Synopsis/ Plot
Aboard the Japanese crab ship 'Kanikosen' equipped with a cannery facility, workers are forced to labor under pitiful conditions at minimum wages. Some even die of cruel labor and malnutrition. And to top it off, the factory superintendent Asakawa (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is the most brutal sort who does not treat the workers as human beings.

Shinjo (Ryuhei Matsuda), one of the workers, persuades the others that they should wish to become rich in their next life as there is no future for them in the present. So all of them try to commit suicides, which ends up in a comedy of errors. SHINJO then escapes the Kanikosen and is rescued by a Soviet vessel. He is astonished by the new social system on the vessel that is so much different from the one he left behind. In realization, Shinjo returns to the ship to save the others.

Plot/Synopsis

Hard Revenge Milly Bloody Battle The story starts in the devastated rogue city of Yokohama, surrounded by rubble. The third film from experimental Hong Kong filmmaker Scud, Amphetamine is the story of a doomed love affair between a gay man and an emotionally damaged straight man which, while always visually arresting, ultimately rings hollow. The film is certainly flashy – filled throughout with two second flashbacks, dreamlike imagery and fantasy sequences – but its self-conscious artiness dilutes the potential dramatic impact and it plays as more stylistic curio than full-blooded character piece.

    Amphetamine has its best shot of profile on the gay and lesbian film festival circuit and its best sales chance is to niche distributors tapping into gay audiences on DVD and TV.

The film had its world premiere in Panorama at the Berlinale this year and is one of the closing night films at this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival.  But, peopled as it is by beautiful men in various states of undress and embrace, Amphetamine has its best shot of profile on the gay and lesbian film festival circuit and its best sales chance is to niche distributors tapping into gay audiences on DVD and TV.

The lead character is Kafka (Pang), a fitness instructor who works several jobs to support his ailing mother. Although he has a girlfriend, his sexuality is apparently fluid since he agrees to a hand-job from a dirty old man in a changing room. He and his slacker brother are also amphetamine addicts.

Just as he is breaking up with his girlfriend, he meets handsome finance executive called Daniel (Price), an out gay man from Australia in Hong Kong on business. Daniel falls for Kafka and pursues him confidently, even while Kafka tells him that he is straight and they can never have sex.

But their love for each other grows, despite the hurdles – the sexuality difference and Kafka's addiction – and the two men become convinced that love will conquer all. Daniel tries to help him off the amphetamine after a close call with the Chinese authorities but he doesn't know the whole story and Kafka is harbourin dark secrets from his past, which might prove insurmountable.

Scud teamed up with veteran director Lawrnce Ah Mon on the direction of the film and enlisted cinematographer Charlie Lam (Isabella, Exodus) to shoot it. On the one hand, the film's attempts at visual expressiveness are striking. The visual design is striking - the persistent water or angel motifs, scenes of Kafka's martial arts routines, the lingering shots of the men's hard bodies. And the narrative drifts in and out of dream and memory lend a certain druglike quality to it.

On the other hand, Scud's focus on the superficial is jarring and much of the film doubles as an affluent lifestyle commercial. If they are not racing each other in sports cars and motorbikes or bungee jumping off motorway bridges, the men are splashing handsomely in the pool and gazing at each other's muscular bodies in the shower afterwards. That's not to mention Daniel's limitless wealth which includes stunning Hong Kong penthouse and rooftop Jacuzzi. By showing us these glam trappings at such length and with minimal irony, it appears that Scud himself is seduced by them himself.

Plot/Synopsis

72 Tenants of Prosperity (72家租客) is a 2010 Hong Kong comedy film by Shaw Brothers Studio, Television Broadcasts Limited, United Filmmakers Organization, Sil-Metropole Organisation and Sun Wah Media Group. Directed by Eric Tsang and starring Tsang, Jacky Cheung and Anita Yuen. It was released in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand on 11 February 2010. In 1970s Hong Kong, rapacious landlords try to evict 72 tenants but sworn brothers Ha Kung and Shek Kin help the group of 72 defeat the landlord and landlady and coincidentally rescue Pinky from a planned forced marriage. When both sworn brothers fall for Pinky and propose to her, she flips a coin heads or tails and Ha wins her hand in marriage. The sworn brothers become sworn enemies and Sheks hatred fuels intense rivalry against Ha in business dealings ranging from the manufacture of plastic flowers to the selling of stinky bean curd. Even after 40 years they continue to clash and in 2010 they are in keen competition selling electronics appliances in Sai Yeung Choi Street, Mongkok, the busiest street in the city and still home to the 72 tenants. In fiercely competitive Sai Yeung Choi Street high rents force businessmen to use every means to survive, with electronics shops employing pseudo models in sales promotion campaigns and comic shops offering foot-massage services by Lolita, etc. These ploys are minor compared with the tactics of the landlord who threatens to close down the shops unless his demands for triple rental are met. Amidst this strife and struggle the street is hit by acid-attacks and in high spirits the 72 tenants unite and pledge to safeguard their home. Against a background of fear and turmoil, with the old love triangle between Ha and Pinky and Shek still festering, the next generation of the Ha and Shek families embarks on their own heroic love affairs: MJ-style dancer Ha Junior is fascinated by Shek's daughter who is a Japanese AV culture fan; Ha's daughter, a kung fu maiden, is pursued by Shek's love-struck son, the smart shortie. Affairs of the heart yet to be resolved.

A sleazy thriller about a serial killer who slaughters sex tourists, "Slice" is a notch above the average Thai slasher pic, but has trouble cutting through its knotty yarn. Offering queasy delights for gore hounds and an initially suspenseful atmosphere, the story runs off its circuitous rails before getting back on track with a genuinely surprising twist. Despite an apparent stance to the contrary, pic's homophobic elements will make Western remake an iffy proposition. "Slice" opened to lackluster Thai B.O. but positive critical response in October, and will be popular with genre fests abroad.

Grindhouse helmer-scripter Kongkiat Komesiri ("The Art of the Devil" sequels) adapted "Slice" from a story by Wisit Sasanatieng (writer-director of "Tears of the Black Tiger"), with whom he collaborated on the 2006 gothic horror pic "The Unseeable."

After an unsettling opening shot of a red suitcase floating in the ocean, a similar suitcase is delivered to a man's hotel room. Before the man can use a young boy to fulfill his desires, a red-cowled figure intervenes, murdering the would-be perp before adding a shocking finishing touch.

Corrupt cop Lt. Chin (Chatchai Plengpanich, in an absurd white wig that brings Jim Jarmusch to mind) is baffled by the string of murders. Chin turns to imprisoned ex-cop Tai (Arak Amornsupasiri), who acts as Chin's undercover assassin as penance for a police hit gone wrong years before. Plagued by red-suitcase nightmares, Tai suspects a childhood friend may be connected to the crimes and negotiates with Chin for 15 days' freedom to unravel the mystery.

Heading back to his home village near Thai resort Pattaya, Tai finds that the further he digs, the more his suppressed childhood memories -- involving the persecution of an effeminate boy -- come to the surface. Dwelling far too long on the flashbacks, the yarn begins to chase its tail and labor its points about bullying, and it takes far too much delight in scenes of abuse to make its ostensible anti-homophobic stance seem anything but disingenuous. Inventive finale delivers a convincing wallop, but the film would still benefit from a hefty trim.

Komesiri's helming varies from pedestrian to stylishly proficient, even cribbing the circular pan from Kenji Mizoguchi's famous "Ugetsu" at one point. Lensing (handled by Komesiri and Thanachat Boonlah) capitalizes on bloody and lurid story elements to create a sleazoid atmosphere.

Amornsupasiri gives a strong perf as the ex-cop investigating murders as well as his own past. All other perfs meet Thai horror standards, as do the rough but typical tech credits.

Pic garnered several noms including best film at the Subhanahongsa Awards, Thailand's film kudos, which at press time had been postponed due to political unrest.

Feudal China gets a dash of spaghetti Western atmosphere in "14 Blades," an above-average martial-arts actioner that reinforces Donnie Yen's "Man With No Name" ambience. After a halting start, helmer Daniel Lee follows through on the improvement he showed in 2008 wuxia epic "Resurrection of the Dragon." Stylish package has thesps hitting their marks (and each other), but also keeps the human drama from being swamped by wirework and CGI effects. Pic has done brisk biz on the mainland and other Asian territories since February; international ancillary should also be robust.

In China during the Ming Dynasty, Qinglong (Yen, covered in Blue Dragon tattoos as per his character's name) is an assured martial artist who leads the emperor's band of crack assassins, called the Jinyiwei. The film's English title refers to Qinglong's personal arsenal, a large oblong box of 14 sharp weapons and other handy accessories he wields with a nimble mastery.

Qinglong is ordered to keep the royal seal from falling into the hands of a vengeful insubordinate (Sammo Hung, in a cameo), thereby keeping China from plunging into civil war. On Qinglong's trail is Tou Tou (Kate Tsui), a veiled, dreadlocked warrior woman whose emblematic cloak allows her to dazzle her opponents in combat (and to showcase the finesse of a South Korean f/x team).

Making his way toward the border, Qinglong encounters aging patriarch Qiao Yong (Shaw Brothers vet Wu Ma, perfect), his feisty daughter, Qiao Hua (Zhao Wei), and their loyal bandits. After receiving help from the old man and his band, Qinglong kidnaps Qiao Hua but makes sure she's well looked-after.

Despite the circumstances, Qiao Hua falls in love with her captor, a development made believable by Zhao's warm and affecting perf. Yen's Eastwood-like poise is used to good effect here, and the romantic tension keeps the narrative effectively taut between the battle sequences.

Action scenes, staged by Ku Huan-chiu, are unobtrusively helmed. Standout fight scene, in which Qinglong, armed only with chicken bones, takes on an array of bandits, also provides the pic's most humorous sequence.

Lensing is a tad flat, but action fans are unlikely to be distracted. Some intriguing costumes of Islamic influence, reflecting Qinglong's westward journey, provide a visual high point.

Rousing score by Henry Lai continues the musical allusions he began in "Resurrection of the Dragon," recalling Ennio Morricone's compositions for the films of Sergio Leone. No editor was credited on print caught.

Synopsis:

A meteor crashes into the desert of Sto. Sepulcro. The town blacksmith, Flavio, forges a dagger and a churchbell from the remains of the meteor. He uses the dagger to fight off the evil Sombra Oscura, who constantly attacks the town. By some mystical power, the dagger transforms into a great sword every time Flavio wields it.

In his final battle against evil, the Panday faces off against Lizardo, the son of the devil and the leader of the Sombras. The battle is intense, but Flavio prevails in the end, vanquishing Lizardo.

Having saved Sto. Sepulcro, Flavio decides to give up his sword. He goes to the church and casts his fabled weapon into the bell he also made. A white light then shoots out from the sky, and it lifts up Panday into the heavens.

The people of Sto. Sepulcro rejoice now that Panday has brought them peace. Unbeknownst to them, the Sombras discover that there is a part of Lizardo that is still alive - his brain.

In order to bring him back to life, they must transcend time and space to look for the girl who can resurrect their master.

Plot/Synopsis

Kaiji Ito moves to Japan after graduating from high school. Unable to find a job and frustrated with society at large, Kaiji spends his days gambling, vandalizing cars, and drinking booze.
Two years later and his life no better, a debt collector named Endo arrives to collect money. The debt collector then offers two choices to Kaiji: spend 10 year paying off your loan or board a gambling boat for one night to repay your debt & possibly make a whole lot more. Synopsis / Plot
Kidd (Andy Lau) a police officer from the year 2080 and his wife Millie (Bingbing Fan) are summoned to protect Dr. Masterson (Jingwu Ma), who is known as the "Father of Solar Energy" due to creating a cheap method to replace fossil fuel with solar energy. Because of Dr. Masterson's creation, oil tycoons have made several attempts on the life of Dr. Masterson. The Special Force of the police department has received credible information that an army of humanoids (half-man/half-machine) led by Kalon (Siu-Wong Fan) & Fiona (Yifei Tang) are set to ambush Dr. Masterson at the Convention Center.

At the Convention Center a fierce battle ensues that leaves Kidd's wife Millie and all of the humanoids dead, except for Kalon & Fiona.

The oil tycoons then steal the secrets of time travel to send revamped 2.0 versions of Kalon & Fiona to the year 2020 to murder Dr. Masterson when he was a 12 year old kid.

The government learns of the oil tycoons plans to go back in time and this is when Kidd volunteers to have radical surgery to transform himself into a bionic man with mechanical arms and legs. He then travels back to 2020 with his daughter Kiki, who will go to the same school as the young Dr. Masterson. Kidd works as a police officer in 2020, to avoid suspicion of his background, while fellow police officer Holly (Barbie Hsu) becomes attracted to Kidd. Knowing he will go back to 2080 after his mission is complete he is unable to return Holly's affection for him.
