By far the biggest of a slew of pics celebrating New China's 60th anni, "The Founding of a Republic" is a cannily assembled, smoothly made chunk of political filmmaking. Perhaps realizing that few Chinese would line up nowadays for a regular "official" production, China Film Group topper Han Sanping (who shares the main helming credit with Huang Jianxin) has turned "Founding" into the most lavish star-spotting game in mainland cinema history, marbled with a few Hong Kong cameos for good measure. Pic isn't likely to get Western distribution anytime soon, but on several levels is worthy of attention.

"Founding," which swamped local screens Sept. 17, has officially passed Feng Xiaogang's 2008 romantic comedy "If You Are the One" as the biggest grossing Chinese film ever, with a whopping 334 million yuan ($49 million) in its first 20 days. The film could surpass "Titanic" as China's all-time B.O. champ by the end of its run, though local spy whodunit "The Message" started taking over screens in late September. In Hong Kong, "Founding" took a surprising $700,000 in its first five days.

Traversing most major (and a few minor) events in the gradual victory of the communists over the nationalists from August 1945 to October 1949, the pic adopts the usual format of datelined scenes, with characters introduced via captions. However, this time the fast-forward format -- largely consisting of men meeting in rooms -- is leavened by a fair amount of light comedy and actors who go beyond merely spouting historical background and political standpoints.

Most notably, a genuine dynamic emerges between communist leader Mao Zedong (Tang Guoqiang) and KMT head Chiang Kai-shek (Zhang Guoli). Seemingly reflecting the contempo detente between China and Taiwan, Chiang is treated as more than a simple villain. An early scene of the two meeting in Chongqing to talk terms after the end of the Sino-Japanese War in 1945 stresses that both were disciples of Sun Yat-sen, who set up the country's first republic in 1911.

The film could be the first of its kind to get a release in Taiwan -- early next year -- if statements by the Taiwan government are to be believed. However, some scenes -- especially a late one in which Chiang confesses to an officer (Andy Lau) that "the KMT has been ruined by our own hands" -- may prove too bitter a pill for even the island's current KMT administration to swallow.

Tang, the latest in a huge number of lookalikes to Mao, has a twinkly-eyed slyness that chimes well with Zhang's excellent perf as the unbending Generalissimo Chiang, who slowly realizes he's losing the game to a player who's even smarter than he is. On a secondary level, Xu Qing, as Sun's widow Soong Ching-ling, and Vivian Wu, as Chiang's wife Soong May-ling, powerfully portray the ice-cold ruthlessness of two sisters who deem power a right rather than a privilege.

Performances like these, and those of others such as Liu Jin as Mao's admired deputy, Zhou Enlai, create character arcs that help to bind the succession of small scenes into a greater whole. Though considerable material disappeared during the final edit (as well as other cameos, like John Woo's), the pic manages to take some time out with more extended sequences -- notably the nationalists' bombing of Mao's hideout in Yan'an -- that humanize the players.

For movie geeks bored with the politics, the pic is a cameo-spotter's paradise: There's Jet Li as a naval officer, Jackie Chan as a Hong Kong journalist, and Zhang Ziyi as a young communist in a women's group photo, to name just a few.

Going beyond mere walk-on, Chen Kun brings a frighteningly cool focus to Chiang's son, Chiang Ching-kuo. Equally effective are actor-helmer Jiang Wen as a quietly ruthless KMT officer, and, most entertainingly, helmer Feng as Shanghai's most famous gangster, Du Yuesheng.

The bulk of the pic was directed by Huang, whose fine list of credits portraying contempo China with an ironic eye stretches back to "The Black Cannon Incident" (1986). Both Feng and Chen Kaige (who also has an extended cameo as a nationalist officer) are among those who helped with helming chores.

Docu footage is sparingly used, except in the final rally in Tiananmen Square on Oct. 1, 1949, when Mao declared the PRC's founding. Use of large-scale military scenes from earlier pics -- here printed in black-and-white -- helped keep the pic's tab down to a relatively modest 30 million yuan ($4.4 million). Throughout, Zhao Xiaoshi's widescreen lensing is topnotch.

Han recently announced he's planning a similar extravaganza, "The Founding of a Party," set during 1917-21, for the 90th anni of the Communist Party in 2011.

uf, ovaj titl je praktično neupotrebljiv – besmisleno je gledati film sa ovako bednim, mehaničkim 'prevodom'...

Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, lost a co-worker to a tsunami on a deep-sea fishing trip four years ago. He leads a simple life running a small seafood restaurant and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. Man-sik's brother Hyung-sik works as a coast guard. One day, he rescues a female college student from Seoul who promptly, comes on to him aggressively. While these everyday domestic affairs unfold, geologist Kim Hwi, an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea is showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 tsunami. Nesumnjiva i neosporiva činjenica je da Bong trenutno spada u top 5 najkvalitetnijih autora koji već godina moćno reprezentuju korejsku kinematografiju. Imajući to u vidu, bez pardona i lažnog uvijanja potražujem savršenstvo ili barem napredak u odnosu na prethodne naslove iz njegovog opusa. I tu imam problem.

Madeo, stilski i dramski najviše nalikuje naravno njegovom najuspešnijem filmu Memories of Murder. Međutim, tu negde i prestaju značajnije sličnosti, jer Mother ne doseže ni u jednom svom minutu eleganciju, gracioznost i monumentalnost slavnijeg prethodnika. Možda dele u pojedinim trenucima ludost, apstraknost, grotesku prikazivanja familijarnih i društvenih odnosa, ali jednostavno Mother ostaje kratkih rukava u poređenju sa egzotičnim duhovima misterije prošlosti koji bogato opskrbljuju Bongovo najuspelije delo.

Jednostavno krivulja dinamičnog i zdravog inetenziteta ima preterano vijugavo kretanje; od duhovitih i smelih konotacija, do patetičnih, izvitoperenih scena preglumljavanja, pretvaranja, pozorišno-teatralnog valjanja u blatu. Možda se neko i nevoljno nasmeje retardiranosti junaka, ali se nikako ne može smejati naivnosti Bongovog finala, koje, na neki bizaran način nosi u sebi i najjači emotivni naboj.

Svakako pad u odnosu na prethodne filmove, što nikako ne znači da Bong neće iznenaditi narednim, jer i najveći autori u svojim opusima imaju uspone i padove, a sa Majkom se on samo malo zagrcnuo.

Gulaal is set in Rajpur a fictional city of Rajasthan, where a member of the erstwhile royal family stakes claim to the land of Rajasthan and wants to go back to the days of royalty. He wants Rajputana back from the Government of India and challenges the very idea of democracy. His history backs him, his people too, but the power corrupts him.

Pa dobro, A Wednesday je poprilichno iskochio. A i nije da je jedini. Ima kod njih raznih filmova, manje-vishe svi bez muzike nisu pravljeni po komichnim arshinima.

A nisi me valjda shvatio previše ozbiljno.

Jasno, tolika produkcija izbaci godišnje sigurno više od jednog kvalitetnog naslova (pogotovo nezavisna). Ali im je distribucija uglvanom loša.

Rustic life is brutally shattered by oppressors and liberators alike in the simple and confrontational Korean war drama "A Little Pond." Lee Saang-woo's feature bow is direct, uncomplicated and incredibly moving in its depiction of the events leading up to the real-life Nogunri massacre; in particular, the pic will touch the raw nerves of South Korean auds still impacted by the not completely resolved civil war of the 1950s. Outside the Korean peninsula, this by turns splendid and harrowing film reps a perfect festival item, matching pacifist themes with fine ensemble perfs and picturesque lensing.

The yarn is set in July 1950, just one month into the Korean War, in the small village of Bawulgol, whose inhabitants have little knowledge of the international politics escalating the battle on the Korean peninsula. Townsfolk talk vaguely of their plans if the war spills into their lives. Some are embittered that South Korean President Rhee Syng-man has already hightailed it down to the port city of Busan, leaving the rest of the population endangered by advancing North Korean forces. But mainly, Bawulgol's citizens just live their lives: farming, bickering and bitching about the summer heat while the local schoolchildren prepare for a singing competish in Seoul.

The idyll ends when advancing American troops order everyone to evacuate what will soon be a war zone. The villagers obey, but lack of a coordinated plan and U.S. military indifference mean the townsfolk are thrust from the frying pan into the fire.

Much of the pic's second half is concerned with the villagers' trauma as other U.S. Army units mistake the rural Koreans for enemy combatants. The film enters a phase that is as grueling as the opening section of "Saving Private Ryan"; the dramatic impact is even more devastating as the easygoing first half has established an intimate audience connection with the besieged townfolk.

The script is based on books about and interviews with survivors of the Nogunri incident -- a wartime massacre of more than 200 Koreans that, per press materials, was denied by the American and South Korean governments until 2005. Exact details of the massacre are still in dispute. Pic presents the incident in realistic fashion, but twice (once at the halfway mark and again at the finale), helmer Lee makes audacious use of CGI, briefly transporting the film from faithful re-creation into the realm of the fantastic. The bold embellishments will awe some (and are sure to rankle others) but are consistent with the poetic tone established in the pic's first half.

The large ensemble cast prevents any one character becoming a chief protagonist. Collectively, the thesps ease auds into the rhythms of village life, heightening sensitivity to the shocking reality of wartime slaughter. Pic is dedicated to thesp Park Gwang-jung ("Driving With My Wife's Lover"), who died during post-production.

Known for his theatrical work, Lee makes an accomplished and vivid transition to the cinema, approaching his potentially loaded story with compassionate detachment and refusing to coast on easy emotion or sentimental manipulation.

Title refers to a well-known 1972 antiwar song by Korean pop composer Kim Min-ki; in a deliberate anachronism, a children's choir sings his songs. The titular tune refers to a battle to the death between two fish in a little pond -- a metaphor readily understood by Korean auds that also goes some way toward explaining the pic's CGI gambit.

Radical politics offer no place to hide from guilt and shame in the superior Korean mystery meller "Paju." Park Chan-ok's long-awaited follow-up to her celebrated 2002 debut, "Jealousy Is My Middle Name," reveals the helmer has retained her powerful ability to depict the burning passions that can make relationships searingly painful. Complex narrative will make this emotionally intense pic a tough sell at Korean arthouse venues, and fest auds also will need patience to fully absorb Park's dense storyline, but perseverance will be rewarded.

Twentysomething Eun-mo (Seo Woo, "Crush and Blush") listens to a taxi driver drone on as she rides down a foggy highway. The story then cycles back eight years earlier, when a lustful Joong-shik (Lee Sun-kyun) accidentally causes a woman to neglect her baby with disastrous consequences. Ashamed, Joong-shik goes on the lam and holes up in the titular city of Paju near the North Korean border. Teaching religious classes to the town's schoolgirls, Joong-shik captures the heart of local house owner Eun-soo (Shim Yi-young), despite the protestations of her pubescent younger sister and Joong-shik's student Eun-mo.

Back in the present day, Joong-shik is now the ringleader of a political protest group whose interests run from obstructing the city's plans of gentrification to strengthening relations with North Koreans. Squatting in Paju's derelict apartments, the group is under siege from an unidentified property developer who has engaged goons to bulldoze the buildings. With only the briefest of hints as to what has transpired, Eun-soo is nowhere to be seen and Joong-shik and Eun-mo are clearly at odds. Narrative flashes back twice more to sparingly fill in the gaps on their shifting lives.

An unusual structure and deliberately opaque transitions require auds to work hard, but each installment smartly sets up sufficient story hooks to keep the viewer engaged. Though it works primarily as a meller, the story also has some action and mystery elements that make it function like a Bergmanesque thriller. A final extended flashback successfully draws myriad threads together to reveal truths avoided by the participants and deftly alluded to by the filmmaker.

Helmer-scripter Park has a strong grip on her material and rolls it out with confidence in the audience's ability to handle narrative complexity. With equal confidence, Park has clearly given precise instructions to her thesps, but leaves them plenty of room to breathe.

Perfs are riveting and pitch-perfect. Woo convinces in each stage of Eun-mo's life, from immature, jealous schoolgirl to rebel whose cause is to unravel the circumstances around her sister's fate. Lee's changes are less pronounced, but the thesp is also versatile in his portrayal of Joong-shik. Supporting cast is flawless.

Grainy blue-gray lensing by Kim Woo-hyung ("A Good Lawyer's Wife," "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl") adds a docu feel and acts as a metaphor for the murky secrets at the yarn's heart. Other tech credits are pro.

Despite powerful content, the uninformative title -- though instantly evocative for Korean auds -- may compound the pic's commercial obstacles abroad.
