'Legalised bank robbery' as EU plans to raid savings in Cyprus

Quote
Markets and savers across Europe have been left panicking as a plan to take money directly from private citizens' savings accounts nears fruition.

Not only have returns on savings been awful for years, the money itself is now at risk after the terms of an EU bailout have come to light in Cyprus.

The announcement at the weekend that Cyprus would impose a tax on bank accounts as part of a €10 billion bailout sent a shiver across the EU seeing customers queuing to withdraw their cash, the euro to tumble and stock markets dive.

Residents on the island emptied its cash machines to get their funds over the weekend.

"Essentially parliament is called to legalise a decision to rob depositors blind, against every written and unwritten law," said Yiannakis Omirou, speaker of Cypriot parliament and head of EDEK, the small Socialist party.

The worst fear is that savers in other European countries could become nervous and start withdrawing funds, creating a continent-wide bank run.

"Despite reassurances from Brussels that Cyprus is a special case and that indiscriminate levies won't be a common policy tool, depositors across Europe are doubting their sincerity and are fearing that a new precedent has been set for other debt-laden euro zone countries," Jonathan Sudaria, dealer at Capital Spreads, said.

"It's as if the Europeans are holding up a neon sign, written in Greek and Italian, saying 'Time to stage a run on your banks!'" US economist Paul Krugman wrote in The New York Times.

Politicians in Cyprus are voting on the deal on Tuesday.

How has it come to this?

The deposit tax is part of a bailout agreement reached this weekend after talks by finance ministers from euro countries and representatives of the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.

In exchange for €10 billion (£8.6 billion) in rescue money, creditors would impose a one-time tax of 6.75% on all bank deposits under €100,000 euro (£86,500) and 9.9% over that amount.

Cypriot banks got into trouble after losing some €4.5 billion (£3.9 billion) on their Greek government bond holdings after eurozone leaders decided to write down Greece's debt last year.

The raid on savings is expected to raise €5.8 billion (£5 billion) to recapitalise the nation's banks and service the country's debt.

The government says Cyprus has no choice but to accept the bailout with the levy on deposits, or it will go bankrupt.

Are British savings at risk?

After Icelandic banks defaulted leaving tens of thousands of British savers at risk, the UK government has rushed to protect Britons from this latest assault on savings.

The Government in London has said it will guarantee the deposits of its military service members stationed there, while there is no effect on deposits with Bank of Cyprus UK Limited which is a UK bank.

However, the UK ex-pats with money in Cypriot bank accounts could well be hit along with other residents of the island and some foreign investors.

Russians hardest hit

Wealthy Russian depositors have put vast sums into Cyprus's banks in recent years, seeing Russian president Vladimir Putin describe the savings raid as unfair and setting a dangerous precedent.

"While assessing the proposed additional levy on bank accounts in Cyprus, Putin said that such a decision, should it be made, would be unfair, unprofessional and dangerous," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Russian citizens account for the majority of the billions of euros held in Cypriot banks by foreign depositors, and Russian banks are heavily exposed to the island as a favoured offshore centre for big business.

There are almost €70 billion in deposits held in Cyprus. A little less than half that is held by non-residents, most believed to be Russian.

That figure is more than twice the size of the bailout, which had been repeatedly delayed amid concerns from other EU states that the close business and banking ties with Russia made Cyprus a conduit for money-laundering.

It ranks as the largest source of foreign direct investment into Russia - money that is largely Russian in origin.

Moscow is considering extending an existing €2.5 billion loan to help bail the island out.

Will it definitely happen?

Faced with a growing public backlash, the government was working on a plan to soften the blow to smaller savers, by tilting more of the tax towards those with deposits greater than €100,000.

A source close to the deal told Reuters authorities were hoping to cut the tax to 3% from 6.7% for deposits under €100,000. The rate for deposits above that would then be jacked up to 12.5% from 9.9%.

Approval in the 56-member parliament is also far from a given: No party has an absolute majority and three parties say outright they will not back the tax.

Savers who lost money would be compensated by shares in commercial banks, with equity returns guaranteed by future revenues expected from natural gas discoveries. But many politicians remain unconvinced.

a bez stednje nema investicija, pa ce doci do pada privredne aktivnosti.

Drugo, i kad se ovo zavrsi, tesko ce se vlasnici kapitala stimulisati na stednju,
jer ce se pribojavati nekog slicnog poteza. Kapital ce bezati u drustva gde vladaju stabilniji institucionalni uslovi.

Final Destruction, Inevitable Fate of United States

QuoteThe United States is accustomed to be overconfident in its strength. It has been a hotbed for its arbitrariness and tyranny. Its arrogance has reached the extreme pitch.
However, the situation is different in the confrontation with us. It had knelt down before our people already in the Korean War in 1950s. It is inevitable for it to repeat the same failure.
We have made full preparations for nearly 60 years for the confrontation with the United States.
Since the ceasefire, our people have all along leveled guns at the US imperialists. Under this circumstance, we have not neglected the work of increasing defence capacity even a moment under any economic conditions, good or difficult. We need not to conceal the fact that our independent munitions industry has reached a high stage capable of defeating any anti-DPRK hostile forces today.
In the confrontation with us, the United States will be lack of military hardware even though it mobilizes all it has made since the Second World War.
Analysts foresee that if the United States is defeated in the confrontation with the DPRK, it will sustain tremendous economic losses only to become a third-class nation. It is unimaginable for the United States, which has achieved economic development over last scores of years.
Recently, the United States decided to change even the European missile defence system and allot one billion US$ to hold in check our missile attack. With this can they resist our missile attack with unpredictable and precision striking capacity?
Same is in the case of nuclear warfare. The number of nuclear warheads does not decide the victory and defeat in the war. The problem is technology and war method.
We are not afraid of the DPRK-US confrontation even though nukes will be applied to by the United States. Our army will counter the enemy with matchless precision nuclear striking means and nuclear war method of our own style. We will settle accounts with the United States not by words but by arms.
The world community will clearly see how our army and people who are convinced of the justness of their cause and turn out in the struggle for safeguarding sovereignty will emerge victorious.

Kim Jong Un Convenes Operation Meeting, Finally Examines and Ratifies Plan for Firepower Strike
QuoteThe moves of the U.S. imperialists to violate the sovereignty of the DPRK and encroach upon its supreme interests have entered a grave phase.

Not content with letting B-52 make sorties over south Korea in succession despite the repeated warnings, they made B-2A stealth strategic bomber and other strategic strike means fly from Whiteman air force base in Missouri State, the U.S. over south Korea on March 28 for the first time in history to commit such dangerous provocation as openly staging a drill for striking ground targets of the DPRK.

This fully proves that the brigandish ambition of the U.S. imperialists for aggression to stand in confrontation with the DPRK has reached an extreme phase defying the meaningful warning made by its revolutionary armed forces in the March 26 statement of the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army.

In view of the prevailing grim situation, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Marshal Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, convened an urgent operation meeting on the KPA Strategic Rocket Force's performance of duty for firepower strike at the Supreme Command at 00:30 on Mar. 29.

Present there were Hyon Yong Chol, chief of the KPA General Staff, Ri Yong Gil, director of the Operation Bureau, Kim Yong Chol, director of the General Reconnaissance Bureau, and Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Rocket Force.

At the meeting he first received a report from General Kim Yong Chol, who is also vice chief of the General Staff of the KPA, on the information about the nature of action of the nuclear strike means of the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces.

After receiving a report from Lieut. General Kim Rak Gyom on the technical conditions of the strategic strike means of the KPA, he made an important decision.

He said he has judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation.

If they make a reckless provocation with huge strategic forces, the KPA should mercilessly strike the U.S. mainland, their stronghold, their military bases in the operational theaters in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in south Korea, he said. He examined and finally ratified the plan of the Strategic Rocket Force for firepower strike.

The U.S. imperialists let B-2A make sorties over south Korea in succession, indicating once again that their hostile acts against the DPRK have entered a reckless phase, going beyond the phase of threat and blackmail, he said.

B-2A's flight to the sky above south Korea is not a simple demonstration of forces in reaction to the tough stand of the DPRK but an ultimatum that they will ignite a nuclear war at any cost on the Korean Peninsula, he noted, underlining the need to put a definite end to the times when they could threaten and blackmail the DPRK with nukes.

He declared the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK would react to the U.S. nuclear blackmail with a merciless nuclear attack, and war of aggression with an all-out war of justice.

He finally signed the plan on technical preparations of strategic rockets of the KPA, ordering them to be standby for fire so that they may strike any time the U.S. mainland, its military bases in the operational theaters in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in south Korea.

He said the enemies are bringing dark clouds of a nuclear war testing the DPRK's self-restraint, adding the DPRK can no longer tolerate this. He ordered the KPA to blow up and reduce everything to ashes at a single strike, if an order is issued.

He said the heroic service personnel of the KPA and all other people, their hearts burning with irrepressible resentment at the reckless war provocation moves of the U.S. imperialists, are now waiting for a final order of the WPK Central Committee, hardening their will to turn out in a do-or-die battle with the enemies.

The KPA will never remain a passive onlooker to the U.S. imperialists' frantic moves for aggression but do its best to defend the destiny of the country and nation, he said.

It is the truth confirmed by history that no force on earth can hold in check the people all out for the just cause, he noted, stressing if an undesired war breaks out on this land again due to the consequences of the unpardonable action of the U.S. imperialists, it will bring them a shameful ruin and the Korean nation will greet the bright day of national reunification.

The important decision made by him under the grave situation where the Korean Peninsula has been pushed to the brink of a nuclear war by the U.S. imperialists will mark a turning point in putting an end to the history of the long-standing showdown with the U.S. and opening a new phase of history.

Bitcoin, navodno, ostvaruje veliki zalet zahvaljujući kiparskoj krizi itd.

Digital 'bitcoin' currency surpasses 20 national currencies in value

Quote
More than $1 billion dollars worth of a digital currency known as "bitcoins" now circulate on the web – an amount that exceeds the value of the entire currency stock of small countries like Liberia (which uses "Liberian dollars"), Bhutan (which uses the "Ngultrum"), and 18 other countries.
So what is a "bitcoin," and why would anyone use it?
Unlike traditional currency, bitcoins are not issued by a government or even a private company. Instead, the currency is run by computer code that distributes new bitcoins at a set rate to people who devote web servers to keep the code running. The bitcoins are then bought and sold for regular U.S. dollars online.

Bitcoin is in high demand right now -- each bitcoin currently sells for more than $90 U.S. dollars -- which bitcoin insiders say is because of world events that have shaken confidence in government-issued currencies.
"Because of what's going on in Cyprus and Europe, people are trying to pull their money out of banks there," Tony Gallippi, the CEO "BitPay.com," which enables businesses to easily accept bitcoins as payment, told FoxNews.com.
In Cyprus, the government is considering taking a percentage of all citizens' bank accounts to solve its fiscal woes. That has led Cypriots -- and other Europeans worried about the same thing happening to them -- to take their money out of banks.
"So they buy gold, they put it under the mattress, or they buy bitcoin," Gallippi said.
Bitcoin demand has also increased, Gallippi says, because last week U.S. regulators issued the first official guidelines for private digital currencies. Prior to the regulations, the legal status of the currencies was in doubt.
"Now people can see that it's not illegal, that it's not banned," Gallippi said.
Bitcoin is controversial because the currency can be exchanged anonymously online -- it is in a sense the digital equivalent of using hard cash -- and so some have criticized it for facilitating online drug markets. On the site known as "the Silk Road," for instance, users pay bitcoins for illegal drugs and other forbidden items.

In a 2011 letter to the Attorney General, Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) argued for strict enforcement.
"After purchasing bitcoins through an exchange, a user can create an account on Silk Road and start purchasing illegal drugs from individuals around the world and have them delivered to their homes within days," the Senators wrote. "We urge you to take immediate action and shut down the Silk Road network."
But the Silk Road is still running, and a recent study estimates that $23 million dollars of illicit items are sold for bitcoins on the site every year.
The regulatory guidelines issued last week by the government agency known as the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), however, will not stop that.
The regulations say that digital currencies like bitcoin are to be treated essentially as foreign currencies. Companies that exchange digital bitcoins for real money will have to comply with the same regulations as traditional currency exchangers -- namely, they must verify the identity of anyone exchanging money for bitcoins and report large transactions to the government.
Using bitcoins to purchase goods, however, is specifically exempted.
"A user who obtains convertible virtual currency and uses it to purchase real or virtual goods or services is not... under FinCEN's regulations," the guidance reads.
Some bitcoin defenders say the use of bitcoins to buy illegal items shouldn't obscure the legal uses.
"With any technology... Criminals are going to use it for something, and regular people are going to use it for something," Gallippi said. "You can't ban cell phones just because criminals are using them to do drug deals. You can't ban e-mail just because people are using them to do phishing scams in Nigeria. You have to start just prosecuting people who are committing crimes -- you can't just completely wipe out the new technology."
Gallippi says one reason to use bitcoins for legal transactions is a lower risk of identity theft.
"If you are buying something online and you have the choice of paying with a credit card or bitcoins – think about what you have to do to use a credit card. You have to fill out this whole long form, name, address, account number, sometimes more... coincidentally, that's all the info a thief would need to steal to pretend to be you."
Between that, bitcoin's anonymity, and worries about conventional currency, bitcoin demand is as high as ever, according to Alan Safahi, who runs "Zip Zap" – a company that facilitates cash deposits at stores like CVS and Wal-Mart for transfer to a site that can convert the money to bitcoins.
"We're processing millions of dollars a month. We've seen tremendous surge in activity," he said.

Iran plans 'Islamic Google Earth'

Quote
Minister claims that Basir – Iran's version of the 3D mapping service – will be ready for use 'within next four months'

The Iranian authorities have long accused Google Earth of being a tool for western spy agencies, but now they have taken their attacks on the 3D mapping service one step further – by planning the launch of an "Islamic" competitor.
Iran's minister for information and communications technology, Mohammad Hassan Nami, announced this week that his country was developing what he described as an "Islamic Google Earth" to be called Basir (spectator in Farsi) which will be ready for use "within the next four months".
"Preparations have been made for launching our world's 3D map project and we are currently creating an appropriate data centre which could be capable of processing this volume of information," the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Nami as saying on Tuesday.
Nami, a former deputy chairman of Iran's joint chiefs of staff and the armed forces, was appointed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the new technology minister in February. Nami, who studied political geography in Iran, is also a PhD graduate in "country management" from North Korea's Kim Il-sung University, according to local media.
"We are doing our best to launch the Islamic Google Earth in the next four months as an Islamic republic's national portal, providing service on a global scale," he added.
"On the surface, Google Earth is providing a service to users, but in reality security and intelligence organisations are behind it in order to obtain information from other countries," Nami said.
Iran has often looked at western web services with a great deal of suspicion.
Other Iranian officials have echoed Nami in making similar accusations against Google. Iran's police chief, Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam, said last year that it was not a search engine but "a spying tool", according to Fars news agency. Web users in Iran can usually access Google but some features like Gmail or Google Earth have intermittently faced filtering. However, with suspected help from China, Iran blocks access to many search results. Access to more than 5m websites are blocked in Iran.
Speaking to the Guardian, two users in Tehran, using different internet service providers, gave opposing accounts of their access to Google Earth, one saying the virtual globe was accessible while the other one said it was blocked.
The minister, however, gave little information on what he meant by an Islamic 3D map. "We are developing this service with the Islamic views we have in Iran and we will put a kind of information on our website that would take people of the world towards reality ... Our values in Iran are the values of God and this would be the difference between Basir and the Google Earth, which belongs to the ominous triangle of the US, England and the Zionists [a reference to Israel]."
Experts, however, have serious doubts about the project. An IT consultant who has worked on Iran's national internet project in the past said the announcement was merely an excuse to obtain funds and secure working contracts for the future.
"They have claimed to run their service in four months and said their data centre capacity will reach Google's size in three years," he said. "Three-year project, no business model and only relying on government funding, a piece of cake indeed ... To have a data centre with such capacity and security level they need power stations, cooler systems, bandwidth, etc, which will require billions of dollars of investment that doesn't fit with Iran's sanctions-hit economy."
Nami's time in office will also expire in June when Ahmadinejad steps down as president and new elections are scheduled to take place. "I believe they are aware of the project's restrictions and their capabilities. They are only looking for the budget and upcoming contracts," the expert said. Another expert said Nami's remarks amounted to no more than an April Fools' Day joke.
Last year Iranian authorities said they had completed the initial phases of a national internet, a countrywide network aimed at substituting services run through the world wide web.
Iran's national internet project has prompted fears among web users that authorities might be planning to pull out of the global internet, but some experts believe that they are creating it to secure the regime's own military, banking and other sensitive data from the outside world.
Amin Sabeti, an Iranian media and web researcher based in London, said he signed up for a national email account on the country's newly-launched mail.iran.ir service four months ago, which required some unusual personal information for registration, but has not heard back and is still waiting for his national email to activate.

Virtual Bitcoin Mining Is a Real-World Environmental Disaster

Quote
Here's a puzzle: How can a virtual currency, existing in digital form on computer hard drives, demand real power and real fuel, and have real-world environmental costs? If you're struggling to think of an answer, welcome to the world of "Bitcoin mining."

As a lot of folks know now, thanks to all-hands-on-deck media saturation, Bitcoin is a medium of transaction created in 2009 by an anonymous programmer to facilitate anonymous digital transactions (there's an excellent history here). In the recent speculative mania, the value of Bitcoins skyrocketed. Before Bitcoins can be traded, though, they need to be created.
That's where "mining" comes in. Mining is a process in which powerful computers create Bitcoins by solving processor-intensive equations. The idea is to keep the supply of Bitcoins from multiplying too quickly. Bitcoin mining, like mining of precious metals, is supposed to be arduous. By design, the more miners there are, the more processing power is required to mint new coins.
Most people aren't used to thinking in terms of the energy it takes to solve math problems; a few minutes of Excel may not take much energy. But make the problems complicated enough, and things change. "Mining" Bitcoins takes so much processor power that it's often done with specialized computers optimized for rapid repetitive calculations. So how much power can that take?
Blockchain.info, a site that tracks data on Bitcoin mining, estimates that in just the last 24 hours, miners used about $147,000 of electricity just to run their hardware, assuming an average price of 15 cents per kilowatt hour (a little higher than the U.S. average, lower than some high cost areas like California). That, of course, is in addition to the money devoted to buying and building the mining rigs. The site estimates the profits from the day of mining at about $681,000, based on the current value of Bitcoins. So mining, at least for the moment, is a lucrative business.

The trade-off here is that as virtual value is created, real-world value is used up. About 982 megawatt hours a day, to be exact. That's enough to power roughly 31,000 U.S. homes, or about half a Large Hadron Collider. If the dreams of Bitcoin proponents are realized, and the currency is adopted for widespread commerce, the power demands of bitcoin mines would rise dramatically.
If that makes you think of the vast efforts devoted to the mining of precious metals in the centuries of gold- and silver-based economies, it should. One of the strangest aspects of the Bitcoin frenzy is that the Bitcoin economy replicates some of the most archaic features of the gold standard. Real-world mining of precious metals for currency was a resource-hungry and value-destroying process. Bitcoin mining is too.
