Letting Up Despite Great Faults - Letting Up Despite Great Faults



To say that it never rains in Southern California might be an overstatement, but it's still an unexpected pleasure to hear something so unmistakably autumnal from the season-challenged state. Letting Up Despite Great Faults, a Los Angeles-based band, effectively capture an overcast mood with "In Steps", the opening track from their forthcoming self-titled album. Layering lush synth and a shimmering New Order guitar tone, "Steps" prettily evokes the tipping point from full bloom to slow decay, as the warm summer days give way to a wet, windy fall. While the shoegaze-y indie pop of M83 probably represents the closest contemporary reference point, Letting Up's melodic sensibility is distinguished by careful and decisive plotting-- save for the muted, billowing vocals. Overall, "Steps"' subtle shading suggests maybe there really is no such thing as an endless summer, even in Southern California.

Arms And Sleepers - Matador



Arms and Sleepers are a duo of comprised of Max Lewis (Boston, MA) and Mirza Ramic (Portland, ME). Formed in 2006, they have produced multiple albums, EPs and hand-made releases, most notably the Bliss Was It In That Dawn To Be Alive EP (Fake Chapter, 2006) and the well-received Black Paris 86 (Expect Candy, 2008).

Matador is an album studded with varying themes and textures. The synergy between a haunting sonic mix and delicate, ethereal lyrics yield an ambitious, precise whole. Maintaining consistent intensity and energy, the music and artwork both reflect the moodiness behind the concept of the album, which can be summarized as a reaction to the surroundings and circumstances Max and Mirza found themselves in throughout the past two years. Matador also finds the duo expanding on their sound, reaching for a new and fresh direction. Vocals are more prominent throughout the album than with previous releases, and the band ventures into new soundscapes, incorporating an expansive array of instruments.

Leave it to the unpredictable Mark Oliver Everett, a.k.a. E, to spend four years working on 12-track album Hombre Lobo and then produce another 14 songs just seven months later. End Times, his band Eels' eight full-length studio release, is a return to reality for Everett, who's calling it his "divorce album." The artwork, beautifully illustrated by graphic novelist Adrian Tomine, depicts a somber-looking man with a long gray beard standing in a street at night; since Everett's known for his impressively long facial hair, this could be a glimpse at a self-predicted morose future. Just scanning the tracklist reveals the depressing narrative of Everett's relationship with ex-wife Anna: the album kicks off with songs "The Beginning" and "In My Younger Days," and it grows tense with "A Line In The Dirt," "End Times" and "Unhinged." But there's hope for the frequently troubled songwriter; the ultimate track, called "On My Feet," suggests there may be emotional peace for Everett soon.

Ruby Throat – Out of a Black Cloud Came a Bird

Multifaceted singer-songwriter, performance/installation artist and poet, Katiejane Garside found fame (and chart success) as the singer with the influential early-Nineties indie band Daisychainsaw, issuing a number of singles before disbanding, after which Garside reunited with ex-Daisychainsaw member Crispin Gray to form QueenAdreena. Since then she has collaborated with a diverse collection of musicians (members of the Sugarcubes, Mínus, Hector Zazou to name but a few). Most recently Katiejane has been recording and touring as part of Ruby Throat. With a bipolar folk noir soundscape, the poetry of a slow unravel, and the ghost of a barren desert blues, Ruby Throat offers an experience of emotional fragility.

The Magic Theatre - London Town



The album concept developed over 4 years of discussions, plans and songwriting, culminating in orchestral recordings with The Slovak Radio Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. The album is a time-travel love story set in 1968 and 1888, where the young 60s hero falls through a hole in time in The Magic Theatre in the Old Victorian Steam fair, to find his one true love in 1880's London. The songs follow the story one chapter at a time, charting their meeting and ultimate tragic separation. But beyond the story the album is many other things. It is a reflection on love, loss, growing old and acceptance set against a metaphorical backdrop of the changing seasons. With spring comes optimism and youth; summer comes with love and togetherness; autumn brings uncertainty and loss and finally comes winter and old age but also acceptance. Musically the sounds are chosen from those of 1968 and 1888, but not in a pastiche; the eras are synthesized into a natural and timeless emotional halo. It also marks a pinnacle of achievement for Dan and Sophia – after 20 years' recording experience, an end to experiments; the chance to look back and finally show the best of what they've learned and what they love in a focused, concentrated form. In the process they've created the best productions, songs, tunes and lyrics of their lives, where the meaning of the words is fully woven into the nuances of music and sound.

The Knife - Tomorrow in a Year



Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book 'On the Origin of the Species', The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.

'Tomorrow, In A Year' is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins's gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin's loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.

Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of 'Tomorrow, In A Year' in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as "shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap", further performances of 'Tomorrow, In A Year' are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.

Olof Dreijer says: "At first it was very difficult as we really didn't know anything about opera.  We'd never been to one. I didn't even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera's essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We've approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way."

Na ovlašno preslušavanje zvuči ubedljivo kao Autechre, ali naravno, njihov zvuk je sad toliko kanonizovan (i pored svoje kompleksnosti) da nije nemoguće zamisliti da je neki posvećeni poštovalac napravio ploču koja će zvučati kao Ae iako nije Ae a da se to koristi da se zbune mase pirata.
