Bodyguards and Mother lead Asian Film Award nominations

Teddy Chan's Bodyguards And Assassins and Boon Jong-ho's Mother both scored six nominations, including best film and director, for the fourth Asian Film Awards.


The nominations, announced on January 20, also saw Park Chan-wook's Cannes winner Thirst and Lu Chuan's City Of Life And Death receive four nominations each, also including best film. The remaining contenders in the category are Brillante Mendoza's Lola, Leon Dai's No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti and Parade by Isao Yukisada.

The 14-person jury will be led by Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Kar-fai. Other jury members include Christian Jeune, director of film department and deputy director delegate at the Cannes Film Festival; Tokyo Film Festival programme director Kenji Ishizaka; Christophe Terhechte, head of the Forum sidebar at the Berlinale; Noah Cowan, artistic director at the festival centre Bell Lightbox; and film-maker Park Ki-yong, who is also head of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). The awards will be held on March 22 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. 

AFA will be as the Opening Gala of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong and will coincide with two other events of the 34th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), and the 8th Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF).

Trejler isporučuje. Ja sam prvi koji će reći da se Tony možda malo zaleteo sa režiranjem sopstvenih filmova (Pinkaew je ipak znatno bolji režiser pa je zato i Ong Bak bolji film od Ong Bak 2) ali nije da mi Ong Bak 2 nije prirastao srcu. Od trojke očekujem spektakularnu katarzu i sve što ide uz to. Iz trejlera bi se reklo da su Rittikrai i Jaa napustili ideju o borcu koji više nema kosti, mada "he was destroyed" sugeriše da možda i nisu i da će ovo zaživeti u jednom momentu filma. Vidim da se i Mum Jokmok vratio u kast, što me raduje pošto njega volim, ali pitam se kako će njegov komedi sajd-kik prsoneliti da se uklopi u dramatično ozbiljnu atmosferu Ong Bak 2/3...

A, vidiš, jeste. Sad me baš zanima da li će imati istu ulogu u trojci ili će dobiti novu rolu. Bilo bi kul da je nešto novo i da Toni dobije komik rilif saradnika.

Meni je prvi Ong Bak bio daleko intrigantniji, mada sam uživao i u drugom, ali samo na nivou koreografije, kao neki guilty pleasure. Ako mi prvi liči na filmove Brusa Lija, drugi je više u tradiciji Tarzana.

Pa, prvi je urbani gangsterski film, drugi je bajka, što ih po definiciji čini drugačijim iskustvima. Meni je po istoj toj definiciji prvi mnogo bliži ali razlika je svakako i u tome što Jaa naprosto nije režiser (za razliku od Prinkaewa) plus imao je tokom snimanja onaj "mali" brajkdaun kada je pobegao u džunglu i nije se pojavljivao mesecima, plus novčani brejkdaun... Dakle, nije bilo lako... Tako da je zaista na nivou kostima, scenografije i koerografije bio impresivan, ali kao film, kec je znatno bolji.

Set in 1961 China – "a turbulent time," according to the opening title - True Legend quickly dispenses with history lessons to deliver dark intensity and kung fu fighting sequences from the master of wuxia himself, Yuen Woo-ping. Touching on a famous Chinese legend for the third time in his career - his 1978 film Drunken Master launched Jackie Chan in Hong Kong, while Heroes Among Heroes was also a hit in 1993  – Yuen has again chosen a lead (Vincent Zhao) for his fighting skills above all else.

True Legend successfully blends the straight-faced, bone-crushing action of golden-age Hong Kong martial arts movies with the lush romance and landscapes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Streamlined to four classic kung fu battles and one long classic 'mountain training' sequence, True Legend opened in China on February 14, aiming at the lucrative Lunar New Year market. Darker and lacking the antics normally associated with the kung fu master who fights best while drunk, True Legend features top class choreography and wire work which could well make a strong impact in the international marketplace.

Shot partly in 3D, it takes the novel approach of flashing little icons up on the screen to tell viewers when to put on their 3D specs, a device which allows the costume drama and the rural landscapes of the bridging scenes to be filmed in lush traditional widescreen, while the 3D fireworks are reserved for action sequences.

Su Can (Zhao) is a noble general and war hero who gives up a military career to return to his young wife Ying (Xun) and have a son. But Ying's evil foster brother Yuang (On) has never forgiven Su's father for killing his own biological father. Yuang has been coaching himself in the dark art of 'the five deadly venom fists', which he uses to kill Su's father and take his sister and Su's young son hostage.

The scene is set for Su's two battles with Yuang. Poisoned by his nemesis after the first, Su is saved by Ying, and the two end up in the mountain refuge of a herbal healer played by Michelle Yeoh. Here, his fighting spirit broken, Su takes to the bottle – but is soon back in training again, helped by a mysterious whitebeard with long flowing eyebrows (veteran martial arts actor Gordon Liu) and The God of Wushu (Asian pop idol Jay Chou) – though Ying soon discovers that these masters exist only in Su's alcohol-soaked imagination.

Su will soon prove his worth though – only to lose what he holds most dear. This tragedy sets the scene for the film's final half hour, which can feel a little tacked on given that True Legend appears to already have completed its dramatic arc. But the showstopping last fight, in which the down-and-out, drink-addled Su takes on a group of huge Russian wrestlers – managed by a gambling den owner played by David Carradine in one of his very last roles – makes it all worthwhile

True Legend successfully blends the straight-faced, bone-crushing action of golden-age Hong Kong martial arts movies with the lush romance and landscapes of a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, playing to a core male audiences with fight sequences and that are so well staged they don't need flashy editing to work. It doesn't confuse us with dynasties but taps into legend, fairy tale and nightmare to stand up a strong dramatic structure. And it looks ravishing.

KAMUI is a Ninja on the run from the world of Ninja bound by rules in search of true freedom. Fledgling LA-based producers Madmedia Entertainment have hired Journey To The Center Of The Earth director Eric Brevig (pictured) to direct the Korean War drama 17 Days Of Winter.


The story charts the 1950 Chosin Reservoir battle, a brutal 17-day encounter in which 12,000 US Marines known today as the Chosin Few faced sub-zero temperatures and a Chinese enemy that outnumbered them ten to one.

17 Days Of Winter will shoot on location in Korea. Producer Charlotte Huggins and the executive producers are in talks with screenwriters and are eyeing a 2012 release.

In an unexpected move the Minister Of Culture, In Chon Yu, and the Chairman of the Korean Veterans Association, Se Hwan Park, have backed the project.

"We pledge our unconditional support, including making use of equipment, weapons, shooting sites and military assistants in Korea," Park said. "It is our wish to be part of the process to educate and raise awareness throughout the world on the noble achievements and honorable sacrifice made by all Korean War veterans."

"The story of this forgotten war needs to be told," Brevig, whose upcoming credits include Yogi Bear for Warner Bros, said. "We now have the ability to tell it in an immersive, compelling way that does justice to the humanity exhibited under such inhumane circumstances."

"The state of technology, the unprecedented popularity of the 3-D medium and the 60th anniversary of the Korean War have aligned to make this the perfect time to tell this incredible story of salvation," Madmedia founder Jayson Won, who will serve as executive producer, said.

Brian Iglesias, a decorated Marine Captain and director of the documentary Chosin, will also serve as executive producer.

Weirdness abounds in this double feature of subversive takes on the superhero genre that aren't nearly as clever as the word "subversive" makes them sound.

Female Combatants Battle School

Well, there are female combatants and they do attend battle school, so you can't fault them for false advertising. What do these female combatants learn in their battle school? The moves to take out a masked female superhero who's been dispatching some serious beatings to her antagonists as of late.

A secret agent attempts to infiltrate the Dark Mist organization, which is the primary hive of villainy, outfitting its evildoers (all female) in leather and sending them out to get kicked in the face repeatedly. She finds out it's a hard life being a flunkie.

Can a movie with a synopsis like that and the title Female Combatants Battle School be anything less than awesome? Oh yes, it can. The possibilities for henchmen amusement are there—just watch a random episode of The Venture Bros.—but the sad sacks behind Combatants poop out a bizarre and, worse, boring effort. The big fight scenes? Awful, featuring jumpsuit-wearing extras shrieking out the most annoying sound you've ever heard and engaging in terrible hand-to-hand combat. And the "plot" that holds it together is even more forgettable, witless and flat.

Demonic Heroine in Peril

Said demonic heroine is actually an assassin, charged with a formidable assignment: killing the "Trionger," a trio of aging Power Rangers-types who can barely fight a dispensable goon without throwing out their backs. She's not going to have much trouble smiting them—but then she befriends their sidekick, a freaking young boy with a plastic face and a mouth that doesn't move (seriously). Now fighting on the side of the good and the decrepit, she will use her considerable fisticuff acumen to take on the bad guys.

Heroince is far better than the Combatants, but it still falls short of being something interesting and worth checking out. It's definitely more bizarre, in that fun and slightly off-putting way that the Japanese have mastered. The villains don red afro wigs and plastic faces of their own and have pudgy male thugs dressed in uncomfortably skintight one-pieces. Plus, the torture scenes go on for some time.

While it's nice to get all manner of eccentricity from the Land of the Rising Sun, this double feature fails to measure up. Female Combatants is a complete waste of time. Demonic Heroine in Peril is redeemed only because of its ludicrousness.
