprise performance from Kelly Brook, who plays British bombshell Danni (one of the "Wild Wild Girls"), who instead of just being a ditzy chick with big boobs actually has some ethos and pathos (for a killer piranha movie anyway) with big boobs. The two lead kids, "The Vampire Diaries"'s Steven R. McQueen (yes, there is a relation) and "Gossip Girl"'s Jessica Szohr (as Jake and Kelly, respectively), while usually irritating in this kind of film, are tolerable and have some rather good scenes together.

The cast standouts, though, are Adam Scott (from the hilarious show "Party Down") as the seismic scientist guy who also happens to be a badass with a quick wit; Christopher Lloyd as Doc Bro ... I mean Doctor Goodman, the prehistoric piranha expert (great scott!); Jerry O'Connell as Derrick Jones, the douchey yet utterly hilarious "Wild Wild Girls" host; and Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper. Yes, you read that right. Richard Dreyfuss reprises his role as Hooper from Jaws in a killer piranha movie. While the credits may have him as Matt Boyd, he is singing "Show me the way to go home" at one point and is dressed as Matt Hooper (denim and all). If there is one reason to see this movie, that's it. Well, that and Jerry O'Connell, who literally had me in tears every time he was on screen. Now these aren't Oscar-winning performances by any stretch, but for a film about killer fish in a lake, they are damn entertaining and just all around fun.

Piranha 3D ReviewFor being a post-conversion 3D movie, 's 3D is excellent. They didn't exactly have the budget for 3D while shooting, but it was always the intention to have the film in 3D so they shot it as such. You have piranha flying out of the screen as well as boat propellers, breast implants, bloody body parts, and a lone penis. And it all looks beautiful. With any Alex Aja movie the cinematography is top-notch. This one has a wonderful warm glow to it that contrasts well with the bloody gore. And while the piranha are all CGI, the gore effects are practical and look insanely awesome thanks to the talents of KNB Effects. The pacing of the film is well done and moves quickly with a cool running time of 90-something minutes. It never drags, and there is always a kill every fifteen minutes or so. Aja definitely knows how to keep a film entertaining.

In all honesty, this is the best movie of the summer, if not my favorite horror film of the year. It literally has every single thing you could ever want in a movie. Killer fish? Check. A slow motion underwater make-out scene set to the classic song "Flower Duet" between two naked women? Check. Ving Rhames shooting said killer fish with a shotgun? Check. Jerry O'Connell in a Speedo? DOUBLE CHECK. It's a great movie to see with a crowd as you will be cheering, screaming, laughing, and gasping at the levels of insanity that this flick throws at its audience. When the shit hits the fan, it really hits, and it hits hard. Also, for a theatrical release it has more boobs in it than a late night Skinamax marathon. Hell, there is porn out there with less T&A.

Run, don't walk or swim to see this movie. It's a bloody good time and sure to be a crowd favorite. I give it 5 out of 5 spring break tits, Jerry O'Connell coke lines, exploding Eli Roth heads, and, yes, 5 out of 5 fucking knives.
